michael.warshaw Posted October 6, 2009 Report Posted October 6, 2009 im looking for a ny license plate from 1947 anyone know a place where i can get a plate? Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted October 6, 2009 Report Posted October 6, 2009 About the only place you can get a vintage plate is from a vendor at a swap meet, or someplace like ebay, and then you may have to restore it, or have someone do it for you. Quote
woodie49 Posted October 6, 2009 Report Posted October 6, 2009 They have quite a few on EBAY. You need to make sure that they are cleared with the DMV if you intend to use them to operate your car. If you are going to slap them on for show, then it really doesn't matter. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted October 6, 2009 Report Posted October 6, 2009 check state law..if you use this as a YOM tag the tag may have to be inspected and proved by DMV as original to validate the tag for use..usually after the initial inspection refreshing the tag would be easy and not jeprodize your investment...that is how the law is written in some couple states...Georgia being one of these..e-bay for you will be the quickest and easiest method of getting one I am sure..go to the HAMB and post a wanted add..lots of viewers there...I would venture to say that in one hour it surpasses our daily exchange.. Some states demand that the plate has to be original too, no refurbishing. Quote
HalfdollarMayflower Posted October 6, 2009 Report Posted October 6, 2009 I'd second the ebay nomination. Got my 1950 Texas plates in near mint condition for 35 bucks on the 'bay. Swap meet rats wanted $50-75 for downright nasty '50 plates. I should note, however, that I called my DMV before the purchase to ensure that the plate would be acceptible. Some states do funky things like require an alpha character whereas 60 years ago the plates might have been all numeric. Gary Quote

Rollie Posted October 6, 2009 Report Posted October 6, 2009 I spent a lot of time using Google to find mine. Quote
adam_knox Posted October 6, 2009 Report Posted October 6, 2009 Michael, some states had metal tags that "renewed" the plates each year. Here in Wisconsin they never manufactured a plate in 49, so I have 1947 plates with a metal "49" tag that goes on the plate. Don't know about NY, just giving ya' a heads up when shopping around. Took me two years to figure why I was never coming across an original 49 plate! Quote
Frank Elder Posted October 6, 2009 Report Posted October 6, 2009 Nebraska never had a 47 plate either just a 46 with a metal tag. Quote
