makkelsay Posted April 19, 2009 Report Posted April 19, 2009 im planning on going to school this summer and want to do a certificate program since my degrees classes arent offerend during the summer my choices are either welding or ase mechanic both are extremely useful in what i want to do as a second job but i just cant decide which one i should do this summer and they are both 1290hrs for completion any suggestions? makkelsay Posted April 19, 2009 Author Report Posted April 19, 2009 im putting the car on hold for now till its move is finished im looking at the 2 classes because getting a career firefighter job around these parts is hard and need something to bring in money that is a profession rather than a fly by night job i think im going to do the welding classes since i know i can find a job doing it and it would make life a lot easier when i redo everything on my car! and my classes are only available during the fall/spring semsters so this is just to make my resume and skills better Quote
RobertKB Posted April 19, 2009 Report Posted April 19, 2009 Welding would have been my suggestion. You can use that lots when doing the bodywork on your car and welders are always in demand. Good to see you have a plan and a backup plan if needed. Good luck with eventually getting a firefighting career. Quote

Good luck with eventually getting a firefighting career. thanks man! the local department for which i have politics with has a freeze on applications and has no plan on lifting it for sometime.... but ill probably be going to welding school because i like fabricating and such alot more than engine work..and then i can make the car perfect! dezeldoc Posted April 19, 2009 Report Posted April 19, 2009 Having just hit that magical 50 mark last week, I can tell you it is much eaiser for me to weld than to spend all day bent over or twisted up in a car somehow! I put a cheater lens in my helmet now I can see the welds! I am still nursing a pinched nerve in my neck that put my right hand out of commision for the past 3 weeks, and being the idiot i am and having cars to finish it is hell to work with a numb hand. You are young and have a lot of choices to choose from so think hard and look at different jobs that take less physical labor and more brain! A good friend once told me " I can make more money with a pencel than you can busting your back all day " My youngest boy is going to EMT school and is going to try and get on as a firefighter when he finishes his school, so keep plugging away!! Norm's Coupe Posted April 19, 2009 Report Posted April 19, 2009 I agree with the others. The welding classes would be much better than the auto mechanic classes. There is nothing wrong with becoming an ase mechanic, and you can earn a good living doing it. But.........it's restricted to being an auto mechanic. On the other hand, becoming a welder is more diversified. You can not only work in an auto body shop but also in a factory as a shop welder. So........you have more possibilities of finding a job as a welder than an auto mechanic. And, as mentioned companies are always looking for good welders, and the pay is one of the highest in a production shop. Actually, I think your question was a good one for someone of your age to ask. You picked two occupations that you have interest in, and then ask for opinions from the older people on which would be a better profession/trade to get into. That's just being smart. Doesn't mean you have to listen to what we have to say, but at least you get opinions from those who have been around longer. This way you can make a better decision. And, no matter what anyone says. The more professions or trades you train for, the more stable you'll be in the future. That way, you'll always have something different to fall back on if needed someday. Quote
pflaming Posted April 19, 2009 Report Posted April 19, 2009 I found it interesting that welding work is less physical than automechanical. I would have thought it would be the other way. An I do see signs all up and down the freeway for welders. I always liked welding because it always gave me a sense of accomplishment and I could control the quality of a weld. Sold a machine for a manufacturer. He never covered his welds, painted or powdercoated them, I asked why no bondo, his answer: "There are few things that say quality like good welds! Never hide the quality of your work!" Quote
