Numbers show it is a 49 1st series P15. State of NC arbitrarily titled it as a 46 because a 49 P15is not in their data base. People on the street say it can't be a 49 because it's the wrong body style. I know it's a 1st Series 49 but get tired of trying to explain it. Should I just call it a 46 to make it easier or am I just being to darn touchy ?

Go for 1948. That is what the Engineering Dept. called it. Both the American and Canadian editions of "The Serial Number Guide" do not show 1949 model year P15, D24, etc. The 1949 model year for P15, D24, etc. was the invention of the U.S. marketing people as they were in production when the rest of the industry was building 1949 models and Chrysler's true 1949 models were months from production.

My '69 dart is titled as a '68. I am told it was common in Pennsylvania for cars to be titled as the year in which they were first titled. Therefore early production units were sometimes titled as last years and left over models were sometimes titled as a later year. No facts to prove it, just what I was told. Makes sense to me though.

old rat 49, explaining it is cool, it means people are interested. The ones that want to argue about it can be a pain though.

This one is also an early 1949 model.

I believe it was the first 3 months of '49., before they

changed the body style tooling and were ready to go.

The title here in MO simply called it a '49 Plymouth, no model number

used. It also was using the number on the door post as a VIN, instead

of the engine number.

I got the title that way, said nothing, and just let the license bureau

issue a new title into my name using same info. No problema.

The first series 1949 model year began December 1, 1948, in the U.S. and continued until the end of production, which for Plymouth was the first week of February, 1949.

The new 1949 models were not built along side the 1946-48 models, as commonly believed. Assembly plants were shut down for a couple of weeks in February for the change over, except Windsor which was shut down for January and February in 1949.

That's how rapidly sales of the 1948 models dropped in Canada toward the end of the 1948 calendar year. Chrysler of Canada ended production around Christmas, 1948, and never marketed the P-15, et al as 1949 models.

Part of the problem undoubtedly arises from SHIPMENT figures, ie., the number of cars shipped from the factory reported monthly. The 1st series models were slow sellers once the competition announced their new models and thus many of the last 1st series models produced were shipped in the same time period as the first 2nd series models.

Production, shipments, sales and registrations - all mean different things and cannot be interchanged. Their figures never match for any specified time period.

Buick faced the same problem with their 1949 40 Special models. The 1949 50 Super and 70 Roadmaster used new bodies shared with Cadillac and Olds 98 while the 40 Special used the 1946-48 body. Sales sank and production ended by January.

I think I'll just call it a 48 unless I'm talking to P14/D24 people and a 46 if I ever sell it. It was built in Dec of 48 and I was built in June of the same year so that works for me.

Tell them it is 1949 p-15 and that the new body style didn't come out until later in 49, and if they don't believe you they don't know Sierra Hotel Idiot Tango about mopars:)

Seems like if you use Sierra, Hotel and Tango then India would be more consistent than Idiot. Unless you want to go WW2 style to be closer to the vintage of the car. In that case I think it would be Sugar How Item Tare.

Of course I'm being a bit of an Adam Henry bringing that up. :)
