I was mainly looking for door garnish mouldings for my club coupe so I could have windows while I painted the other set. Struck out there-they had 2 p15 club coupes which between them had only 1 door and it was missing that piece. I did get the interior moulding and the outside stainless moulding off a d24 club coupe. I also bought the little heater ID plate for my pass side heater. That was about it. I spent a bunch of time taking a radio out of a pilot house thinking it was a 610T but it turned out to be some funky other pushbutton radio. Found a factory turn signal unit in a 41 Windsor. No puller to get it out. Dad found factory signals for his 55 IHC pickup same deal though. He got some good stuff for his 69 Sport Fury. His trunk lock is apparently from a cheaper car as it doesn't come up flush to the decorative panel on the back. Found a FuryIII with the same panel and pulled the lock. Happened to look inside and hanging from the ignition was the keys! So he lucked out there. Found a few other good 69 parts too.

Ed,

That factory turn signal switch on the '41 Windsor could be a very rare item. If the '41 Windsor is like the '41 Plymouths it had the gear shift rod on the top of the column instead of on the side where the post war models have it. The turn signal switch is therefore different if the gear shift rod is on top. The post war turn signal switches are not that common but they are available whereas I have only seen pictures of the pre-war Plymouth turn signal switches. I am using a post war turn signal switch on my '41 Plymouth but had to modify it to use it with the top of the column gear shift rod placement.

Young Ed,

Whenever I go to a junkyard I have a specific thing in mind but I can never resist snooping around, usually I'll find something else to bring home or at least for my wish list. I also like old-time hardware stores for the same reason.

Have you ever been called a pack rat? I wear that badge with honor.

Randy I would say I'm a packrat. And yes I snoop around. I looked under the hood of any mopar that could have either a hemi or a 6cyl with a 2bbl carb. I open trunks and gloveboxes looking for surprises. Thats how I happened to notice the keys in the 69 fury. Jim I believe that one was a top mounted shifter in the 41. I was just going to grab it for spare parts for my 48 unit.

Sure wish I had been smarter 30 years ago, when there were still quite

a few junkyards, and the prices were reasonable. Ah, well.

At one yard in the area, the owner said a couple guys would come in

from time to time and fill a bucket full of emblems off the hood and

trunk of all kinds of cars. Which they either then sold, or maybe added

to their collection.

So, today, I try to buy at least some things I don't really need just to

stash "in case" I ever need them. Even that is a little tough now, what

with parts already being taken and chrome pitted from exposure.

Glad you found some stuff, Ed.

Bob..those so many years ago when available and priced right is only priced to that era..by todays money market the same outflow of cash would be required in terms of buying power and as most folks were busy working 9-5 and raising a family and providing for somewhat of a retirement in the golden years...the odds of hindsight playing a big factor here is slim..and compared to now in a few years this stuff will by "trend" even be more rare and as such more costly..what you put away today may reap the same benefits..

Tim, here in the "sticks" of southwest Missouri, many salvage yards were

pretty cheap back in the day. I took a friend who also had a P15 coupe

with me one time - he found a hood, and several items he wanted (don't

recall exactly what they were, now). When we went to see the owner,

an older fellow, he charged him $25 for the whole pile. The friend was

really shocked - he was expecting to pay a lot more.

Actually, the fellow out west of town, when I bought assorted stuff

from him last, was reasonable even nowadays. But the number of

places has definitely dwindled.

Bob,

There's only one thing wrong with this type of thinking. Eventually you run out of space to stash the stuff. Then you will need to either move to a larger house, add on to the existing one, build a bigger garage or shed, or rent a storage area someplace to put your stash. Then that stash cost you extra, and you may never need the stuff. Today, I only buy what I need, when I need it now because of that.

The garage is a little crowded nowadays. But maybe this summer I will

get in the mood to re-shuffle and re-organize. There was lotsa space

in this garage when I first moved in. But between car stuff and music

stuff (like several additional amplifiers), I just make the pile a little taller.

The problem is finding a certain item I need, if it's gotten buried.

Or, ya gotta move a handful of stuff to get to something that's

behind it. It's either good or bad that I'm pretty patient and will

put up with the mess....and work around it.

Riiiight......Mike. That would indeed open up a little more floor space.

But then what would be my excuse for buying parts?

Of course, the good news is that most any of those parts will work on

this one as well.

You know Bob you bring up a good point. I've got quite the collection of spares and there was a p15 2door sedan sitting on the side of the road on the way to the junkyard.........

Ed, don't think; just do it!

OMG I've really got too many cars/trucks already. I need to get the coupe painted first and put some sort of a floor back into the 51 so I can drive it first. Plus I've got a some assembly required 40 plymouth pickup to build too

Posted

I already had a 2dr sedan p15 but I cut it up for parts. Did the same to a 4dr. Both have contributed parts to my car and other peoples cars on the forum

Yep......just get another one or two of the same model, but biz cpe, 4dr,2dr--

then you only need to look for one kind of parts. You can use those extras you have

stockpiled. You can do things to make one a bit different than the other.

Bob,

I'm probably just as patient as you are. But.........as we get older, moving all that stuff to find something just gets heavier and heavier.;) It's like my table saw in the garage. I keep it up against the wall of the garage out of the way toward the back of the garage. When I want to use it I always use to just pick it up and move it outside to keep the dust out of the garage. In bad weather I still have to move it away from the wall in the garage to use it. However, the last few years I no longer pick it up to move it. I drag it. But.........even that is getting heavier to do. So..........now I plan on putting it on wheels to roll it out when needed.:) I'll swear that thing gains weight as I get older.;) Already put the router table on wheels a couple of years ago.:)

Norm;

Not a good idea! A table saw on wheels is a finger chopper. Dont even tell me you are too smart to chop a finger. I know better and I do not want to see you with missing fingers.

Don,

That's why they make locking wheels. That said, you can buy saw tables today that are on wheels that retract. That's the type of setup I plan to add to my table. That way it sits flat on it's legs, not the wheels. The wheels are only down to move the table.

That said, I've never come close to cutting a finger tip. Maybe a fingernail, but never a tip.:D Not afraid to get close to the blade, just make sure I'm careful when doing so. I rarely use a pusher board to push anything through the saw. Usually, I'll push the board through within about 2 inches or so, then walk around to the back of the saw and pull it the rest of the way through. I have stands to support long pieces of wood. I do hold onto the backside with one hand though as I walk around the table to the back. My garage isn't OSHA approved.:D

Those wheel frames for the saw tables have been around for several years. But, after making that last post, I finally came up with a much cheaper way to do it. I'll just pick up 4 regular non locking caster wheels and a few feet of angle iron. Drill two holes at the top of the one end of the angle iron, then mount the casters to the other end of the angle iron. Mount the angle iron with the wheels to table leg with only one bolt so it swivels. Then when I want to roll the table, swing the wheels down, then lock them into the down position with a clevis pin through the second hole and to the table leg. Roll the table to where I need it, then pull the clevis pin so the table sits on its legs again. Should be able to do that for about $20 or $25, instead of $50.:) This way the table will be the same height as it was originally.
