Coolant level

How high should the coolant level in these old radiators be? Are they like the modern ones, where you fill the radiator up to just below the lip of the opening?

I fill mine up and let it burp out some. If finds its own level. You could probably not fill it quite full and let it burb out a little less

I do the same as Ed. If I fill it full, it will push the extra out the overflow tube and find it's own level.

That's what I figured. But since I will be in a very excitable state of mind, I don't need any spilling fluids to push me over the deep end.

Just kidding. Overflow I can deal with.

I don't know where I got the idea I could get out of this thing without a great big mess. Yesterday I had to throw my clothes out on the back porch because they stunk of gasoline. The day before, I had antifreeze everywhere. I guess it's a real sign I'm making progress because I'm actually working with the car's vital fluids. And yet I'm out in the garage talking to myself: "This is a damn mess!" I kept having to look over my shoulder and make sure Rodney wasn't sneaking up on me and catching me at it.

I have been aflicted with ostiopornosis for some time now and I dont know of any cure. I hope Rodney does not come down with a hard case of ostiopornosis too.:D

about 1/2 to 1 inch over the cooling passages seems to be plenty.

My coolant stays about two to three inches below top of the tank.
