Memphis 1947 D24 Posted May 15, 2009 Report Posted May 15, 2009 Hello - I need a car cover for a 1947 D24 four door sedan. I purchased one from AutoAnything made out of clothe. It fit and looked great, but the squirrels ate holes in it with in six months. Any recommendations for a cover manufacturer that would be canvas, vinyl or rubber - rodent proof. Thanks in advance. - Max Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted May 15, 2009 Report Posted May 15, 2009 shoot about 127 of the squirrels, feed the homeless with the meat, tan the hides, sew a cover, place on car as an example to what few squirrels may be left in the area... in all truth, you find a good way to get rid of the squirrels..I am interested..! nasty little trespassers Quote

Plymouthy Adams Posted May 15, 2009 Report Posted May 15, 2009 (edited) I had (keyword had) a squirrel that built a nest on top of my 250 Ram Van I use for transporting cars on the trailer. This guy not only nested but eat the wiring to the distributor pickup and the plastic vacuum lines for the htr/AC controls. I was to go deliver a car when I discovered this problem..so I fix it complete with 42.00 new dist pickup. All set to go..next evening after work..get in the van..rrrrrr..no start..little joker did it all again overnight..so I spend next two hours rewiring and fixing said damage..when I returned from my trip I parked the van and shot the squirrel as he went straight to his used to be home..(tree rat and rice) so..I do feel your pain..and still have more of them critters than I care to look at...destructive little varmints... if they do respond with an treatment to the car cover that acts as a repellant, please do post that here...so far Ihave been lucky on my covers...I have a few on cars out in the barn.. BobT-47P15 Posted May 15, 2009 Report Posted May 15, 2009 Don't know if this would be rodent proof or not - but my last car cover (which was stolen off the 54 Plymouth out beside my house) was purchased at Wal Mart. It was white, and a sort of plastic material like those plastic blue tarps. Think it cost about $75 or so. Got the "large" size. Fit fairly well. Quote

Bingster Posted May 15, 2009 Report Posted May 15, 2009 Are there any issues with condensation under the cover and rusting or anything? Quote
Don Coatney Posted May 15, 2009 Report Posted May 15, 2009 I would think it best to find one that repels rain (moisture) but still "breathes" and allows evaporation if such a cover can be found. Quote
Dennis Hemingway Posted May 15, 2009 Report Posted May 15, 2009 I have California Car Covers for my cars so far I have not had any problems with the squirrels or mice, but it's only in a squirrel neighborhood for 1 week a year. Dennis:cool: http://www.calcarcover.com/ Quote
JIPJOBXX Posted May 16, 2009 Report Posted May 16, 2009 I use a one that I bought at Costco and it works great but I use it more to keep the dust of mine as my car sits in a car port. Cost around $35 dollars. Check it out and see if it will work for you. Fits really good also. Jon Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted May 16, 2009 Report Posted May 16, 2009 Bob;Did the wind steal it? Don, Nope, the wind didn't steal it. Some person did. Guess I should have used that cable that runs under the car and has a little padlock. The cover was on the car for a while, I took it off for a time, then put it back on. Went out on a Sunday morning to get the paper......cover was gone. Our local police dept said they would look in their travels - but who knows where it could have gone. Stuff happens once in a while in our neighborhood. Quote
Normspeed Posted May 17, 2009 Report Posted May 17, 2009 California Car Cover makes great stuff and they might be worth a call if your budget isn't too tight. They made up a beauty for my 53 wagon. They actually had the pattern for it already. Cost over $300 though. Haven't used it except to test the fit. Not much squirrel activity here in the desert. We have these instead. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted May 17, 2009 Report Posted May 17, 2009 IF you need to sit your car in the weather then the cost of the high dollar cover is a necessity..they must repel and yet at the same time allow any moisture under th cover to evap without blistering the paint/finish. NO poly tarp is going to allow that..nd based on this and where you dpark the car..will the tarp stay in place..(vandals) if you have your car in inside storage the need only here is to protect from local dust/debris fallout of the immediate area..Budge makes a whole line of cover that will suit this need for about a 50.00 bill or there abouts..last Budge I bought was 42.00 for a cull size Chrysler...just got one new in box at a discount store for 15.00..most of my cars are covered while still in a protected shelder from direct sun,. rain and fallout. Don Jordan Posted May 18, 2009 Report Posted May 18, 2009 I know this may sound silly but I just had my car painted and I worry about putting on a cover that might scratch the paint. We have a lot of wind here and I'm thinking that a lot of wind might affect the paint. I got a cover from a company on e-bay but it ripped and it took forever to get a refund. Right now my car is at the upholsterer's so it's indoors. Problem is I have a "two car garage" that only holds one car - and I've got two cars. The cover seems important. Quote
Memphis 1947 D24 Posted May 18, 2009 Author Report Posted May 18, 2009 My car sits in the driveway in front of the house and the squirrels ate holes in the top of the cover. The cover is PR for the neighborhood. I am on a tight budget so all the suggestions are helpful. Max Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted May 18, 2009 Report Posted May 18, 2009 tell ya what I heard...cayenne pepper is a natural squirrel repellant..maybe lace the lining a bit with that... Quote
David Maxwell Posted May 19, 2009 Report Posted May 19, 2009 ...covers fit great on the P15 4-door. Not sure about the D24 Quote
