Hello,

Does anyone have any info regarding if the hood light was a true option or not? Also, How how do I make one for my 48 Ply. I want to do a Red light to make mine "Rudolph the red nose Plymouth" since mine is Suemac Red!

Thanks,

Ernie Baily

The lighting fixture for the ornaments of the period were aftermarket, sold by accessory outlets like JC Whitney and other similar places. I purchased a plastic side marker light holder generic to most gm cars, and run the 12 V lamp on 6V so it has a glow rather than a bright light. Check with your local vehicle and traffic laws, as here it is illegal to display a red light visible to the front of the vehicle on non emergency vehicles. I believe that the only factory lighted ornament was the potiac indian chief.

The red would be nice with your car but might get you a citation from your local constabulary.

get the one similar in shape to this one without the round gasket attachment, it is some what flexible and just pushes into the ornament and holds itself in place.

At one time I thought about putting a light in my hood ornament. But........then I ask myself. "How many times do I drive the car in the dark"? I don't think I've used my headlights on my coupe more than 3 or 4 times in 15 years. So........came to the conclusion that the hood ornament would be both a waste a money and time to install it.;) Might want to consider that because that light won't show up in the daylight.

where can you buy the assembly, that fits in the hood ornament?

You can't...UNLESS someone here has an extra to sell of once in a blue moon once shows up on Ebay. I bought two small 12v accessory lights from Auto Zone and installed them in mine; one in the front and one in the back.

Here's how one of mine is made. Came off a car in a salvage yard, but

appears to be the correct aftermarket item. Naturally, there is a wire

attached - which I hook to my low beam headlight post on the left inner

fender. Comes on only when headlights on low.....goes out if I bring up

the high beams.

THERE WAS A PICTURE THERE, BUT WAS REMOVED DUE TO CERTAIN

AESTHETIC CONSIDERATIONS -- RIGHT GREG??

see the next post..........

I see what you mean, Greg. But I can't change it since the light is now inside

the hood ornament. Maybe rotate to sideways..............?

Those light kits would be easy to make if one wanted one.

That said, Plymouth isn't the only car that had a plastic insert for the hood ornament, or a light kit for it. Of course DeSoto also had the plastic insert one year. But........Pontiac also had one. So.........maybe check some of the vendors for Pontiac. They may be reproducing them for Pontiac.

For everyone's information, that hood light kit that was on e bay ended up selling for.....

.........$96.

I'm not certain that this is the "spot" to advertise, so sorry, in advance if I am breaking the rules. I simply wanted to state that I have the original, clear insert, brand new old stock, not a repo. but with the DPDC stamp in/on it if anyone is interested. It is factory sealed in plastic and never been touched. I have owned this part for many years, thought was that someday, I would own another P-15, but that has not happened. Asking $125.00. If is PERFECT in every way. Again, sorry if this posting is not legal and needs removed, I understand. Thanks All!!!
