Barry, good info but I think the US Dodges extra wheelbase length was in the body shell, my "plymouth" body has a definate dogleg in front of the rear fender, where the door trailing edge/hinge edge meets the fender, however I have seen pics of US Dodges and they have an almost straight, vertical "dogleg" and appear to have much longer rear door windows, almost a straight edge in the upper window opening in the rear door window, whereas my "Plymouth" rear door has a shorter upper edge......see attached pic........andyd

Wish I still lived in Sydney.........thats an interesting car......it appears to have a US, Fulton type sun visor, which is VERY uncommon, if not rare in Oz......also while it appears to be a rust bucket there lots of trim & other bits, the spare engine looks like its from a truck going by the bellhousing mounts BUT notice the driveshaft in the pic.....it has the normal uni joint/sliding coupling....not the mongrel ball & trunion thing........now who do I know who can hold this thing for me?........lol....andyd.

The best the factory got for the 230 was 140hp from 57-59 and that was with 8:1 compression and I think a 2 barrel carb........so I am hoping that with my 230 with an 9.5:1 Edgy Finned head, twin carbs, split exhaust, balanced, S10 HEI dissy, low restriction mufflers, engine driven fan removal, lightened flywheel, minor intake/exhaust porting, me leaning forward when driving and a good 50knot tailwind that I may, hopefully see the high side of 170-180.......maybe.......lol........andy(the optimist)d

I have Wheel Vintique 15x6 and 15x7 Chromies front and rear, the front end is stock 1941 Plymouth with not quite 1 full coil cut from the front springs, standard spindle, stub axle etc, the rear end has 2" steel lowering blocks the front tyres are 195/75x15 the rears are 235/75x15, both are Coker Classic Radials, I am using the original Plymouth wheel bolts on these rims, I have cut the locating lug off the drum face and also hit each protruding rivet head on the drum face with an angle grinder to reduce their height to 1/3rd their original height which is plenty anyway as the wheels bolts actually screw into the hub which is behind the drum anyway so removal of the rivets would not effect the holding on capacity, but I left some of the rivet head to stop the back of the rivets falling into the brake and jamming up...........andyd

Phil, many thanks for posting that pic of the two different versions........its amazing the subtle differences and with mine being a D15D, which from what I've seen in a local sales brochure is the D15 DeLuxe........as my car came with twin tailights, twin wipers, door and rear seat armrest, front bumper overiders..........but its interesting comparing the 3 front treatments, ie, my 40 Dodge trim on the basic Plymouth front, the Canadian version of my car but with the USA style bumper and then the all singing, genuine USA Version with the proper headlight surround etc.......don't suppose you have a rear picture of these two cars?........lol...............thanks again........and btw Don, thanks........lol........andyd

Coolant system - humid tropics - recommendations?
Andydodge replied to boxer_inv's topic in P15-D24 Forum
Rob, soluable oil is supposed to be helpful/required in the older coolant systems as the SO apparently helps the water pump bearings........eventually when I get the 230 six in the P11 I intend to delete the fan and run an electric fan on the front of the radiator, I have a 180degree thermostat as suggested by our elders(lol) in it at present and with the stock radiator and engine driven fan the 201 runs at 180-190 all day, I'm in Grafton, temperate zone I suppose.........andyd -
Water leak from block - Lots of questions - Help!?
Andydodge replied to boxer_inv's topic in P15-D24 Forum
Rob, good to hear it worked out o/k.......what other cooling issues do you have?.....andyd -
Heres a couple of pics of my mocked up 230 engine thats going in the 1941 Plymouth Coupe......have had the exhaust manifold split by a local blacksmith, did a great job, the carbies are Australian single barrel Strombergs from late 60's -late 70's GM Holden 186/202 six cylinder engines, same with the alloy water pump......the water pump adaptor came with the engine when I picked it up.....the engine is a 230 Chrysler Industrial Engine, supposedly from an airport tug that worked Sydney International Airport........most engine parts have been slowly collected via ebay, including 20thou over pistons, valves, springs, oil pump, timing chain, cam bearings........engine is slated for hot tanking then bore, crank work, etc soon........andyd

