41/53dodges
ok, i finally got the 41' dug out of the woods last monday, so now its time to think about an engine. the old one is a P-18 motor, its supposed to have a 25" block. that engine is fried as far as im concerned, it sat full of water the last 40+ years and when i pulled the oil drain i got water. its a mess. later, i found a massey harris super 26 combine at the neighbor's farm and earned that by fixing a few tractors for him. the question is, how the h*ll do i get the stupid thing out of the combine without cutting it all apart? its the old type where its at the bottom behind the wheel, and theres no room to work under there. ALSO: does anybody have a decent or rebuildable engine to part with for at most around $100 either?
pflaming
I know that machine!! Operating that machine was the hottest, dirtiest job I ever had. The engine was below and the chaff from the header was in front, won't ever forget. I would LOVE to see some photos of that machine! If I recall, you pull the radiator and then the engine follows through that space. You certainly do NOT have to use any torch. Good luck on your project. 41/53dodges
i would get some photos, but it was raining the better part of the week. i will work on getting some in a few weeks if the guy doesnt haul it off for scrap. then again, he never gets rid of anything, so i think its safe. the machine is kinda in a crappy place, so its a little hard to work on. (cow pasture). not sure how the motor follows the radiator, the radiator is mounted up on the side of the machine and belt driven off the engine to the fan. greg g
Send a PM or email to member christopher. While he has not been active lately, he has been harvesting combine engines out in Washington's grain belt for a good while. I would think he would be able to give you some pertainanet information. Didn't some of them have the engine mounted on a slide out tray kind of assembly??? http://www430.pair.com/p15d24/mopar_forum/member.php?u=
Dave72dt
Check around the tail end of the engine. Probably drives a large belt. Look for the tightener. That should show you where the engine cradle fastens to the main frame. Unbolt that and slide it out. A couple planks, your trailer and a cable winch and it's yours. Farmer most likely has a skid loader that would also get it out for you.
41/53dodges
the engine drives everything individually, right off the output shaft
41/53dodges
while attempting to shoehorn the engine out, i pulled the manifolds, and to my dismay i found large quantities of water and rust fell from them. i then pulled out a spark plug and found my worst fear, water and rust. it seems the engine will be going with the combine out to the scrap. UNLESS ANYBODY ELSE WISHES TO GO AND RETRIEVE IT, IT MAY BE A DECENT REBUILDER YET, JUST BEYOND MY CAPABILITIES. IF ANYBODY IS INTERESTED, PLEASE RESPOND TO THIS POST. THE OWNER WOULD LIKE $150 FOR IT.
JoelOkie
Tough break for you. If no one buys it, it would still be good to get all the parts you can off it, if it's going to the scrappers any way. Hope you find you a good engine there close to you.
