adam_knox Posted May 3, 2010 Report Posted May 3, 2010 Okay, the soon-to-be Mrs. took a nap, so I snuck out to the garage to "quick" put in a new exhaust manifold. Taking it off actually did go pretty smoothly, but I discovered oil residue on the ledge above the oil pan. Oil can't leak out of the exhaust manifold, so odds are its the valve spring cover gasket right? (the two rectangles with the wing nuts) Top of the engine is clean (minus residue smoke from the fire. Just wondering if I can quick solve the oil leak while the manifold is off. Although I'm wise enough to know when I do something its as far from quick as you can get! Oh well, hoping to have it back on the road for the wedding. Thanks gang! Quote
greg g Posted May 3, 2010 Report Posted May 3, 2010 cut youself some new gaskets. And do not over tighten the wing nuts, as this distorts the covers and makes them hard to seal. Put a little greas on one surface of the gasket. When you reassemble just snug them up, then tighten till you can see the grease start to squeeze out, then give them another half to 3/4 turn. Quote

I have heard many horror stories with removing them and was afraid something would break and I would not get it ready in time for the wedding. I still never got around to changing it yet(wedding was last July). Maybe this winter:D .Glad you got it off with no problems. Quote
aero3113 Posted May 3, 2010 Report Posted May 3, 2010 Here is a pic of the 50 in front of the church we got married in. Adam don't forget to post some pics of the wedding. Crongrats!!(in advance) Quote

I still never got around to changing it yet(wedding was last July). Maybe this winter .Glad you got it off with no problems. Yeah, this was my second time doing it. The first try I made my own gaskets...Let's just say arts and crafts aren't my specialty apparently! Not too bad, hurts my back more than anything. But when you do it, definitely feels like you should earn a badge or something after getting it all done! Hey Greg, should that be regular all-purpose grease (the same stuff to lubricate all the undercarriage stuff)? Or should I be using the same kinda sealer stuff that you use on the manifold gasket? Thanks for the tip about over tightening. Seems like I'm too much of a weakling when it comes to tightening generator brackets and stuff so I tend to over compensate on those "finger tight" nuts! adam_knox Posted May 3, 2010 Author Report Posted May 3, 2010 Nice pic! Wow, you had it nice and purdy for the big day! Thanks for the congrats, I'll be sure to post some pics...hopefully we'll be in the Chrysler and not the Ford Taurus! Quote
greg g Posted May 3, 2010 Report Posted May 3, 2010 (edited) GP grease or Wheel bearing stuff, it just a squeeze quotient indicator. You can put some gasket sealer on the other side. There really isn't any pressure in there except for crankcase pressure. While they are off, dig around in the bottom of the the castings at the bottom of the springs with a coathanger wire. There should be two drain holes in each pocket. If they get plugged with sludge the oil level will get higher than it should and seek the nearest easy exit. Edited May 3, 2010 by greg g Quote
aero3113 Posted May 3, 2010 Report Posted May 3, 2010 Here is a quick video on how me and my grooms men got to the church. Lol, its there's one thing you can count on in this forum is for any thread to hijacked! I'm honored to have this thread taken over by your wedding pics and vids...which thanks to the video, I now remember I need to fix the horn before the wedding! Quote
Young Ed Posted May 3, 2010 Report Posted May 3, 2010 Twelve days from now I should have some similar pictures of my wedding. Adam whens your big day? We'll be heading your way in the 48 for the honeymoon too. Quote
moose Posted May 3, 2010 Report Posted May 3, 2010 I can't find any videos of us driving away, but I got a few pictures. The morning of the wedding I had to fix the defroster wiring--at the hotel 100 miles from my house! I needed the defrost that night. January in Massachusetts. It was sunny that day though, and about 25 degrees for a high. Quote

It was sunny that day though, and about 25 degrees for a high. lol, gotta love those on the road repairs. Sounds like you had good weather for a January wedding! Ed, big day is on May 29th, then packing up the U-haul to move on the 1st. Alas, no honeymoon for us. Between lack of time and life's fun quirks (like someone driving down our street and smashing rear passenger windows for the fun of it ) looks like our honeymoon will be spent unpacking in GA. Are you two love birds doing the Dells? If your stomach is up to it there's a wooden coaster park/go kart place that has one wicked ride (the coaster dips below ground on the drop and travels underneath the parking lot). If you have health insurance, or at least some ibuprofen I do recommend spending three hours there! You're gonna post the pics right? Quote
Young Ed Posted May 3, 2010 Report Posted May 3, 2010 Yes there will be lots of pictures. We are doing 4 days in the dells and then 3-4 in door county. If all goes according to plan the 48 will be at the automotion car show in the dells. Neither of us are much for coasters so we might have to pass on that one. I prefer to keep my lunch internal. Merle Coggins Posted May 3, 2010 Report Posted May 3, 2010 I think the majority of the Wis Dells attractions don't really get going until after Memorial Day, but there should still be plenty to do there. Ed, I just got my Automotion registration comfirmation back. As it gets closer we'll have to formulate a plan so that we can get parked close together. Adam, if you need an extra hand gettin' the Ol' Girl ready for the big day, just say the word. I'd be glad to help out if I can. Merle Quote
adam_knox Posted May 4, 2010 Author Report Posted May 4, 2010 (edited) Thanks Merle:) I should be okay, the list of to-do's isn't crazy long. (although heaven knows once I get my hands in there new projects will turn up!) But if you have the itching to come over for a cook out and a good laugh I can give ya' jingle and we can turn some bolts! I gotta tell you, it was so much fun working with you and Ken on the Jeep! Wish I had more weekends before I leave. Seems like time is the only thing we have more of but never enough of... BTW, how did Heather do on her cycle lessons? Were you a tough teacher?