Tim, Dennis, Ralph & Charlie thanks for the comments and Frankie......nnnooo..............lol........my head hurts............lol.......and thanks for the info Phil, I had always thought that the brass grilles were "cottage industry" Australian thought I must admit they were/are very good.......one more thing Phil, there is a horizontal bar that I've seen on the occaisonal 1940 US Dodge, between the upper and lower grille pieces, it looks like a chrome bar and sticks out a little at each side..........have you ever seen what I am trying to explain?........lol.......thanks again, andyd

Funny thing was I had lusted after a 40/41 coupe for yrs also, with the web I had seen a few good ones go for $10-15,000 US but after you added $3,000 shipping, plus the Oz exchange rate they became $18-25,000 Australian, plus LHD and it a long way to swim if I wasn't happy & had to dicuss someone parentage if it wasn't as listed..........and I didn't have the money anyway........lol.......so.....but was going thru a local car mag Feb 2007 and saw this car listed, no price, but described as on vintage car rego, rhd, good cond, etc and the pic looked good.......thought for a laugh I'd call, expected a price of $30,000........the old guy said that as it was a manual, non power brakes and that he had an Oz mid 50's 4dr sedan that had power brakes & was an auto, then the 41 Coupe got the short straw, at 75yrs of age the auto was n easier car to drive for him........and he wanted $22,000........my next call was to my new best friend......the bank manager........."please Sir, can I have some more?".......lol.......ended up getting the car for $21,000, plus $1,800.00 shipping from the other side of Oz, car is an older restoration, good driver paint job, trim, chrome etc as pictured, it had an old, but good set of 6.00x16 whitewalls, various oil/water leaks but basically a good car........I am a VERY HAPPY CAMPER.........have had to tidy up a few things and next on the adgenda is the rewire the complete car, then rebuild the 230 engine(car has the original 201) I have and put it & a T5 in to make it more useable.......andyd

Frankie...........howdya do that?.......lol........don't tell me....had enough problems trying to do normal pics....lol.........bob, theres a heap of coupe pics also on the forum........I was on a roll last night......and Phil......why would they have done aftermarket grille's?.......theres a guy with an ex USA 40 Dodge here in Oz, I have only seen pics but he told me the grille was diecast, also with the USA large one piece front sheetmetal he said that the diecast grille fits into the opening and then small bolts are inserted from the front to hold it in place as there is no way you could access the rear of the grille......which is how the Oz brass grille is held in, you gain access from above via the long opening because of the Plymouth hood allows access in front of the radiator........andyd

Check out a housing from any small block mopar V8, depending on whether you need the housing that has space for the thermostat to sit inside or not.....the mid 50's Mopar V8's had a housing that had the same bolt pattern as the side valve six and was cast iron, the 60's era V8's used an alloy housing, with the same 2 hole opposing bolt pattern but I think they had the thermostat sitting inside the intake manifold so may hit the inside of the 6 cylinder head.....andyd

Norm & Tim, from what I can work out the main cost is the actual freight, any duty would be no more than 10%, but freight would be the killer......I've checked the Coker website and from memory the US dollar price was roughly half the Oz dollar figure, even allowing for the exchange rate which at present is around .83 oz cents to the US dollar..........shipping ain't cheap......btw heres some pics of the car & wheels/tyres.......andyd

