MacGyver Posted October 8, 2008 Report Posted October 8, 2008 Just wanted to share this with the gang. I had the benefit of growing up on a lake in SE WI so we've always had a lot of neat old boat stuff lying around. My father retired a few years ago and last year moved up to the north woods of WI. When he did he handed me a box of "old boat junk" and then said "there's a tach in there that might look cool in your Dodge." I just stored the stuff away until I could get to it. Well, that time came and he was right. I like the looks and I'm going to try and get this thing working again. I'll let ya'll know how it goes... Quote
rearview Posted October 9, 2008 Report Posted October 9, 2008 Cool. I saw an identical one at the swap meet at Great Lakes this summer... didn't pick it up because it was only labelled 12v. Quote
Uncle-Pekka Posted October 9, 2008 Report Posted October 9, 2008 Is this boat tacho 6V device? What about 6V tacho's in general? - I suppose they are hard to find? I cannot really recall ever having seen one... Quote
Jim Yergin Posted October 9, 2008 Report Posted October 9, 2008 I have a 6 volt Sun tach in my car. I found it on eBay. Jim Yergin Quote
MacGyver Posted October 9, 2008 Author Report Posted October 9, 2008 Is this boat tacho 6V device?... The label on the back of this one reads, "...For capacitor discharge ignition with breaker points OR 12volt battery ignition..." Quote
Young Ed Posted October 9, 2008 Report Posted October 9, 2008 My freebie 51 had one of those ignition systems on it. Are they good for anything? Quote
busycoupe Posted October 11, 2008 Report Posted October 11, 2008 I've used a 12 volt sears dwell tach on my car with some success. I think the critical thing is not the voltage, but the number of cylinders. The tach has to be set up for 6 cylinders so that the number of pulses will be calibrated to the correct RPM. I could be wrong about the voltage requirement, but I'm pretty sure that the tach is specific for a number of cylinders. I had an old boat with an old tach. The old tach was for a four cylinder Evinrude and it would not work with my new 3 cylinder Tohatsu. Quote
Frank Elder Posted October 12, 2008 Report Posted October 12, 2008 IF you are determined to use this tach, which is way cool, buy a 6-volt tach and use the guts in your tach. Probably easier said than done I suppose. Quote
Normspeed Posted October 12, 2008 Report Posted October 12, 2008 There's a place online that will convert your old tach to 6v +ground but they're a little pricey. Here's an old boat tach nesting in a chrome 4 wheel drive hub cover. I've never got it to work, but it sure looked cool clamped to the side of my steering column for a while. Quote
