What electronics does your 60 + year old car have??? There is a wiring circuit that was posted a while ago I found it the other day, but it was pretty free of electronic items.

Michael,

The sum total of electronics in our cars approaches the null set, as mentioned by Greg. The electrical system, the complete entire electrical system, for securing the output of the generator into the car's system dependent upon it consists of one wire.

I think I can help you here, as well as can many others on this forum. I was raised with The Beach Boys in South Califormula in the mid-60's and having at least a passing knowledge of cars was a 'Rite Of Passage'. Then I joined the Navy and started learning about some of the most sophisticated and elaborate engineering propulsion systems ever developed, and at the end of my service I married into a NASCAR family. Wrenching has always been a part of my adult life and as such it is difficult for me to discern between that which I have been taught and what is common sense, realizing all the while that as I am taught more the other questions fall into place under the title of common sense.

I recall the pics you posted of your car while it was still on the trailer, and it is a beauty! Now's as good a time as any to get to know that pretty lady that just moved in with you, and as has been mentioned before the best way to do that is get an owner's manual. Look-up the diagram of the way the generator is wired to the voltage regulator but don't try to memorize it; draw it instead, with the names of the posts to which each end of the wire is connected. While you're looking at the manual take it out to your car and find every wire (there aren't that many, like, three) and grasp it and say it's name and tell it why it is there, which way electricity flows through it and where the electricity goes after that. Sounds complicated but shouldn't take more than a few minutes with each wire, and once you learn that you've learned everything there is to know about wiring one of these cars. Some wires are thicker than others because they need to carry more electricity, and that's important to know because copper was over-priced in 1948 just like it is in 2009 and they wouldn't have used more expensive wiring if they didn't need to.

Now, other than a few very specific items, you know as much about wiring these cars as anybody here. Learn it for yourself because your education can never be taken away from you.

You'll develop a stronger relationship with your car by learning her. Nobody has ever tried to memorize the shop manual (that's why the 'table of content' and 'index' were invented) but if you get in a little theory backed by a little practical factors and hands-on experience you will be asked something about it by a friend one day soon and you'll be able to explain it to him and know you're correct. That, Sir, is a 'Rite Of Passage' unequaled!

Never stop asking questions and soon you'll be answering them for somebody else. I am glad you joined us at this forum and I'm only trying to make your journey easier and more enjoyable.
