I have been looking high and low for possible donor mirrors..the sad news is that the stands have to be quite high due to the pronounced step that is where the beltline trim goes. Here is my adaptation of a donor MOPAR mirror base as I did not want the rectangular mirrors. The round mirrirs are from a set of long peeps that I had found at a swap meet long ago..had to cut the stems, cut a step onto the shaft approx .100 metal removed..file in some wrench flats and thread the shafts 5/16 x 18..the round head mirrors are offset mounted for a bit more height and this makes for a perfect view of the mirrors heads..

Charlie..these puppies look better than the Lucas style we discussed earlier..they fit the door curve and at the same time are the only ones Ihave found that truly stand high enough to mount where they need to on the door..rear of base will mount on vertical line at the vent corner for no vent interference...they are super nice bases and easily adaptable due to the threaded head...sent you a private e-mail on these units including the factory part and cast numbers..

Tim and Bill I just saw some truck mirrors at a swap meet that look very much like what you made/need. They were $15 each. I think they were repros for 47-53 chevy trucks. Roberts also has some for dodge trucks too.

I've looked at the repops of the Chevy mirrors that are "listed compatable" with the old Plymouths..trust me they are not, save your money..the Ford mirrors are also less than adequate in height..I have had my hands on many a set of mirrors and each literally comes up short as far as the 49-52 Plymouths are concerned..other than height you have the problem of rectangular heads hitting against the side glass if they fit the curve of the door..as for the Dodge trucks..ear;liest model Ihave is a 58 and cannot comment of fit and function for the earlier models

ohoh Dad has a set of those chevy ones for his 51. As for the truck mirrors I mentioned before thats only a mirror head.

I have a set of the Chevy (recommend car mirrors as advertized as direct fit on e-bay for our old Plymouths) mirrors here also..personally I count them as wasted money...while the one for the driver can made made to work to some degree..the passenger side is not worth mounting..

the mirror head if of the proper thread would be of interest for sure..

Ed, I went out and looked at the truck mirrors you mentioned..the stems on these are long enough for sure but without one in my hand I could not readily comment on the fit..also the heads alone are 10.00 and the stems are 14-19 depending on finish did not see a list for an assembly as it appears you mix and match what you want..looks like a pair would run you about 60.00 repop not counting shipping..now if you luck up on a set a swap meet..you may come out real nice there also..the head of the mirror is 5 inch..bit large for a passenger car...are these the mirrors your dad has and NOT Chevy car style?

I believe he's got the car style. I mentioned the truck style for next time you need a mirror head for a project. Interesting I'm pretty sure it was LMC I saw at the swap meet and the chrome mirrors were 15 there and only 10 on the website.

thanks for the reply Ed..on the car mirrors I guess being a bit on the short side may be a limiting factor for me..I need the mirrors in full view and found the Chevies a bit lower than the window opening and if you think I am short...the wife is 5 foot even...this car needs be where she can drive it also..

I posted this a while ago, and it is more suitable for the older cars, but since we're discussing customized mirrors ...

I got 60's era VW Bug mirrors (still available new) that mount on top of a special threaded hinge pin. Then I cut the top off the VW hinge pin and welded it on my Mopar hinge pin and ended up with nice mirrors where I'd been unable to mount anything before without drilling holes.

They make a round mirror, but I went with the pear shaped one.

On the same day, same junkyard, I got the above mirrors I snagged a bug mirror (same size head and shape) with a broken glass for free, it has the 90 degree screw based mount that does the job the "substitute ear" that your hinge is doing in your picture and almost looks like your upper antennea mount. Appears these could very much be a workable solution also. I didn't want to drill the large hole this mount requires especially as I had but a left mirror and wanted a matching pair..I am not sure if they are available in a set..would think so and if they are, what the cost may be..some of the bug trim repop is getting quite expensive also. There are a number of sources yet that I have to explore for possible upgrades but getting your hands on them for experimenting without cost an arm and a leg is the killer...I got the mirrors above for 20.00 plus 8.00 for the set of peeps I bought at the swap meet..add a little labor and these are very workable units that do look aright at home on the car. There are many workable solutions I am sure one has but to get out and beat the bushes and do a bit of experimenting.

A mirror is something I just don't have any luck finding in the junkyards. Not a stock P-15 mirror anyway. A friend gave me a small motorcycle mirror that is sized about right but it's billet aluminum and it just wouldn't go with the look I want for my car. I saw some in the JP Cycles Vintage catalog that are cheap and look like they'd work pretty good from the pic, just wish I could see 'em in person. If you want to check em out at www.jpcycles.com you can or you might try other motorcycle catalogs. I think I'll keep looking at the swap meets and try to catch the guy that actually brought his stuff to sell.:)

Here is a custom mount of the normally door edge mounted mirrors

They don't move or rattle.
