I don't know whether I did my math wrong or if I'm not understanding the information but it looks like the rear motor mounts from Andy B. cost $40 and the same thing from Steele is $140. What could possibly account for that difference? I know Steele is better rubber, but that's surprising. I might as well do what some of the Canadians on the forum have suggested and drill holes in a couple of hockey pucks.

It's not clear to me from the Autozone site which is upper and which is lower. It looks like they show only one mount, one made by Duralast and the other by Westar. Just to make sure I understand correctly, there are two rear mounts and each mount has an upper and a lower portion, right?

That's what I thought. And Auto Zone had me all confused and stuff, scratching my head. I know Steele has nice rubber but I just can't see spending almost 150 bucks on two chunks of rubber. The worst that could happen is I get crappy rubber from Roberts and it fails in, what, five years? Ten years? Then I get to replace it from under the car with the engine in. What would that be like? Support the engine with a jack and unbolt it at the mounts, slip the old ones out, the new ones in, and curse myself for not buying them from Steele. Ha ha. Thinking out loud.

maybe you can make some out of a thick sheet or bushing of similar size polyuerathane? if its good for suspension bushings, it should be plenty strong for motor mounts and such, and as a plus, doesnt degrade with oil and other goop that tends to drip on it.

thats a good question. I know that poly bushings squeak more than rubber, but as far as vibes, not sure. im pretty sure there are different degrees of stiffness available, so maybe something like that will work. maybe I will give it a try when I get my engine built and see what happens.:D

Joe, I'm not a real big fan of Andy B, but that's where my front and rear motor mounts came from. I've had them in the car since 1999 with no problems yet. That said, I have not actually looked at them since installing the engine back in 1999.

Thanks a million for posting that, Don. That clears up a whole lot of stuff for me. I'm at work at the moment and meant to bring my manual with me so I could see how the mounts go together but I forgot it and I've been sitting here distracted as heck. So your pictures are fantastic. But everything in them is too clean. You remind me of that Norm Abrams guy on Public TV. I just want to throw a handful of sawdust into his workshop.

Joe I think you might find by 49 the lower mounts were left off. I remember reading it was a running change during the p15s. My 48 is a very late production 48 and I only had the upper ones.

Just talked to the guy at Roberts and he says the 49 uses both an upper and lower on each side. I went ahead and ordered them, along with the front mount, a firewall grommet set, and a new oil pan gasket. It will be like Christmas when the stuff arrives.

I purchased a set of mounts from one of the usual suspects when I put in my rebuilt engine. I ended up with a bad vibration at idle. Don C. has felt this first hand.

When I had the car down a few months back to replace the transmission, I sent an old set of front and rear mounts to Steele Rubber. They re-vulcanized them. I put that set in and the idle vibration went away and the running engine sounds/vibrations all dampened out in a major way.

I suspect that many of the mounts are NORS and the rubber has gotten stiff with age. If you purchase a set, ask when they were made. If they cannot give you an answer, get a used set and send them in for rebuilding.
