55 Fargo Posted July 3, 2009 Report Posted July 3, 2009 Hi all, installed a Roberts Universal cowl vent seal, it was very easy to do. I hope it seals well against water, my drain tube is clear, so that works. My car dfoes not stay outside when not in uise, nor does it see much rain, as I live on a gravel road, and will not drive it on there in rain, if I can help it. Also included some morning pics of the ole girl, still need the bumpers re-chromed, and the stainless polished.....................Fred Quote
Jims50chrysler Posted July 3, 2009 Report Posted July 3, 2009 Hi Fred: can you just slide those gaskets over the lid of the cowl vent or do you have to remove the unit first? are they held in with weather stripping glue? Jim Quote
55 Fargo Posted July 3, 2009 Author Report Posted July 3, 2009 Jim, that may be possible, but it may be hard to slide the vent seal into place with the sealant. I removed mine, it was easy to do...........Fred Quote
normanpitkin Posted July 3, 2009 Report Posted July 3, 2009 is that a new yorker?will the roberts one fit my 48 new yorker and did you use any glue as well?Lot of stories about the vent seal being too small/different sizes etc,I am slightly confused!! thanks, william, lovely colour by the way.. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted July 3, 2009 Report Posted July 3, 2009 Fred, you have that car lookin' mighty fine!! It's come a long way under your care. I guess the wire mesh on the cowl vents may have been kind of shiny, like new screen wire when new. Wonder how a person can clean it up some? Mine is about half painted yellow like the car......the lower half is a sort of brownish color. Quote

Thanx Bob, yah the screen, I have thought about pulling iout, and painting it black, or giving it an acid wash to turn it black, but what the heck, most of them look like mine or yours.......... 55 Fargo Posted July 3, 2009 Author Report Posted July 3, 2009 Nah it's the shorter little brother Royal. I used the Roberts elcheapo, universal seal, it is not joined you cut to length, then I glued down half, let dry, then glued down other half, with joint at the rear dead center. I used 3M weatherstrip sealant.........Fred Quote
greg g Posted July 3, 2009 Report Posted July 3, 2009 Fred the old girl looks good in her new makeup. On your bumpers, try some fine steel wool and some laquer thinner and go over the ehole thing, whe done with that treatment, ball up some aluminum foil and rub it over the places that have rust. might make enough difeence that you can leave them on and save up a couple bushels of loonies to get them done. Thanx Greg, I have had an estimate, for $625.00 Canadian or $531.00 US, for both bumpers, which is not bad these days Quote
55 Fargo Posted July 3, 2009 Author Report Posted July 3, 2009 The bumper are reall sracthed, and flaky big time, it might be best to sand blast them and paint them to match car, that would cost me $20 for the sandblasting, I already have the paint. But I love chrome, I actually know where a fairly decent set of bumpers for my car happen to be, but the owner wants me to buy the whole car, don't need another car around, he won't part it out...........
