Folks,

Just happened to spot this one:

http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=290360114902&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT#ht_1837wt_960

Now at $778 and 23 hours to go. Has even "buy it now", only $1500.

I'd consider this a steel, being a complete unrestored car. Interior looks good on the pictures, body seems not too bad either...

Somebody close to Detroit go grab it!

this car has bullseye headlites. if they work, and usually they do, they are worth about $300. my car has them and it surprises me that nobody has ever noticed them. dennis

I never noticed the headlights because to me one headlight is as good as the other. Even if that bulls eye headlight is supposed to brighter, wouldn't matter. Had my coupe for 15 years and only needed the headlights about 3 times. I could put candles in mine and it wouldn't matter.:D

Please post a picture of your bullseye headlite? I never heard of them before! I would like to know more about them for my desoto....

Normspeed is right, it is alot of car for the price. I like looking at the interior to see what mine use to look like at some point long ago!:D

Seems like a lot of car for the buy it now price.

Sounds like the body needs a lot of work due to rust though. Did you notice the rear door where it meets the rocker panel on one side. Looks like the rockers may be shot too. There's probably more problems under there that we can't see, but the owner did, so he's only asking the $1500. The car does look and sound like it's fixable though, but just needs a lot of body work on the bottom side. The biggest problem at the price though, it's a 4 door sedan. Would cost you more to fix the body than the car would be worth afterward. If it was a 2 door sedan or hardtop, or 4 door hardtop, then it would be worth more fixed up and you wouldn't mind sinking the money and time into it.

Berkley isn't that big a town. I could call, and just go over to look at it. And my son-in-law said he would like a DeSoto, since I took him to the convention last summer.

But my wife says: "Don't you bid on that car! You already have a full garage."

And I don't want to leave my Suburban out in the cold while I played with a '53 sedan with extensive lower body rust.

By the way, that '53 has an automatic transmission, or is it a '53 only torque converter trans that shares the oil with the engine?

I guess if one of you guys were interested in the car, I could go look at it and report back.

We have a member on here who lives in Berkley. but I know it's not his car. The listing was posted by Paul Curtis for someone he knows.

Would that be the Paul Curtis of the POC, he had a 63 Fury at the 2002 Maryland national, that had like 16000 original miles on it. It was for sale at the time. Tony C

That car seems to be a mixture of very nice and real rusty.

Guess someone took good care of it, but the weather got it as well.

That is the same Paul. It's not his car, he just posted it for someone he knows.

Why don't you buy it, Uncle? Shipping would be tough but I'm sure you'd give it a good home. Oh, right. I guess you would like to stay married.

Well, I got cheated really bad an year back by a forwarder who "took care of" shipping a car from Michigan to Finland for me. Ended up paying ca. 4500 bucks his dues on top of $2500 freight cost... Also the car turned out a real rust bucket which I had to get rid of (to save my marriage)...

Thus I'm a bit shy for a while now.

By the way: The DeSoto auction was closed at $900, reserve not met. I suppose reserve must be very near to BIN price $1500. Will be relisted soon, I suppose...

Would be really nice if Donald Smith could check the car for us. I could re-consider taking it over the pond...

I didn't get the local 248 phone number that was given with the e-bay description. (There was a zero in the next three numbers, usual for a cell phone.) Now that the bidding is closed, the description has been deleted. Did anyone get the phone number?

Donald,

The number is 248-605-1440, owner is called John.

Well Uncle, don't feel bad I had a similar thing happen to me, thinking that the guy I was talking to on thephone was a good guy. I bought a 51 club coupe from a guy in Maine that was selling it for his friends widow. The only rust that he could see was a little around the trunk handle, it is hard to believe that he missed the BIG hole in the inner fender well, under the battery, seeing how he chipped in a new battery with the purchase. The frame was so rusted that I wouldn't drive. I don't think I should mention his name here, but if you want it PM me and I will give it to you. I paid $5000 for the car and $1200 for shipping it to California, sold it on ebay for $1200, and was happy to get rid of it. Tony C

John the owner returned my call. I live across the street from his son. He heard I have a DeSoto also. I invited him to come over and look at my car the next time he's in the neighborhood. (Or maybe I'll drive my Suburban over to visit his car.)

His 53 DeSoto is still for sale. He's got some offers on the car, but nothing final yet. I told him that if anyone on the forum is interested, I can take a look at his car and report back.

The car runs, but one brake cylinder is shot, so the car is not drivable. Deal breaker to some, no bid deal to others.

There is some rust in the floorboards and trunk, plus whatever showed up in the photo where the the rocker panel meets the rear fender flare. The extent of rust will put some people off, but is of little concern to others. It depends how handy one is. (I'm not quite handy enough. The kids got me a budget welder, but I haven't learned how to weld yet.)

The car drives like an automatic, with a selector for R n and D, but has a clutch pedal, so it may be that one-year torque converter fluid drive thing.

One thing for certain, my wife says that I cannot buy it.
