Joe Flanagan Posted October 15, 2009 Report Posted October 15, 2009 Now that the weather has turned, I have to abandon my painting. Luckily everything is either finished or in primer, so I can let it sit over the winter. I will be installing the engine soon and was wondering about motor mounts. Would you guys recommend using Steele Rubber, since they seem to have the best quality? Has anyone used the other vendors and had the rubber crack, split, etc.? The body mounts I got from Roberts are already splitting and I only installed them about a year ago. The rubber parts for the front suspension that I got from Bernbaum about 7 years ago are starting to split, too, though that could be dry rot. Quote
Frank Elder Posted October 15, 2009 Report Posted October 15, 2009 Were the parts from Andy NOS, because I think Norm's coupe said it best..old original isn't always what you want in rubber, I would go with fresh if it is available. Quote
Niel Hoback Posted October 16, 2009 Report Posted October 16, 2009 As you know, old rubber can't be trusted. Always use new rubber when you can get it. Get your minds out of the gutter, you, over there in the corner. Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted October 16, 2009 Author Report Posted October 16, 2009 Who, me? I wasn't even thinking that way until you led me into it, Niel. I don't recall whether I bought NOS or got new. I think the body mounts were new. Not sure about the Bernbaum stuff. That was at the start of my project and I didn't know any better. Quote
Frank Elder Posted October 16, 2009 Report Posted October 16, 2009 Back in the bad old days people used to use hockey pucks, instead of spacers, canucks speak up...red green:D Quote
aero3113 Posted October 16, 2009 Report Posted October 16, 2009 Neil do you have a camera in my house? How did you know I was in the corner?? Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted October 16, 2009 Report Posted October 16, 2009 lets leave Red Green out of this..I think he has been cloned...at least it appears as such at work.. Quote
Niel Hoback Posted October 16, 2009 Report Posted October 16, 2009 Keep your stick on the ice, remember, we're all in this together. If the women don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy. Have I ruined this thread yet? Quote
Rollie Posted October 16, 2009 Report Posted October 16, 2009 I bought a new front mount from autozone of all places. Can't speak of longevity yet but it looks like a nice piece. Quote

Joe Flanagan Posted October 16, 2009 Author Report Posted October 16, 2009 Thanks for the link, Rollie. Got a fair amount of color sanding to do on the pieces I painted and then on to the mechanics. Weather is rainy and in the 40s, so I'm a bit limited at the moment. Quote
Rodney Bullock Posted October 16, 2009 Report Posted October 16, 2009 Yeah, the rain is depressing. I want to do some work on the truck but it's to cold, my little hands get stiff(quiet niel) Joe, those rubber parts will split however that does not mean they are no good. All the spacers I put in when I had my body above the frame have those lines in them however they are not lop sided or hitting metal to metal. This is a good time to start with the motor. Don't forget to prelube the motor. I am in the process of replacing the front fenders on the truck(1953) I got my fenders at fall Carlise. I have been looking at those chrome running boards and got my wife in love with them. I think there are some new parts coming in my future. My painter and I are coordinating a paint /install move. I need some consistant 60 degree days.:Dkeep going Joe spring is just a day away. Quote
greg g Posted October 16, 2009 Report Posted October 16, 2009 I believe I got mine (front mount) from Terrel parts in Texas ( on the vendor list) for 15 or 18 bucks, but that was 5 years ago or so. Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted October 16, 2009 Author Report Posted October 16, 2009 Rodney, I know you have cabin fever over there, too. That's good to know about the mounts. I used assembly lube when I put the engine together. But I pulled a classic, as I think you know. I forgot to install the crankshaft-to-flywheel bolts in their holes at the end of the crankshaft. Now I have to pull the oil pan and destroy the new cork gasket I have. I can't see another way around it. Quote
