Yeah, if you're actually interested in having the drum come off, not just spend a day banging uselessly, you really do need the old-school, heavy-as-all-get-out, actually-forged out of good 'ol American steel, deal. I tried a "modern equivalent" and never got anywhere with it. The primeval one I got on eBay cost about $70, finally, weighs about 30 lbs, and can be smacked with a 20-lb sledge if necessary (as it sometimes is). This is one of those cases where overkill isn't.

JIPJOBXX,

I would love to own a brake drum puller for my'67 Bug! The car's ready for winter except tires and brakes, or so I thought until I decided to put it on jack stands to replace the rear brake shoes and found not a single shop, rental center or auto parts house that has ever heard of one of them. One young man told me he seemed to remember his uncle mentioning them once. I can't find one anywhere and would love to buy this one but there are several days left on the bidding and the local VW shop will probably know where to rent one if they don't have one they'll loan me.

I still think Norm's idea is best, where you crack the nut and drive in tight circles, but the Bug is in dire need of tires and insurance before it's driven anywhere.

Or just rent one when you need one!!!

Yep pay someone else for it, me i would rather own it than rent one, try needing one in a pinch at say 8:30 at night, then try and rent one.

Randy, i think i paid 45 for mine a few months back, make sure it has the knocker part with it.

I picked one up when I was with Mac Tools. It has a hex end which a 1 1/4" socket goes on. Pops them babies right off. Well worth the investment.
