Joe Flanagan Posted October 27, 2009 Report Posted October 27, 2009 I don't know whether I did my math wrong or if I'm not understanding the information but it looks like the rear motor mounts from Andy B. cost $40 and the same thing from Steele is $140. What could possibly account for that difference? I know Steele is better rubber, but that's surprising. I might as well do what some of the Canadians on the forum have suggested and drill holes in a couple of hockey pucks. Quote
Rollie Posted October 27, 2009 Report Posted October 27, 2009 Autozone has them under part # em-2014 or 2014, the em-2014 is $27 and the 2014 is $8? http://www.autozone.com/autozone/catalog/parts/partsShelf.jsp?categoryDisplayName=Collision,+Body+Parts+%26+Hardware&fromType=parts&fromString=search&parentId=43-0¤tPage=1&filterByKeyWord=2014&isSearchByPartNumber=true&navValue=14300154&categoryNValue=14399999&fromWhere=&itemId=154-0&displayName=Motor+Mount&searchText=2014 Quote
David Maxwell Posted October 27, 2009 Report Posted October 27, 2009 The em2014 looks correct, but the upper portion of the 2014 does not look familiar to me. Joe Flanagan Posted October 27, 2009 Author Report Posted October 27, 2009 It's not clear to me from the Autozone site which is upper and which is lower. It looks like they show only one mount, one made by Duralast and the other by Westar. Just to make sure I understand correctly, there are two rear mounts and each mount has an upper and a lower portion, right? Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted October 27, 2009 Report Posted October 27, 2009 yes there is an upper and lower portion to the assembly Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted October 27, 2009 Author Report Posted October 27, 2009 That's what I thought. And Auto Zone had me all confused and stuff, scratching my head. I know Steele has nice rubber but I just can't see spending almost 150 bucks on two chunks of rubber. The worst that could happen is I get crappy rubber from Roberts and it fails in, what, five years? Ten years? Then I get to replace it from under the car with the engine in. What would that be like? Support the engine with a jack and unbolt it at the mounts, slip the old ones out, the new ones in, and curse myself for not buying them from Steele. Ha ha. Thinking out loud. Quote
Rollie Posted October 27, 2009 Report Posted October 27, 2009 The ones on my '51 are one piece rubber, am I missing something are do the years differ? What's the second piece look like? Quote
Rollie Posted October 27, 2009 Report Posted October 27, 2009 The em2014 looks correct, but the upper portion of the 2014 does not look familiar to me. the 2014 looks like an attempt to save material? Quote
baldbusdriver Posted October 28, 2009 Report Posted October 28, 2009 maybe you can make some out of a thick sheet or bushing of similar size polyuerathane? if its good for suspension bushings, it should be plenty strong for motor mounts and such, and as a plus, doesnt degrade with oil and other goop that tends to drip on it. Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted October 28, 2009 Author Report Posted October 28, 2009 I wonder how that would work with the vibration of the engine. Quote
baldbusdriver Posted October 28, 2009 Report Posted October 28, 2009 thats a good question. I know that poly bushings squeak more than rubber, but as far as vibes, not sure. im pretty sure there are different degrees of stiffness available, so maybe something like that will work. maybe I will give it a try when I get my engine built and see what happens. Norm's Coupe Posted October 28, 2009 Report Posted October 28, 2009 Joe, I'm not a real big fan of Andy B, but that's where my front and rear motor mounts came from. I've had them in the car since 1999 with no problems yet. That said, I have not actually looked at them since installing the engine back in 1999. Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted October 28, 2009 Author Report Posted October 28, 2009 I feel the same way. I heard Andy B. and Roberts get their rubber from the same source. Quote
Don Coatney Posted October 28, 2009 Report Posted October 28, 2009 I bought my new rear engine mounting rubber on the bay several years ago. Think I paid about 12 bucks for it. Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted October 28, 2009 Author Report Posted October 28, 2009 Thanks a million for posting that, Don. That clears up a whole lot of stuff for me. I'm at work at the moment and meant to bring my manual with me so I could see how the mounts go together but I forgot it and I've been sitting here distracted as heck. So your pictures are fantastic. But everything in them is too clean. You remind me of that Norm Abrams guy on Public TV. I just want to throw a handful of sawdust into his workshop. Quote
Young Ed Posted October 28, 2009 Report Posted October 28, 2009 Joe I think you might find by 49 the lower mounts were left off. I remember reading it was a running change during the p15s. My 48 is a very late production 48 and I only had the upper ones. Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted October 28, 2009 Author Report Posted October 28, 2009 Thanks Ed. I'm getting ready to call Roberts and order them, so that's useful information. Quote
Olddaddy Posted October 28, 2009 Report Posted October 28, 2009 I have two pair of the Upper mounts, bought for 50 model Plymouth that I was planning to put on ebay if anyone needs them. Send me a PM. Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted October 28, 2009 Author Report Posted October 28, 2009 Just talked to the guy at Roberts and he says the 49 uses both an upper and lower on each side. I went ahead and ordered them, along with the front mount, a firewall grommet set, and a new oil pan gasket. It will be like Christmas when the stuff arrives. Quote
James_Douglas Posted October 29, 2009 Report Posted October 29, 2009 I purchased a set of mounts from one of the usual suspects when I put in my rebuilt engine. I ended up with a bad vibration at idle. Don C. has felt this first hand. When I had the car down a few months back to replace the transmission, I sent an old set of front and rear mounts to Steele Rubber. They re-vulcanized them. I put that set in and the idle vibration went away and the running engine sounds/vibrations all dampened out in a major way. I suspect that many of the mounts are NORS and the rubber has gotten stiff with age. If you purchase a set, ask when they were made. If they cannot give you an answer, get a used set and send them in for rebuilding. James Quote
