John Mulders Posted January 5, 2007 Report Posted January 5, 2007 Bought two bolts that fitted and thought I could try this just now. Well, seems that the puller is just a fraction wider (if used on the two opposite guides) and I cannot put the second bolt as it is not straight on. So I tried the two other guides (see pic) and that was possible although the puller pin was not centered. I placed a couple of washers on the nut on the shaft and slowly worked the tool. Put it to tension and whacked it with the hammer and started turning the puller. With a little sound the nut on the shaft broke (I think the puller pin may have pushed through the washers and pressured the nut too much). So the steering wheel is not loose yet and the nut is in two pieces (I think I can get a new one though). I had the nut still on so the wire for the horn I pulled through would not get cut. Will try tomorrow again John Quote
Young Ed Posted January 5, 2007 Report Posted January 5, 2007 The nut is a common thread but normally comes about twice as thick. Atleast for the 39-47 trucks its the same nut as the one that holds the flex brake lines in place. Quote
John Mulders Posted January 6, 2007 Author Report Posted January 6, 2007 Got the steering wheel off ! added a couple of washers to prevent the pin (pointed shape) to press on the shaft. Set it all up and turned, again a bit of a sound and I thought that the pin would have penetrated the washers totally but saw the steering wheel was loose The number on the back is BH 1119622 so perhaps someone can check whether it is indeed a Dodge steeringwheel ! Thanks John Quote
RobertKB Posted January 6, 2007 Report Posted January 6, 2007 Persistence and a little ingenuity pays off. The dogs of restoration smiled on you. No, I am not dyslexic. It is meant to be dogs and not gods. Once saw a Peter Egan column in Road & Track where he started a new restoration project and said he let loose the dogs of restoration. I think we can all relate to what he meant. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted January 6, 2007 Report Posted January 6, 2007 Yes, John, that looks like a P15 steering wheel. Maybe someone has a spare nut on a parts car they could donate. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted January 6, 2007 Report Posted January 6, 2007 I remember the last Dodge steering wheel I pulled..even with the puller and the nut flush with the threads to protect all parts..the dang nut cracked in half...did not damage the shaft thank goodness. it was one of them crack like a shot and all was done deals. Quote
John Mulders Posted January 7, 2007 Author Report Posted January 7, 2007 will mail but would this nut not be easy to obtain? Seems standard size to me.. John Quote
teardrop puller Posted January 7, 2007 Report Posted January 7, 2007 I did the same thing as John did. I chased the threads and then plan on using a 3/4 in thin jam nut. kai Quote
