dontknowitall
Hi, I have bought this 6 volt wiper unit and am looking for the switch that will fit this. I have seen Merle's switch in the centre of the dash, my Fargo has not got this. I also dont know if this is a one or 2 speed. Does anyone here knows were to get one? dontknowitall
Is this the knob that would fit this unit?
Merle Coggins
That knob looks like what cars used. The truck knob should be chromed. I was looking at your picture album and the pic of the dash of your truck I don't see any holes up in the middle. There should be 3. Two are for the mounting screws that mount the wiper motor. (your motor seems to be missing the mounting brackets too) The third one is for the switch, whether it's a vacuum wiper or electric the switch location is the same. However, I suppose that with electric wipers you could mount a switch anywhere that you can run wires to it. Merle
dontknowitall
Thanks Merle, the switch is like plastice i think, but have so far been unable to secure a chrome one. The Fargo did not have this on it, it only has one wiper so I wanted to have it. I have the motor, the arms and now I need the switch and the bracket. Have you got a picture of the bracket? Merle Coggins
Unfortunately I don't have any pictures of my electric wiper motor and it's bracket. Was it normal for Aussie trucks to only have one wiper back then?
Dodgeb4ya
That wiper motor appears to be a 1949-52 DeSoto Chrysler motor and proper for 1951-3 Dodge trucks originally equipped with electric wipers. The bracket is missing though. You could probably use a switch off a DeSoto or Chrysler but it wouldn't look like the dodge truck switch. Town Panel could probably help you. goatram-
I sent Eric aka Townwagon one with the chrome switch cover like the orange one posted earlier. Here is a of his two switches
dontknowitall
Dont know, I ask Tony west he may know. Mind you my truck is a Canadian import not a Australian assembled one. MBF
How about using one of the old add on heater switches, that would give you on, off, and variable speed as you turn the know with the built in reohstat. Mike
dontknowitall
I like to use the original when possible.. thanks How about using one of the old add on heater switches, that would give you on, off, and variable speed as you turn the know with the built in reohstat. John Mathias
I haven't thought it much, but my cab is disassembled right now. If you want, I could try to take some pics of the wiper motor and mounting hardware tonight.
John Mathias
BTW: single speed wiper mtrs have 3 wires, 2 speed has 4 wires. Looking at your pics, it's a single speed unit
John Mathias
here are the pics. as you can see, it's a single speed unit. hope this helps.

jmooner3
Hey guys, I pulled a rusted mess of wiper motor and pivots out of my 49 today. I've searched and found a bunch of good info here with respect to getting it cleaned up and functional. One question, I grabbed the attached discussion because it has a picture of two switches. I have the switch, with no knob or retaining nut.. It was hanging under the dash. Looks like there are 3 wires plus one that bullets into that big tab (at about 4 o'clock in the attached pic of the two switches). Is that a fuse or contact of some sort? Obviusly the switch goes up though the hole but what is that tab for? Does the linkage ride in there? Not sure if I'll need other parts yet but I will need knob and retaining nut and one mounting screw for the exterior bezel. Trade or cash to Vermont 05452. Dodgeb4ya
That tab is the circuit breaker. Six volt Power feeds to it. Another note-motors with 3 wires coming out of the motor -Black, Red and green are two speed motors. The fourth wire to the switch is the 6 volt feed wire. Wiper motors with only two wires-black and green are single speed motors. The third wire to the switch is the 6V feeder wire. Desotodav
Ryan: how did you go with that wiper switch? I see that the thread is from quite some time ago. I have found that my Oz truck/s have had the under-dash toggle (single-speed) wiper switch to operate the single electric wiper motor. Although, I do think that the above-dash style wiper knob does looks much fancier! Desotodav
jmooner3
OK I have the wiper motor and linkage dissassembled, reassembled, freshe grease, new wires soldered into to motor but my question is the switch. It is a 3 wire (two speed) Black, Green, Red and the 6v pwr. I switched out the red for white because that's what I had, but I think I have it all wired as it was. Question 1 - what sould the switch do. I assumed it would be off (all the way counterclockwise) and low (in middle position), and "high" (all the way to right). Problem is there is no off. Far right is high, middle is slow, and left is slow (no change)... It just rotates and rotates... Question 2 - how does the breaker work? is this part of the "off" sequence or was it for overcuent. Thre is a bullet connector for the pwr and a small hole on another tab is there supposed to be sounething mounted there? Thanks
Dave72dt
Maybe the "park" mode if it has one isn't working or your switch needs some work.

jmooner3
The "park" action looks to come from the cam on the one side of the gear - cam is in place as is the pin. The contacts physically open - need to open it up again to see if contact electrically opens when traveling. Does anyone know if there are connections close together that I may have bridged with solder when I replaced the wires? Any info welcome!
