aero3113 Posted June 4, 2009 Report Posted June 4, 2009 Anyone know what the going price is for a new mechanical fuel pump? Rock Auto has them for $51.79 is that the going rate? Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted June 4, 2009 Report Posted June 4, 2009 Have you checked any of your local auto stores? They can sometimes get those items.....I think. Quote
desoto1939 Posted June 4, 2009 Report Posted June 4, 2009 For about the same price you can pick up a 6v or 12v electric Airtex fp at the flea markets. These newere pumps are not affected by the ethanol that has been added to the gas and also act as a backup to the mechanical pump if it fails. The electircal will pump throught the mechanical if it goes south. Also this willhelp if you get a vapor lock on the old flat head engines in the summer. You might want to consider this over the old mechanical first. rich desoto1939@aol.com Quote

desoto1939 Posted June 4, 2009 Report Posted June 4, 2009 What year car are you looking for send me the car and the year and model and I might beable to tell you the AC model number. I know that my 39 Desoto flat 6 used the AC 588. Knowing the model is very important for when you go into the store. This helps the sales clerk since they do not have the knowledge of the older cars and sometimes the books do not go back far enough or they do not want to spend the time to look it up for up. rich desoto1939@aol.com Quote
Young Ed Posted June 4, 2009 Report Posted June 4, 2009 Any new pump you buy now should be ethanol safe too. Just don't buy a 30 year old new one off ebay etc. I rebuilt both the pumps on my car and truck with kits from antique auto cellar. I run ethanol gas in both with no issues. Quote
oldmopar Posted June 4, 2009 Report Posted June 4, 2009 The rockauto price should be close to the napa price maybe a few $'s cheaper as you pay shipping but no sales tax. I ordered the airtex electric pump that was discussed on the forum from them it should arrive tomorrow. No real reason other then I want to try a electric and was having fuel problems that may be related to the old pump. If you use rockauto here is a 5% discount code good until july 26 17924351413745 Quote
aero3113 Posted June 4, 2009 Author Report Posted June 4, 2009 Rock auto calls out for a Carter mechanical pump (M847) is there a difference between an AC (AC588) or a Carter? Quote
Young Ed Posted June 4, 2009 Report Posted June 4, 2009 Few guys have had trouble with tehe ac588 one shedding its pin that holds the arm in. If it was me I'd try the carter. Quote
aero3113 Posted June 4, 2009 Author Report Posted June 4, 2009 Do new pumps come with a gasket? Quote
oldmopar Posted June 4, 2009 Report Posted June 4, 2009 The last one I got from napa about a year ago did not I made my own Quote
power_hungry Posted June 5, 2009 Report Posted June 5, 2009 What is vapor lock? Definition I found online: Noun 1. a stoppage in a pipeline caused by gas bubbles (especially a stoppage that develops in hot weather in an internal-combustion engine when fuel in the gas line boils and forms bubbles that block the flow of gasoline to the carburetor) (synonym) vapour lock (hypernym) blockage, block, closure, occlusion, stop, stoppage I believe the problem is not so much that the bubbles "block" the gas flow, but that the gas in the hot fuel pump boils, turning into vapor, which does not pump nearly as well as liquid gasoline. The needle valve in the carb would keep gas line slightly pressurized, which helps prevent boiling, but if it leaks or the float drops, the pressure is relieved. Quote

P-12 Tommy Posted June 6, 2009 Report Posted June 6, 2009 (edited) :DSpeaking of fuel pumps...... I bought a fuel pump a few years ago as a spare. It's an AC 9418 and when I got it, it didn't look like the one in the P-12 manual. It has no gl*** bowl. Here is some pics. Let me know if this pump will actually fit. Thanks, Tom Edited June 6, 2009 by P-12 Tommy To reword a bit Quote
aero3113 Posted June 6, 2009 Author Report Posted June 6, 2009 (edited) I ordered the Carter fuel pump today from rock auto to keep as a spare. I am getting married end of July on Shelter Island (east end of long island NY in between the fork)and we are using the Plymouth in our wedding. I want to have a spare fuel pump because the drive to Shelter Island is about a 2 hour drive and I hear they can fail without warning. Is there anything else that I should keep in the trunk as a spare besides a tire? Edited June 6, 2009 by aero3113 Quote
T120 Posted June 6, 2009 Report Posted June 6, 2009 I take it you meant Carter fuel pump.If you're carrying spare parts for a 2 hour trip you're probably better prepared than most.Usually all I have in the trunk is spare fluids -water,gas,oil,and brake fluid, plus a basic set of tools including a pair of coveralls...Someone in the past included a photo of their emergency road kit - a cellphone Quote
aero3113 Posted June 6, 2009 Author Report Posted June 6, 2009 (edited) My bad, carter fuel pump. I'm not too worried the day of the wedding just the drive out. I am going to take the car out a few days early so if there are any problems I can hopefully fix it before the big day.I know its not that long of a trip just want to be prepared.
