When I bought my 49 I named the car Magoo.

When I thought it was finished we started calling it My Way.

Today it is officially renamed CHRISTINE, the Plymouth from Hell.

I joked that the only things that have not been done twice were the electric clock restoration and the Overdrive Transmission I had built by Idaho Transmission Warehouse in Idaho Falls Idaho for the small price of $1393.00 on 9/25/03...when the first shop "had to have it now".

Well I would not be this pissed about the clock, the transmission lasted 86 miles.

I got the 2nd gear set from George Asche and sent it out to them, which is just a data point.

Anyhow on July 13th I drove to the show at the Endicott Estate in Dedham. I had troubles going from first to second and the guys at Xtreme said they knew and would take care of it with the rest of the punch list. It got a bit worse on the way back to the shop.

Well they replaced some ball in the shift something, I am not well versed in the manual transmission world, rebuilt the clutch as that was slipping, and put it back in the car. In the interim we needed to send the distributor back to Langdon to get rid of the wobble so the car could not be test driven.

This week, getting the carbs working well with the distributor back, the transmission started popping out of gear. Next it started making horrible banging sounds in reverse.

So that transmission came out, a spare from a bone yard is now in so I can at least drive, while the guys at Xtreme are rebuilding mine.

Some shaft that ITW needed to machine for the 2nd gear install was trash.

The car from hell guys, the car from hell.

Again, thank you...I now feel somewhat better and my wife does not have to listen to me P and M.

Oh, the warranty: 1 year or 12,000 miles. No warranty since 9/24/05.

Let this be a lesson to not buy anything until a week after you absolutely need it :D

Howard,

I give you lots of credit for determination. Most folks would have bailed out of the project a long time ago.

Maybe you should post a list of vendors for us to avoid.....sort of a Mobil Travel Guide for Plymouth restorers.

Ah the proverbial money pit! Sounds kind of like us all in some ways. Well good luck with your new transmission and maybe the gods will be with you after this problem is relieved.

I think it's great you have stuck with it this far...I think your patience will be nicely rewarded when the bugs are ironed out.

It's a beautiful car and will be worth the aggravation.

Howard, I agree with Pat...its a beautiful car and worth the aggravation. That's easy for me to say not having to foot the bill or the pain but its one great lookin' car .... with a few bugs. Well, in total maybe more than a few.

Work the bugs out and its one great lookin' car .... sans bugs.

chrysler themselves only gave a limited warranty and i mean LIMITED in the early days..... you'd have been hard-pressed to get the dealer to fix anything even on a brand new car in the 50's.

It's still a beauty. Sad about the tranny. Glad you had a spare to pop in there for now. Under similar circumstances, MikeMaker of the forum loaned me a freshly rebuilt 3 speed. I still had to get under there and swap them but I could still enjoy the car.

PS, ARGH )(&_$^& Car!... You know, I've used those exact terms to describe my p24 on occasion!
