GTK - A Question - Members List by Location - Is there an easy way to get?

GTK, is there an easy way to get a listing of forum members arrayed by their geographical location? Maybe its already built in and I haven't located it.....??

Yes Greg is maintaining the list of members that have said they could help should you be on the road and experience trouble. That list is generally guarded and upon request from a traveler..members along their intended route will be sent of line back to the requester.

We also had a map where each person registered himself on the map and idnetified with a push pin..I have this link on my computer at home but for the life of me cannot remember the name of the site. Does anyone have that map handy???

I was just wondering if the new system allows either GTK or us as individual members to sort the list by location rather than resorting to looking individually at every last members profile and create our own list....seems like that would be the easiest way to figure out who was close to you.

Ahah....I understand.

I went and looked at Frapper. We have about 4 Mopars listed from Colorado on their system but as you say....no map...my photo and location are still represented but just a dot somewhere in the Universe.

On my reference to this site....it would be great to have some regional groupings or some way to know everyone listed here on P15-D24 who live "nearby" for lack of a better descriptor. Alphabetical by state or listed by zipcode or ???. That way we could communicate with the regulars on the forum who we know are close and we could also invite and include some of the others on the forum who watch the activities but aren't so inclined to participate in the discussion. It can be done just pulling up each name and redoing the list into a new database but I was hoping there is an easier way.

Therein lies one of the biggest pushing points I have for people to fill out a profile when registering. There is not a need for a home address..large city would suffice say, Atlanta, Ga..or just say Middle Georgia..SW Georgia etc...any posting then would have in the upper right the person, general locale and join date plus number of listing.

To list your car(s) would be a plus for in our speed to post we sometimes assume everyone knows what car we have...while most of the mechanicals are the same between these cars..trim, interior and some electrical is very different..a quick look to a profile would allow a tailored answer without need to ask make and model. The entire forum benefits and yet you need not reveal personal data as to your location...

I understand your point....but I don't see any liabilities if forum members are willingly providing their locations on sign up here. It would be different if they don't want anyone to know where they are located at all...then don't put a location down. I certainly respect that. I'm not sure I understand it but I do respect it. I suspect (but don't know for sure) that the vast majority of forum members have given a location willingly. Just thought that it would be a good way to organize some local events that's all.

Suggest you start a thread with Colorado and vicinities within close proximity to send you PM with contact data and such for the purpose of car related events. Maintain you own list...I have said data here for most of the guys here in Georgia that are on this forum. The HAMB just had a state of Georgia recall roster going around last couple weeks for same said purpose..big bunch of HAMB members in the area.

That way if they want in and such..their choice..forum is not connected to your private assembly.

I don't think you'll ever see everyone post their location on their profile. Even if they did, it probably wouldn't help much when it comes to getting together. Example: Merle Coggins and I set up a meeting for everyone in our area SE Wisconsin for January 20th. We only had a grand total of 6 (counting him and I) attend. The sad part was that 3 of the others who did attend lived between 50 and 175 miles away. There were only 3 of us locally. I know for a fact there are more people living within a 30 mile radius of the meeting location we met at. I've seen at least 10 cars of our vintage at local cruise ins over the years. In addition, one of those just made a post here recently that did not attend or even check it out via email or private messages and he only lives about 11 miles from the meeting place we had. Some people just want to do their own thing, so you'll never get them reply to anything. That is, unless they need something, then you'll see a post here.

I don't have a very specific location but I do have twin cities listed. That gives a good general idea. I wouldn't expect people to start posting their address's on here.

Scheduling events and times to meet is a hard thing to do. You never know what may come up at any time that may prevent you from attending. Some of us are very flexible..other may not be that lucky. The event that I hosted was actually the brain child of Don Coatney..I volunteered to work on his car..he had the ideal of getting as many of us to gether as possible. Some could not make it..but of those that did..I think we all had fun..food was good also. I would again like to have a chance for more of our local members to join up for a tech session at my place. Say pick out a needed project for a day and join forces to complete it. I owe one of our members a welding demo..maybe that can be done..

Anyway..those who wish to attend can and will, the others..well the invite is there..

Ok....good idea on the local thread Tim. I will do that. I'm also building my own list of all members from the public portions of this forum and the locations they have posted. I'm please to see that quite a few have a lot of information about their vehicles and their interests. But, it's amazing how few of us even put down our state of residence let alone a city. I would have guessed the majority had at least listed a state of residence....not so. Ok....I'm done with this thread. Back to other things. Never mind GTK...I'll try a new plan per Tim's suggestion.

Any of you gents ever see a membership roster? They are mailed to members who join and pay (gulp!) dues, etc. and are laid out by state and also have most of the members' addresses. Might this be the sort of thing of which you speak?:) :) :)

We could do a Frapr Map with those on the forum who wish to share thrit geographical information. The Frapr map still works for me. And there are quite a few folks from here posted there. Starting another map with P15 D24 and Pilot House folks shouldn't be a big deal, then the map could be linked to the forum if wanted. Perhaps the color of dot ar a note imbedded in the profile could then be added for the folks who are already on the help list, no personal info, that would still be close held, but then when requesting, you could already know where the folks were.

Greg..maybe you have stayed current with your Frappr map...I know it has been quite a time since I looked at it..about a month ago I think..it worked then also..but could not get the map yeaterday...maybe there is something a bit different in the address line now..could you post the link when you are viewing the map?

Not sure which membership roster you refer to? I'm a POC member and haven't ever gotten one. I passed on the expensive book this last year from POC. Otherwise...not sure which list you refer to grey beard.

I'm already on Frapper and if it does still work correctly then that would certainly be a decent option. My listing is not associated with P15-D24 directly but I have a photo of one of my car posted with location. And, it does pull up several other Mopar lovers at the same time. I just couldn't get the map to work yesterday.

Just to add a couple thoughts here. I'm a member of www.ninja250.org which is a forum for the all-too-misunderstood cult classic by the same name. That board does a couple of neat things that I really like (besides their comprehensive FAQ, which I already think this board does so well):

1) they use a Google map that inputs locations based only on those specified in profiles. those who don't specify aren't on the map

2) they print up business cards. When I see another 250 around town (which is rare...unless I know the person) I take out a business card and put in on their bike.

It's so novel to advertise assistance and comradery without a desire for money or business, that typically these people come to the board and participate.

Anyway, just thought I'd share. If I ever saw someone driving a P15, D24 or something therein, I'd want to meet them and chat it up for a spell.

I visited Frappr again today. There are about 140 members listed already. The map worked fine today. I was able to get in and edit. I see a lot of P15 members already on-line there. Mike, that's not to discount your idea....it may have merit as well. Just wanted to follow up on the Frappr site. John

I started the Vintage Plymouth/Dodge frapper map a couple of years ago. It was my intention for it to become a map of P15-D24 forum users, and a way for us to connect geographically, and perhaps another way for folks to find the P15-D24 forums.

Frapper was in it's infancy then. I had seen another frapper map for another group, and I thought it would be neat to make one for our group of like minded Mopar owners. I tend to forget it's there as it's been so long since I started it.

If GTK would like to make it part of this site, so that another map wouldn't need to be created, that would be fine with me. Many of us are already on this map, it seems redundant to start another.