Last lot........interior pics.....original 1940 Dash & intruments, Smiths Tacho on dash, steering column is Oz 1969/70 Valiant upper & collapseable top piece adapted to home made polished alloy column, note also no wiper switch on the top of the dash....all Oz mopars had electric wipers......and the key ignition/button start is the original setup & original key, 1964 Chev pedal box, 1975 Oz Leyland P76 front seats, 1967-70(?) Valiant shifter & console adapted to 1962 push button cable operated cast Iron Torqueflite.......original rear seat......note stock Oz 1940 Dodge rear seat centre armrest and front door armrests......seat and door upholstery is in no name vinyl done by my mother in 1975......thanks mum.....lol........note that the roof lining was redone in velour about 6yrs ago by a local upholstere who also redid the door pictured.......that sewn pattern on the door is the original style.........anyway thats enough for tonight.......andyd
-
Oh........and the Vinyl Roof?.......lol........when I was building the car back in 1975, it had a couple of flat spots on the roof, I wasn't good enough to panel beat them out, so I had a vinyl top put on by a local upholsterer......and the colour?........I painted the car in a 1970-73 Oz Valiant colour, Mahogany Metallic......the paints thats in the pics has been on there since 1978, starting to show its age, but looks o/k from 20feet.....lol.........the engine is mounted quite low in the engine bay so pics are hard to get however hopefully you can get an idea.......the 318 Poly runs a Weiand single four intake & 600 Holley, I have a 57/58 factory twin 4 intake that will end up on it someday, the radiator is a recore by a local shop, the engine runs a remote oil filter mounted drivers side engine bay AND engine oil cooler mounted in front of the radiator, a transmission oil cooler and trans oil filter are mounted under the passenger side running board.......more to come.......andyd

I'm on a roll here.......have finally worked out how to post pics......anyway this is my Oz 1940 D15 Dodge Sedan, apart from 2" welded into the rear fenders the body is as made here in Australia by T.J.Richards of Adelaide in Sth Australia, yep the Plymouth body, chassis, fenders, hood, bumpers, head & tailights are correct, the Dodge grille whilst tha same basic profile of US 1940 Dodges is made from brass strips soldered together.......it also has the correct Dodge hood side trim pieces.......yep is is a hotrod.......I've had the car since Sept 1971, its been a hotrod since Easter 1973.......it has a 1962 318 Poly V8, Cast Iron Torquflite Auto, front end is made up of various mopar upper/lower arms, 1" custom sway bar, vented 11" disc brakes, narrowed Austin 1800 rack & pinion, original rear springs, uprated shocks front/rear, 1992 Oz Falcon disc brake rear............more to follow.......andyd
-
And heres the last lot.........lol.........the engine bay is a mess, but have tidied it up a bit from its arrival.......I do have the original air filter, tho' its running a Holden single barrel Stromberg, ex an Oz 186-202 cube GMH six, have installed the Langdon S10 dissy and Beehive filter, extra chrome bits help to increase terminal velocity.........eerrr yeh right andy.........other pics show its rear & side profile with its "Big Brother".......the 'ol brown turd........my 1940 Oz Dodge Sedan........andyd
-
Hopefuly these pics will be attached too........lol.......pics of the interior, dash, rear seat.......this car is an "Auxillary Seat Coupe" or P11 ASC......factory RHD built in Sth Africa.....also note the extra strong centre Sun Visor bracket, so far it works, made up of 2 pieces of stainless bent to hook under the centre bar then bolted together....and as far as I know it has a P15 steering wheel........andyd
-
Hopefully these pics will be o/k........andyd
-
Regarding the key on the drivers side only..........guess where it is on the RHD cars?.........the drivers side of course!!.......which is the US passenger side.........anyone with a set of LHD P11 doors they want to swap?.....lol..........andyd
-
Educated Rectum...........lol.......it may have been cheaper to ship the car to the US, buy & fit the rims & tyres there and ship the car back..........maybe not but you get my drift.........lol.........oh......and I forgot to add the cost of a wheel alignment to make sure the gold plated tyres don't wear out too soon.......andyd
-
Cause the drivers side is furthest from the curb, closest to oncoming cars.........for what its worth I never noticed much in the way of reflection from the one that my car had......not that I really went and looked either but a couple of "old timers" both told me that thats what that glass bump was for..........andyd
-
Fred.see my answer above......those things are a reflector........andyd
-
Fred, btw that rear pic shows 1940 Plymouth tailights, not 1941..........andyd
-
Fred, btw here in Oz all Australian Built 1940 Dodges used 1940 Plymouth tailights.......will get some pics posted of my car over the weekend.........lol.......andyd
