Jim, is yours leaking? I believe mine is and I'm looking for a new one.

Yes. Actually I have two. One has a slow leak, the other holds no vacuum at all.

i was planning to order a new one at andy b.'s.

i think they want 70$ for it, plus 30$ core charge.

Yes, I saw that. I'll use Andy as a last resort. I was hoping to find another source. I'll try Terrill Machine first. Thanks Shell!

I went against my boycott of Andy B. and ordered a vacuum advance from him. Quicker turn around time and a bit cheaper. I hope I don't regret it. It's always an adventure when you call that place.
..

Good luck. I have received great stuff from him and I've received totally wrong stuff from him. I don't boycott him but I do hold my breath every time I do order something from him.

Let me know how it goes.

I bought one on ebay, but haven't used it yet.....just got for a spare.

I don't know much about the differences between the various advance

units. I bought one listed as for a 1957 Plymouth, since my engine is a

57 model. Would one listed for say a 47 model also work on the 57??

Why or why not?

Bob it totally depends on whether you are using the 47 or 57 distributor. The vacuum advance along with the dist changed for 51 and possibly again by the time your 57 engine was made.

Jim Terrerll at Terrell Machine in DeLeon, Texas can rebuild the original units, he has done three for me in the last three years. I have three engines, two 218 and one 230 and three extra distributors. Almost all of mine would not pull vacuum, bad diaphragm in all cases. You can find him in the links pages here on the forum.

i guess a bad advance will result in excessive fuel consumption and loss of power,

as the timing will be off point at different rpm levels and cause a bad efficiency?

is that right? i was told so, anyway...

That is my understanding too.

I don't know, Tom. I'm just hoping it solves my knocking problem.

Joel, somehow I missed that Roberts carried the vacuum advances. If I'd known I would have bought it from him. I think I checked their inventory online and didn't see it there.

I am not sure if it is even listed online, Joe. I just happened to have been looking through his catalog here on the desk when I saw the question come up. I hope you get your knock problem isolated so you can get it fixed ...aggravating, no doubt.

I think it was less than 75 dollars, I ordered all of my engine parts from him, and the bill included the advance which I think was $75.00 but not sure. I also had shipping to him, used the smallest flat rate box that USPS has. Call him and ask, he is easy to talk to unlike some vendors I have read about.
