68fastwilliams Posted August 26, 2008 Report Posted August 26, 2008 Does a P15 use two battery trays? A large lower tray and a smaller upper tray that the battery fits snugly inside of? Thanks for your help. Quote
eric wissing Posted August 26, 2008 Report Posted August 26, 2008 There is a lower tray that the battery rests on. There is a rectangular frame that slides over the battery and two upright bolts to hold the battery in place. Eric Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted August 26, 2008 Report Posted August 26, 2008 are you referring to the phenolic battery tray liner with the hole and rubber drain attached? Quote
Ed Griffin Posted August 26, 2008 Report Posted August 26, 2008 are you referring to the phenolic battery tray liner with the hole and rubber drain attached? I had to look that one up Phenolic resin can include any of various synthetic thermosetting resins such as Bakelite, obtained by the reaction of phenols with simple aldehydes and used to make molded products, including pool and snooker balls, and as coatings and adhesives. See phenol formaldehyde resin for a fuller discussion of the chemistry. The properties of phenolic materials make them very well suited to myriad industrial applications. Phenolics are the result of polymerization between resin and a base material that can be paper, glass or cotton. The base material used is dependent upon the intended application of the finished product. Paper phenolics are used in the manufacturing of electrical components such as punch-through boards and house hold Laminates. Glass phenolics are particularly well suited for use in the high speed bearing market. Bakelite is made from phenolic resin Richlite is made from phenolic resin and paper. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted August 26, 2008 Report Posted August 26, 2008 don't grind or saw that stuff without running water over the material at the same time..the dust is very very bad for your bod...learned this in shipboard electrical distribution boxes and panels..best insulator around.. Quote
68fastwilliams Posted August 26, 2008 Author Report Posted August 26, 2008 I ordered a tray from a guy online. The tray on the left is the on I ordered. The tray on the right is the one from the car. I sent him an e-mail after I received it and got this reply. Hi again I have a AACA 1st,junior,and 1st.senior. Plymouth club best of show, and grand national winner 1948 Plymouth Special Deluxe Club Coupe and these trays fit perfectly on top of the lower tray. The picture you sent appears to have a large lip on one side and i have never seen one like this on the hundreds of P15`s i have looked at and judged. It appears maybe your was changed sometime in its life. The tray i sold you is designed to fit the group 1 batteries used on all P15`s. Good Luck Below is a pic of a '48 Desoto that I took at a recent show. So the question is should I use both, one on top of the other? Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted August 26, 2008 Report Posted August 26, 2008 The aluminum one on the right appears very much like the P17 through P23 Plymouth..have a number of these Quote
68fastwilliams Posted August 26, 2008 Author Report Posted August 26, 2008 I did several searches here and the aluminum tray that I have is the only one I saw on this site. Is it not right for the car? Quote
eric wissing Posted August 26, 2008 Report Posted August 26, 2008 I would use both. The smaller one will keep the battery from moving around. The picture shows the top frame I was talking about. Eric Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted August 26, 2008 Report Posted August 26, 2008 I don't recall etiher of my P15's with an aluminum tray...however I must confess I have not gotten deep into them yet either..to say one way or the other may mislead someone..I can attest to the aluminum one is the later cars though.. Quote
68fastwilliams Posted August 26, 2008 Author Report Posted August 26, 2008 Thanks Eric, I have the frame like the one pictured. Quote
68fastwilliams Posted August 26, 2008 Author Report Posted August 26, 2008 Well could the fact that the car is a '48 explain that it has this type of aluminum tray? Quote
Ed Griffin Posted August 26, 2008 Report Posted August 26, 2008 The aluminum tray on the right is the same as the one in my Dodge too. I dont have the top frame but that doesnt suprise me. May have to check the other two and see what those trays look like because I think one was rusted. Like you Tim I hadn't looked at those in awhile. Quote
oldmopar Posted August 26, 2008 Report Posted August 26, 2008 This is from the P15 Parts manual Quote
68fastwilliams Posted August 26, 2008 Author Report Posted August 26, 2008 What year manual is that pic from? Quote
greg g Posted August 26, 2008 Report Posted August 26, 2008 I have a shelf and a tray. Here's what I think. Chyrslers Desotos, and Dodges used a group 2 6V battery which is larger and taller. Plymouths use a Group 1 battery. I believe Plymouths use the battery tray to take up the difference in height between the Group 1 and the group2 and alloy the use of the same under tray and mounting paraphanalia across the brands. Just my theory. I do wounder though about the trapazoidal shaped battery shown inthe 47 manual. I don't believe I have ever seen one of those. Quote
Frank Elder Posted August 26, 2008 Report Posted August 26, 2008 MY 47 dodge cc came with the smaller black tray and tie down, and the 48 4-dr. sedan came with the aluminum highbacked tray. Both of these cars purchased from original owner's familys. Tim,you salty dog! I knew you were in ship's company. Reville Reville Drop your ..... and grab your ..... it's time to go to work! Quote
oldmopar Posted August 26, 2008 Report Posted August 26, 2008 I do wounder though about the trapazoidal shaped battery shown inthe 47 manual. I don't believe I have ever seen one of those. The battery is a rectangle the picture just came out a little distorted Ed Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted August 26, 2008 Report Posted August 26, 2008 It does appear to use two things. The larger one and the smaller rectangular one both. Mine is original, far as I know. Not in the greatest of condition....but it's under the battery anyway. It doesn't feel like my larger tray is aluminum....just seems like regular metal. Has that notch on the front edge to hold the "L" shaped end of the battery hold down. Also has a drain hole in the left front corner...it goes thru both pieces. I think the original battery hold down part was made like this one, with loops on the sides in the proper places to correspond with the hold down bolts. Or------it had a little hook item to join the hold down to the frame....can't recall which. This frame is too long ......got it with some other stuff......but generally made like the orig Plym frame, I think. Quote
68fastwilliams Posted August 27, 2008 Author Report Posted August 27, 2008 Thanks guys, I think I will use both trays. The car is a '48 vert and is a former AACA Junior and Senior winner and as far as I know the aluminum tray that I posted is original to the vehicle. But I have been told that the tray should have a flat front like the Desoto pic that I posted. So I guess it will be a bit of a hodgepodge. Quote
