48Chrashler Posted November 1, 2008 Report Posted November 1, 2008 Ready for this task but I do not want to constantly trip over it for until the front end is rebuilt. Has anyone build and/or seen plans for a cradle to fit the flattie with wheels to slide it around the shop. I can weld or use wood. I remember Don C has his neighbor lift it on to the workbench but my neighbor is not a world class body builder! Saw a plan way back when but cannot locate it. Thanks for any help. JC Quote
oldmopar Posted November 1, 2008 Report Posted November 1, 2008 I have a easwood engine dolly works well but I think over price. I bought mine a few years ago But you should be able to make it for a lot less basically some square tube wheels and a few bolts http://www.eastwoodco.com/jump.jsp?itemID=14916&itemType=PRODUCT Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted November 1, 2008 Report Posted November 1, 2008 Here is a pic of a couple engine dollies- a 230 on one and a chrysler 8 on the other. I welded em up out of 3" channel. Bob Quote
greg g Posted November 2, 2008 Report Posted November 2, 2008 I have a set of those cheapie car dollies from HF. I have my 218 sitting on one with a couple of 2 x 4 to steady it a ratchet hold down strap to keep it steady. Have my 1098 AH engine strapped down to another one. I think I got them on sale for 30 bucks a pair. The steel caster wheels are chincy but they work OK for the money. Quote
hkestes41 Posted November 2, 2008 Report Posted November 2, 2008 I just used 2X6's, 2X4's, Nails, lag bolts and casters from Home Depot to build one to transport an engine and trans from Denver to Dallas. Once it was home have used it to roll the new engine/trans around. Now the old engine/trans is setting on it. Used the 2X6's for the perimiter and 2X4's for cross bracing and then cut triangles from the 2X4's to double as corner bracing and a mounting point for the casters. Quote
steveplym Posted November 3, 2008 Report Posted November 3, 2008 I used a wooden pallet, cut it in half, and screwed the pieces together. Cut a hole in the center to fit the motor and put casters on the bottom. I can move it around the garage as needed with the casters. Quote
PatS.... Posted November 3, 2008 Report Posted November 3, 2008 Simple and cheap from Princess Auto, likely available at other outlets as well, $35 on sale, reg is $55 I think. Black uprights slide along the crossmember to the width of the oil pan lip. The right hand crossmember had to be moved left to fit the flattie. edit...much the same as the Eastwood model oldmopar posted the link to only cheaper. Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted November 3, 2008 Report Posted November 3, 2008 Here is a better closeup of the 230 flathead 6 engine storage dollie. Made for tight space storage of all my old rebuildable 6cyl/8 inline engines. Dollies are made very compact to save shop space. Bob Quote
Don Coatney Posted November 4, 2008 Report Posted November 4, 2008 Jerry; If I recall you gave me plans for a "live" stand when you paid me a visit a few years back. I did not use your plans exactly but I did use the idea and built a stand so I could test run my engine prior to install. I did not put wheels under my stand but it would be easy to do. As long as you are building a stand make it a live stand. If you listen closley you can hear my engine running in the second picture. Quote
pflaming Posted November 5, 2008 Report Posted November 5, 2008 With the engine on those 4 x 4's, were they stable enough to start the engine? Quote
