Hand brake Question:What the hell is it?

It is not what is in my repair manual, or pics of what I have seen on here for what is supposed to be on my car? (1949 Windsor)

I need to replace the pads and seal (nice job installing the seal if you look close you can see where they used a fillips head screw driver to install it..can't believe that leaked LOL) I also need to figure out how this thing originally connected to the hand brake because the crappy brazing job along with some wrapped wire to hold it in place ain't cuttin it.

Thats a pic of the handbrake mechanism that hangs on the rear of the gearbox.......its exactly the same as that used up to the late 50's.....whats the problem?(apart from the stuffed seal and oil soaked brake shoes).......it appears to be basically all there, I think, tho the actual handbrake cable doesn't appear to be there.......andyd

Yeah, that looks just about like the E brake on my 59 Dodge wagon with a 361 and automatic 3 speed.

Interesting. The parking brake on my 1933 uses a contracting band. And the parking brake on the 1963 D200 I used to have was also a contracting band. So I figured everything in between used contracting bands too. Learn something new every day.

The 51 dodge I helped swap to an OD had that type of parking brake on the gyromatic. It now has the contracting band type that the OD had.

I haven't seen this type before either... My stock '50 and my '55 OD transmissions both have the band type of e-brake.

My repair manual shows it should have the band type and the cable coming out of the brake was brazed on to the cable coming from the brake handle??? does anyone have a drawing on how this works so I can take replace the shoes and put it back together properly? Also since it is not the correct brake, I don't know what shoes and seal this is supposed to fit on to get the replacement parts.

The shoes I would think just have to be relined like wheel brake shoes. Perhaps your car has a later early 50s trans swapped into it.

Is that a self adjusting brake system on there? Looks like it might be. If so, someone may have swapped rearends at some point. Check the rearend part number to see if it's original. If not, look up to see what rearend you have, then you'll be able to determine how to repair it with the proper cable, etc.

Norm thats his transmission but yes its self adjusting. Curious that they had a self adjusting parking brake in the early 50s but didn't get that applied to the service brakes for 10 or so more years.

That is not a self adjuster it is a manual. the seal should have a number on it find that and have the parts house cross it. the cable should not be brazed, someone has hacked it. that type was used up till 62. try a 58 or so for parts. the hand brake works the same way by cable, if it pulls and works don't worry or buy a new cable, but you will have to splice it as the mounting on the drum is different from the band.
