aero3113 Posted September 23, 2010 Report Posted September 23, 2010 After thinking about just replacing my manifolds this winter I decided to pull the engine and clean it up, maybe get it hot tanked while it is out. To pull the transmission do I just remove the drive shaft,un-hook the linkages, remove the bolts and pull off? Does the bell housing and clutch just unbolt off also with no special tools needed once the engine is out? Quote
Don Coatney Posted September 23, 2010 Report Posted September 23, 2010 Yes to all your questions. Do take lots of pictures before you start and more pictures as the disassembly continues. Then you have something to assist you during re-assembly. Quote

greg g Posted September 23, 2010 Report Posted September 23, 2010 You need to pay atention to the cables, ad linkages. Most have found it easier to pull the engie seperate from the trans. to pull the engins and trans as an assembly nearly requires the removal of the front sheetmetal. You must have a lifting device with a leveler to get them out either way. Quote

Young Ed Posted September 23, 2010 Report Posted September 23, 2010 Depending on what sorta hottank you go for you'll be replacing cam bearings. If the engine is a good runner I'd pull it and just clean it out with a pressure washer. Then paint it up and stick it back in. Quote
greg g Posted September 23, 2010 Report Posted September 23, 2010 that will work but you will still need the leveler. The angle involved if pretty steep. Don;t get the leveler from Harbor Freight, they are not strog enough for the weight of the flat 6. Quote
Young Ed Posted September 23, 2010 Report Posted September 23, 2010 Greg I've done a few of these without the leveler. Probably makes it easier but I wouldnt say its required. Quote
greg g Posted September 23, 2010 Report Posted September 23, 2010 your experienc probably gives you a good idea of the angle required, without having that fore knowledge of where to put the chain on the hook, a leveler would certainly be a worthwhile thing to have. Quote
Alshere59 Posted September 26, 2010 Report Posted September 26, 2010 Since I will be swapping in a rebuilt engine in the very near future any tips from those that have done it already? I woud think the bell housing coud stay on but pull th tranny? How tight is that with radiator removed? Also where are you attaching the chains to? Pics for us new guys? Quote
Don Coatney Posted September 26, 2010 Report Posted September 26, 2010 Dennis Hemmingway installed his engine without removing the hood. Hopefully he will chime in with details on how he did it. Quote
