Still trying to establish where the leak is coming from. In doing so I discovered that when the level of water in the radiator is down below the top hose that goes to the thermostat housing, the leak slows down. I fill the radiator up and the leak becomes quite rapid. Does this mean that the water pump is bad ?

I might add that it drips from the bottom of the timingchain cover but seems to be running down from higher-up. Also the leak increases greatly when the motor is running. I checked all hose connects and found no leaks.

I found no leaks in the radiator.

I greatly appreciate your help.

Have you visually checked the weephole on the pump? If hard to see, use a kleenex or soft tissue..this stuff is water magnets..if leaking it will wick it out fast, if it continues to leek there it will be evident of your continous wicking with tissue..

I did find that there was water at the bottom of the water pump. I think I will replace the pump and if that don't fix it I will have to pull the timing chain cover and replace the gasket. Does any one know where I can get a gasket for the water pump and timeing chain cover ???

Thank all of you that have responed.

There are no water passages behind the timing cover other than a core plug. A gasket should come with the pump.

Sorry guys, I for got to ask where I can get a water pump for a 1940 ply P-10 flat head engine ???

Would Napa have something that old ???

I put a napa pump on my 48 earlier this summer. At the time it was the only one in the country. Hopefully they have resupplied since then.

I wonder if it would do any good to ask at a Farm and Fleet or TSC. I have found some pleasant surprises at them.

I am not sure we have those stores in my area. I am located in Portland, Or.

Niel that was sure a long 5 minutes!
