East Bound And Broke Down....The Whole Story

Well guys, the Plymouth let me down.

My buddy Jeffrey and his wife Davina and I made it to Austin and enjoyed the show. He trailered his 60's styled hot rod "T". Met up with Normspeed and a few other loyal Plymouth owners. Rebuilt my starter. Enjoyed the ride of the radials. Had a fantastic time!

Then on the way home I had a problem. I was about 250 miles from Austin and started having trouble with the transmission. Pulled off the road, jacked it up and checked the fluid. Put in about a 1/2 quart in the OD. Checked the solenoid. Checked the linkage. Lowered the car and hit the road.

Drove about another 10 miles and it got real bad. I pulled over and after a few reservations we unloaded the "T" and loaded up the Plymouth.

Long story short I ended up driving the "T" about 960 miles.

Wow. That's all that can be said about my trip. I hope to have some pics and a link soon for all to enjoy.

This is only a minor set back and will not keep me from trusting my car. This is something that can't be explained, yet....

T-5 time!

I like where your head is. If you can fabricate a way to use the factory column shift I'll buy it from you and run a T-5:D

Now that would take some thought!!

What were the symptoms of the transmission?

It wasn't in OD and it wasn't in conventional drive. The cable could be moved anytime. It had no reverse and would grind when put in. It would freewheel but would grind. When I got it into conventional drive completely it would make some nasty noises upon deceleration.

Dang... that sounds like a long haul in the T... sounds like your buddy is the man, hauling the plymouth and letting you put some miles on the his car!

Do you think the transmission failed because it was low on fluid? I haven't checked mine since I installed it... might be time...

Ron;

I noticed in the HAMB pictures that you are having difficulty bending your middle finger as it was always pictured sticking straight out. There may be surgical procedures that can correct that. Ask your doctor what is right for you:cool:

Looks like you had a great trip even with the challanges. Was it fun doing nineteen hours in the bucket on slicks?

Ciallis affects people differently. Unfortunately my middle finger got the treatment.

As for driving that car, It was a complete blast! Hit heavy rain for about 10 miles and it stayed attached to the road. I was a bit wet but dried after only a few miles.

The ride in a T bucket has got to be the thrill of a life time. The Plymouth had a minor set back. I pass modern era cars on the road broke down all the time. It can happen to any car. The good news is once you crack the trans open and fix the problem It will not happen again in your life time

Thank you for the vote of confidence. I am excited to tear into it.

Sorry the OD acted up on you BK. At least it's something you can fix given some time and parts searching. Meanwhile, a standard 3 speed will bolt right in, same length as the OD unit so you can use the same driveshaft.

I had a great time in Austin and really enjoyed meeting you and your buds.

Oh, and Grandadeo had a bit of trouble in his deuce out in Texas as well, so you were not alone. He tells me the ignition switch went south and he had to rig a remote starter switch up, routed through his shift boot, to make the starter work. All repairs performed in a Wal Mart parking lot

I think maybe you cooked the rollers in the freewheeling cage. You'll know for sure when you tear it down. Good luck and let us know if you need tips on fixing it.
