  1. My generator on my '42 was noisy when I first got it. The previous owner only used the vehicle sparingly over many years. I added oil to the oilers and it didn't seem to make much difference at first, but I kept adding a few drops every month or so, and now she is nice and quiet. It has always charged correctly.
  2. If you have an older 3 speed transmission with floor shifter, the top plate will bolt on top of your '51 trans just fine and shift perfectly. Thats what I am using on my '51. The hard part is finding one.
  3. The simplest way is to take the top off the older style transmission and bolt it onto your existing transmission. The '41 to '48 have a shorter input shaft than your series of transmission.
  4. Just cut a hole in the original floor pan for the new shifter.
  5. The 3 speed floor shifter from the '41 to '49 3 speed trucks fit on your '51 and work fine. You just have to make a bracket to hold your later model parking brake cable.
  6. My '42 Fargo at 6'2" I have to tilt my head to see farther down the road, or I can sit straight up and drive like my wife and not be concerned what is happening more than 25 feet down the road.? NIce thing about the design is you do not miss the sun visors, that are not installed, on sunny days.
  7. Yes, your later distributor should fit your truck and probably the later carb. The distributor on my '42 Fargo developed a faulty vacuum diaphram. I switched to a later 50's industrial with no advance and it ran fine, I purchased a '56 rolling half ton and am now running that distributor with advance on my '42. The carb should fit fine as only my '38 sedan has a smaller intake to fit its Stromberg carb. Worst case is would swap the intake manifold. People forget that all Chrysler sixes and Desoto engines are 25" blocks and a good source for parts.
  8. Can you start the car in second and shift to third?
  9. Pulling shift lever towards you and up is reverse, towards you and down is first, at rest and up is second and at rest and down is direct or 3rd. Maybe someone has reversed how the linkage is hooked up?
  10. Duplicolor cast aluminum engine paint
  11. Mikes Carburetor has kits. They used to have an Alberta branch, but not so sure now. In Washington State. https://www.carburetor-parts.com/bb-k4060.html
  12. Can you shift into reverse when the engine is not running? If you can maybe there is not enought clutch clearance on release. If that is not the case try lubing all the pivot points on the linkage and check for extra slop due to wear or missing bushings.
  13. 1/4 throttle on hot starts works for me as well. Heat sheild under carb and over fuel pump might assist and ensuring fuel line is routed as far away from exhaust manifod as possible can help as well. I also have jammed open the heat riser valve on both my trucks.
  14. My crank had seized, but it was the pin holding the crank teeth had come out and the gear was jammed, so you might want to check that. 2 people might be able to detach upper mounts allowing better angle for the lower screws on the crank band.
  15. That is a 3 speed tranny. The top lever allows you shift the side lever between reverse and 1st, then release and lever shifts between 2nd and direct (3rd).
  16. Is your transmission a 3 speed floor shift with the floor handbrake lever? If so then it is probably the original truck transmission with a car engine. The last year for floor shifter in a car was 1938 and they are completly different than the truck trans.
  17. If you have fluld drive I think you will have to disassemble. If a regular clutch I would try the Cadillac trick.
  18. You will use the bell housing and clutch from the 1940 Dodge, so there is no issue. The mid 50's bell housing mount on a frame cross member and are a different shape.
  19. Fits and works fine. My '51 was a column shift and has been converted to a floor shift by adding an early model top shifter.
  20. Your shifter will fit on this transmission and in your truck, if you need a transmission. Assuming your truck is a 3 speed
  21. The only fuse on that era of truck will be on the rear of the light switch. My 42 is an original reproduction wiring harness. On my 52 it had been converted to 12 volts so I refreshed the harness by using a lot of information http://dodgepilothouseclub.org/know/wiring_harness/wiring.htm Basically the same as a 40
  22. I put 215-75 R15 on my 1942 Fargo. I think they were about a half inch shorter than the bias ply would have been. In regards to speedometer accuracy I mark the speedo face for 30,40 and 50 MPH with a magic marker dot, according to a gps reading. I have radials mounted on 3 of my historic vehicles and the rims hold air very well, without tubes.
  23. If you are keeping your truck fairly original and only cruising at 50, the original brakes work pretty good.
  24. Those are the parts I got for my '42 last year from Rock Auto. Front and back, fit and work fine
  25. Here is the home made floor board out of my '42. Metal strips screwed in on the bottom to hold the battery cover. The outside underneath three edges curved to fit flush with the floor. I covered the shifter ahd parking brake holes with inner tube glued down.
