Hey guys, new to the forum here. Now this might be blasphemous to some of you, but I am considering putting a 1980 slant 6 motor in my 1946 D24. I couldn't find any posts about this here. Has anyone done this? Things to look out for? Suggestions?

Basically the flathead has some sort of electrical problem that I can not run down, and I'd love to have a bit more power. The fluid drive transmissions was always a little sluggish feeling. What do you all think?

Thanks.

If it were mine I'd track down the elec. problem and then hop up the original engine some for a little more power.

I am constantly amazed at the power that the ol 218 has. I have concluded that the only thing I am going to do is to change the gear ratio for economy. My 48 has more than enough power for use today. The manufacturers are trying to sell you a new car by giving you 300 or more horsepower. Well, so what if they get up to 60mph a few seconds before me, i still catch up and cruise with them. 218 has 95hp, why would I need additional 200+hp to get me to the same place. I vote to track down the elecrical problem, and keep origional motor.:D

hi ya and welcome. good to have you here. luv the flat 6 and fluid drive in my 49. if the car is original, i'd keep it the way it is and fix what you got. just my opinion, but do whatever makes you happy. :)

/6 is nearly 7 inches longer than the flathead. If you are talented and determined then go for it. But also check the servicability of the distributor as it will be o the low side of the engine on the pass side of the engine bay. You will eed to make changes to the front and middle crossmenbers, the firewall and the position of the radiator.

You might want to check the /6 .org website and see what those folks heve put slanters in. No doubt they are good engines and can make a lot of power but like TIM mentioned the rear drive mopar V 6 would probably make foe a less complicated install.

Welcome aboard. Electrical problems on the stock system are pretty simple to track down and repair.

What is going to happen to the electrical problems with the /6 install? you will still have them unless you rewire the car. my 47 P15 had a /6 in it when i got it and it was tight, they cut the inner fender panel to clear the alt, radiator was moved in front of the core support, the firewall was pushed back for clearance. all around it was not a good idea whoever did it. like tim said v6 or v8 is a better idea if you must get rid of the flat 6.
