makkelsay Posted December 31, 2008 Report Posted December 31, 2008 ive heard that the early 318 and 340s have the same motor mounts as my flathead and that you can put a 727 on a flathead i want a floor shifter because im not a hug fan of column shifting and im thinking of building a hot rod engine and transmission from the block up and use it when the flathead finally dies and i dont feel like making custing brackets Quote
makkelsay Posted January 2, 2009 Author Report Posted January 2, 2009 So nobody has a hot rodded plymouth here? If no none knows the answers can yall point me to info and pics of hotrodded plymouths? Quote
Young Ed Posted January 2, 2009 Report Posted January 2, 2009 I doubt the early 318s and 340s have the same mounts as a flathead. The earlier V8s like the 270 hemi I had from a 55 dodge to have a very similar mount to a flathead. I did hear from one guy who combined the hemi top piece with a 6cyl bottom and mounted his engine that way. Not sure if he's quite gotten it done but Charlie on the site here was working on just such an adaptor for the auto tranny behind the flathead. Quote
laynrubber Posted January 2, 2009 Report Posted January 2, 2009 Well i have my flathead out right now and am sure that 318 340 mounts aren't even close since the flathead mounts are 2 in front and 2 on the bellhousing. Plus the streering box location doesn't make dropping a small V8.....a drop in operation. Quote
Reg Evans Posted January 2, 2009 Report Posted January 2, 2009 The trucks had a similar mount for the V8's as they did for the flat 6's from 54-59. Here's 2 photos of my 58 Sweptsides front mounts. This engine is a 315 Poly engine and in 59 they used a 318 poly. You can see the center rubber mount just under the fan pulley. Quote
makkelsay Posted January 2, 2009 Author Report Posted January 2, 2009 Well I saw a kit in an old plydo catalog I have to go to a 340 I might be doing that down the road. I just gotta find a block or running engine to use I've got a deal on a 318 with a 727 but its got stupid crazy miles haha And brakes for these cars suck I want some way of going to disk brakes in the front and different drums in the rear Quote
wayfarer Posted January 2, 2009 Report Posted January 2, 2009 The front mounts are similar between the flathead-6 and the truck v-8, but, keep in mind that if you are planning to use an A or LA series engine then you have to use an A series water pump assembly. The earlier front mount/water pump assembly from a 315 or 325 Dodge for example, will not bolt to the A or LA block without a milling mchine on hand. What car are you working with ? If you choose to keep the inline and change to a newer trans send a PM, we have the adapter on the shelf for either the 904-A500 or the manual smallblock bellhousing. . Quote
Reg Evans Posted January 2, 2009 Report Posted January 2, 2009 Wayfarer, I've been looking for this water pump you mention so I can use a 57 Plymouth 318 poly engine in a similar vintage truck. Know anyone that would have one for sale? Thanks, Reg Quote
wayfarer Posted January 2, 2009 Report Posted January 2, 2009 No doubt the guys over at Vintage Power Wagons are hoarding some, and be sure to ask on the forum at: www.powerwagonadvertiser.com You might also check with Ed Yost at Wildcat Auto Wrecking at www.wildcatmopars.com This is a pre-80 Mopar only yard. makkelsay Posted January 3, 2009 Author Report Posted January 3, 2009 I'm working with a 52 cambridge sedan So its got the 218 If I could fit a 340 and 727 that'd be awesome but I'd settle for a 318 I mean if I'm gonna change the trans might as well change the engine The engine change will come later Mainly cause the flathead and trans run good for now I need to get it to stop first Quote
Andydodge Posted January 3, 2009 Report Posted January 3, 2009 I have had a 318 Poly in my 1940 Dodge for over 30 yrs, good engine BUT parts are getting hard to find, expensive and unless you absolutely MUST have a 318 Poly then I'd get a LA series 318/340/360.....parts cheaper, the Late A sreies engine is physically smaller, parts cheaper, good range of speed equipement still available and plentiful, parts cheaper...........did I mention parts are cheaper.......lol.......serously tho' the LA series is a much better bet in my opinion.......andyd Quote
RobertKB Posted January 3, 2009 Report Posted January 3, 2009 And brakes for these cars suck Actually the factory brakes work quite well if adjusted properly. Go to Technical Tips and it tells you how to do it. I have three old Mopars with drum brakes and they stop just fine. Quote
makkelsay Posted January 3, 2009 Author Report Posted January 3, 2009 Well my rear driver brake is bad The wheel cylinder is blown and the shoe might be a hair warped All the other brakes just need adjusting Ill actually be running just 3 brakes tomorrow because I'm blocking the rear driver off..not the greatest thing to do but I don't have the money fora new wheel cylinder and I've driven far worse haha I'm gonna start looking into a 340 because parts are easier to get as far as speed enhancers Sfupid fuel system needs flushing bad...there's sludge all in it...looks like ill be seafoaming it aswell Quote
