  1. I haven't tried a lot of different products but, Marvel Mystery Oil did make a difference for me. I have a lot of Bon-Ami left over if you want some.
  2. I think vin tags without the car is a federal thing. I have asked repeatedly about selling titles and I have never gotten a definitive answer.
  3. I haven't seen one of those for a long time. We had one in a 54 Pontiac and it worked perfectly. There was a solenoid on top of it that changed the cell connections from parallel to series only for starting. Very neat gadget.
  4. Humpey's or The Mining Company. Not family owned, but really good food. I really need to get back up there.
  5. Alaska48, look for a place at 1033 east 5th ave. called the Lucky Wishbone. It's been family owned since the late 40's I think . If you're a pilot, you can sit at the counter. Excellent hamburgers and strawberry shortcake!
  6. My neighbor has a funeral home, should I have him contact you? or is it too late?
  7. I was about 15 when that happened to me. the 1/2" pipe fitting for the windshield wipers had gotten out. It took all day to figure out what was wrong.
  8. Pat and Don, thanks for thinking of me and wanting to help. I spent a day or sofeeling sorry for myself and then got over it. After studying the parts, it seems the long bar is not involved in the clamping force, but mostly to keep the jaw from rotating. So, you can see where this is going. I have cross-drilled the end of the bar and the jaw where they meet. I am cutting and drilling quarter inch plates to bolt to each side. I know it will never be as strong as it was, but at least I will get some use out of it. Some day I will learn to go easy on stuff. The bench looks naked without it. Thanks again
  9. No problem with wind resistance, eh Bob?
  10. I don't care for chopping tops at all. Wait a minute, thats really sharp. OK, I changed my mind, at least one chopped top looks pretty darn cool. Thats gonna be a nice looking ride.
  11. 80-90 wt in mine too.
  12. I recall as a kid, the oldtimers would put a stick between the pedal and the seat to keep pressure on the brake system when they were not using the car for a long period of time. I guess the idea being the cups in the wheel cylinders will seal tighter and thus avoid leaks. It's taken me a while, but I am not as quick to argue with oldtimers as I used to be. There is good logic there. Just remember to take off a battery cable, or unplug the switch. Yse, I know, now I am the old timer. HEY, you kids, get offa my lawn !
  13. Today I went out to remove the remains. Got to looking and thinking. You're right, I shouldn't give up without trying. I will look into getting it worked on, and yes, there are major flea markets around to keep me busy in the mean time. Any vise I use hase to have tose magic words on it; Made in USA. According to the googler thing here, it seems Charles Parker went out of business in 1957. Now I gotta save it.
  14. I just don't think I could trust a repaired vise because I probably didn't learn anything from this little disaster. I really do appreciate all your comments, you are all very kind and helpful. I'm gonna take off now, before I feel a virtual group hug, and I'm just not into that. Hmmmm, gotta go look at new tools,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
  15. 205R-70 15's at 33 psi. all around. Excellent ride, no wear.
  16. I got all three at an antique shop near 4th and G st. in Anchorage AK. $1.00 each. Couldn't believe they had Indiana, so I got one of each they had.
  17. The vise was a sort of a family vise, since my Dad got it from the metallurgy lab at US Steel. No, it didn't come in a box. He gave it to me because he couldn't get it out of the spare tire well of his 60 Olds wagon. Charles Parker brand, Meridian Conn. I musta pushed a hundred u-joints with it. Best vise I ever saw. Really gonna miss it.
  18. Did you notice that our cars are twins? I used to visit Eagle River several times a year from about 2000 to 2005, and two of my grandchildren were born in Anchorage. Contact the antique mushers club, they have some nice cars there. I miss visiting Anc.
  19. One way to avoid this damage: Do not put a 5' long piece of 2" pipe on the handle and tighten until you hear a big bang. Yes, I know. I asked for it. I still can't believe I did that. Whadda dope.
  20. Alaska48, is Mr Whitekeys FlyByNight club still open over in Spenard? Boy would I love a nice Spam dinner there. If you haven't done it, you will love it. Don't miss the "Spamtones".
  21. I have had this since 1966. Today I was being unusually stupid and this is what it cost me. I cannot replace it. My stupidity amazes me.
  22. Don't mention the Bon-ami. I did once, but I think I got away with it. I'm betting that old flat head will come to life on the first attempt. Six years isn't a long time to sit. Their durability will impress you.
  23. The first is a Packard and the second a Ford.
  24. Tubes make radials run hotter. Most inner tubes will say on the "not for use in radial tires". There are inner tubes made that say "for use in radial tires". I have been using 205-70 radials on my P-15 for several years with excellent performance. The oval stem holes do require a bolt through stem, but they are common on bigger truck tires. Nothing hokey about them. The ones I have use a rubber washer on both sides of the wheel that seals them perfectly. I think, also, that radials tires without tubes are easier to balance, not to mention much easier to mount and dismount. Did'ja ever pinch a tube with your tire iron? Or am I showing my age again?
  25. I think they use Marvel Mystery Hay.
