40phil41 Posted October 24, 2008 Report Posted October 24, 2008 Well, I finally got back to my '64 tempest. The engine and tranny are out. I used a lifting plate the same as Rodney did with his Studebaker. I just had to drill a set of 4 holes to match my intake. The engine and tranny came out together but even with the front clip removed from the car there wasn't much clearance due to the starter on one side and oil filter on the other. These will be left off for the re-install. The three legged engine stand I have is crap! Not even close to being up to carrying the weight of my engine. The engine sags considerably and does not feel secure at all. I am looking around for something better. In the meantime the engine hoist is being used as extra support with the stand. Greg, the race is on :) . The tear down begins this weekend. Phil Quote
greg g Posted October 24, 2008 Report Posted October 24, 2008 Just yesterday picked up some sheet metal for the floor reconstruction of my truck. Tick Tick Tick!!! Quote
Rodney Bullock Posted October 25, 2008 Report Posted October 25, 2008 Hey Phil, I love it, Man you got that thing up and out. I like the way you did it. I built a 66 lemans for my best friend and did it the same way you are doing it. He had the 326 and PG he did not want it to go back in so I found him a 400 with a pontiac 350 automatic. He put headers on it and it's a little loud. I like it. He doesen't drive it much and I think it sat all summer. The car is bulletproof however he will not drive it unless we are cruzing someplace together. He is mad with me right now because I am hurt and I can't run to his aid evertime the car needs some oil or antifreeze:confused: life goes on. I wish I was there for the tear down. That is the part I like the most. This will take you no time. Enjoy:) Please...keep the pic's coming. I have to live vicuriously though you now:D Quote
hucks 50 Posted October 25, 2008 Report Posted October 25, 2008 reposition the motor on the stand ,might not be in the correct holes Quote
55 Fargo Posted October 25, 2008 Report Posted October 25, 2008 Looks good Phil, maybe go to Princess Auto and get the 2000 lb engine stand...........Fred Quote
40phil41 Posted October 26, 2008 Author Report Posted October 26, 2008 Looks good Phil, maybe go to Princess Auto and get the 2000 lb engine stand...........Fred Fred, Good suggestion. My engine hoist came from Princess Auto but not the stand. I looked it up in the Princess Auto catalogue the 2000 Ib. stand looks like just the ticket. I'll be off to Princess Auto at the beginning of the week. Thanks, Phil Quote

I think that the engine build will be more fun than repairing all of the floor and trunk rust. But I will persevere. I just love the style of this car. You were my inspiration when I was about 6 months behind your Plymouth with my '40. I suspect you may have another build or two ahead of you. Once you start it is hard to stop Phil Quote
Rodney Bullock Posted October 26, 2008 Report Posted October 26, 2008 Oh no Phil, I am going to watch you do your car. I don't have another car in me right now:) I drove the Hawk this morning and it was flawless, that makes me very happy as I am so tied. I just dig it when you tear into a fresh project and you got your plan in your head. I was looking at this 1956 Buick on the side of the road last month and thought "wow wou;d make a great cruzer" Then I got out of the car and tried to walk over I started limping and got back in the car. The pontiac has great lines and the front end is nice and stiff remember Deloren had alot to do with that car. It's a great car. I have driven one and after the restoration was complete I missed it. The dash is the onlything I did not master I got a pad for the dash top however it never fitted perfect. If I can find some pic's I will put them up. have a great time. Quote
Rodney Bullock Posted October 26, 2008 Report Posted October 26, 2008 Phil, this is when the pontiac was almost finished the other pic's are actually on a computer that is gone by the waist side. These are from the both back to my country garage. It funny because now with the additin of the new garage I find it hard to believe I built cars in that thing and in the winter. This will be the first fall/winter that I will not have a project going on. I know it will feel strange. Quote
Rodney Bullock Posted October 26, 2008 Report Posted October 26, 2008 The finished product, This car was such an easy project because pontiac parts are as plentiful as leaves in my yard. I guess now I have time to rack that stuff. Quote
Don Coatney Posted October 26, 2008 Report Posted October 26, 2008 Then I got out of the car and tried to walk over I started limping and got back in the car. Rodney; I understand. My wife thought I might get a bit promiscuous while on the road so she put a pebble in my shoe and it made me limp. Quote
40phil41 Posted October 26, 2008 Author Report Posted October 26, 2008 Rodney, Thanks for the photos. I need all of the inspiration that I can get. Phil Quote

40phil41 Posted October 29, 2008 Author Report Posted October 29, 2008 Well here's my new 2000 lb. engine stand that Fred had suggested. It came from Princess Auto which is a Canadian chain of Farm/Auto stores based out of Winnipeg Manitoba. The only store in Southern Ontario that had this stand was in London, Ontario. So this morning we travelled the 90 miles to get it. Leaving Burlington it was 34F with a clear blue sky. London on the other hand had received an overnight snowfall and was a winter wonderland. The things we do for our cars The stand works great and is very stable with my 326 c.i. Poncho engine. The only problem I had was in transferring the engine from my hoist to the stand since the legs interfere with each other. Some creative transferring was required. Quote
RobertKB Posted October 29, 2008 Report Posted October 29, 2008 I hate to ask but will anyway. What is the stand worth? I have a Princess Auto in Lethbridge and might be interested or maybe wait until it comes on sale....if it ever does but I usually always look through their flier. Quote

I just couldn't wait for a sale Phil Quote
RobertKB Posted October 30, 2008 Report Posted October 30, 2008 Thanks. That's a pretty decent price. I will have to look into it. Quote
