Searched the forum with no answers. I am ready to take my newly aquired bed off the frame, but the bolts just spin round and round. I can't grab them with anything, so what is the best way to get the bolts loose? I was hoping not to have to hot wrench them. Bud

Bud,

I have a honkin'' big 15 amp nine-inch grinder. I just hit each of the six bolt heads with that and blew 'em right off. Of course, the wood had mostly rotted away, so I could get up close and personal with each bolt.

Worked for me . . .

Good luck.

Bud I had the same problem I tryed a lot of things the last was to weld a nut to the top of the bolt :) Carl

I thought about the same thing too. I have a bunch of lug nuts that the taper would probably work well to weld to. thanks, Bud

If the wood is gone bolt cutters will cut them right off.

wood is still there albeit pretty crappy. I think I will weld the lug nuts on top of the heads and see if that will work. Bud

I tore out my old wood, took a hand grinder to the bolts like others did. Took five minutes, less time then it will take to weld bolts. You will use new bolts anyway. But each to his own! Have fun!

Just removed my box from a B1D. Used vice grips to hold the hex bolt (top side)., and used heat (map gas); PB blaster and air impact to remove the nuts. Believe me, mine were really rusted living in coastal VA. Remember, to heat the nut only.

moxie,

I also have a B-1-D and a few weeks away from bed removal myself. How many bolts am I looking for?

Speaking of taking the beds off how in the world do you get those phillips head screws out to take the bed apart and the fenders off?

I drilled the center out with an 1/8 inch bit and progressively worked up till the heads just popped off. I tried soaking the threads and impacting them off, but to no avail. Bud

The fender bolts on my bed had sheet metal nuts not regular nuts. I was able to remove some of them by clamping a vice grip on the exterior edge and unscrewing. The rest I removed with a cut off wheel. It all appeared to be factory. The fenders were also glued in place with a rubber seam sealer. Under the seam sealer was shiny black paint. I removed the six large bolts holding the bed to the frame with a cut off wheel. Make sure to check that you remove the lower brace frame the bed before lifting. It attaches near the rear of the leaf spring and keeps the lower side of the bed from flexing.

I gave the 126" B-1-D. You all are telling me there are 6 bolts but I think there are really 8. I can only see them from underneath because there is a plate welded into the bed. Yesterday I cut off 8 bolts. today I hope to enlist some help to lift off the bed.

Do I need to remove the fenders form the bed or can I lift them off with it?

Thanks

Sam

Bud,

I don't know about your bed but I was able to grab the bolt with needle nose vise grips in between the bed support.

Hope this helps?:o

Jim Masters

I ended up just grinding off the heads. works for me! :D Bud
