  1. Or if the battery is on its way out.
  2. Looks exactly like the break I had on the base of my carb. I had someone braze it up and redrill the hole. Of course, the carb base doesn't see nearly the amount of torque and vibration that the genny would.
  3. I would think that any test that is done without any testing equipment might not help you pinpoint the problem area. As long as connections are tight, turning the headlights on and cranking the engine, the lights should still be fairly bright while it's turning over. If they all but crap out, then it's likely the battery. Just take your car to Advance, they'll load test it. And yes, they've tested batteries for me and told me I didn't need a new battery before.
  4. Jeez, I don't think I've ever met anybody that didn't want to bother with something to do with my car. Most people I've dealt with would go above and beyond when I told them what I was working on. I've had people that couldn't help, but that's different. Maybe you need to move to the friendlier South:D I take that back, I've met ONE supplier that couldn't be bothered with helping me.
  5. Hey, there's still over 2 months left in the year. Somebody could swoop in and steal the award from you. As long as the whole exhaust system is tight, this should solve the issue.
  6. The shape is off a bit on my D24 hood. I have tried adjusting everything, but I think the only fix is replacing all of the weatherstripping and gaskets.
  7. A clothespin might be an alternative. Clip it over the 2 air intake holes on your cranium.
  8. The car was a licensed driver before he chopped the lid off. We don't have inspections anymore in SC. Skated around that issue on two counts, I guess.
  9. May be Lexan he used. Don't know if that'd make any difference. I'm pretty sure there's more than the windshield that's not DOT approved on this car. I think getting one made to fit would probably cost as much as the car itself. I guess he could take a windshield from a KG and just have the top edge cut down. I haven't seen the guy in about a year at the cruise-ins so I don't know what the status of the car is now. I know he's still driving it around, though.
  10. One thing that may hamper this guy's dreams of big bucks is that it doesn't look like it's going to be too easy to roll. I guess you could probably put new tires on and grease or replace the bearings, but that's going to keep most interest down in this thing, I think. Maybe only worth the $500 he originally wanted. I see some other campers in much nicer condition going for not a whole lot more than this one. I'd still love to have it, though.
  11. The shrimp are supposed to be good again this year. I know we've been pulling in some good ones for bait for fishing. I was worried about the owner waking up on the Airstream. At least he's started the bidding off at the same price http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1962-OR-1963-Airstream-Safari_W0QQitemZ260169487596QQihZ016QQcategoryZ50063QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
  12. A guy I know made his own roadster out of a Karman Ghia. Ended up being a neat little car. Funny how it all started out. He was talking to a buddy of his that knows VWs in and out and said he wanted to cut the top off. His friend said don't do it, you'll regret it. Went back and forth several times over several months. Finally the phone call came that he'd gone ahead and taken and sawzall to the roof of his car (Chris would be proud here). Well, he needed help because his car was sagging for some reason. So his friend came over and framed up the whole car so it was sturdy. It's actually a very solid car now. The windshield is just a piece of plexi so it's easy to pop out and put a new one in as needed. I believe you can see the framing just behind the seats in this picture. Just square tubing painted to match the car.
  13. Wish I had the land to store this thing. Don't know what I'd do with it, but for $500, I'd figure something out. http://charleston.craigslist.org/rvs/443944344.html
  14. Make sure you turn it off before you go giving it a hug. The wire wheel is one of those tools that's been on my "buy" list for a while. It's moved up pretty high in the list. Possibly the next thing I'll buy.
  15. One of my front doors doesn't stay open. I guess that could be the culprit. Never knew there was a possible fix.
  16. You keep hold of that wife of yours! Very cool story. I got my Dodge when I was 15, too. It was my grandfather's and his aunt's before that. He bought it from her in 1964, I think. Lots of similarities.
  17. Very cool. I wonder if it's a loop since it seems to cut at about the same time right when the exhaust valve opens. Much less violent than I expected.
  18. What happens when you blip the throttle? Does it still settle into the high rpm idle? If not, you may have something sticking somewhere.
  19. If you want a permanent sealant, look at 3Ms 5200. For a less than permanent seal, 4200. Pricey but won't let go like caulk or silicone
  20. Had almost that same issue on my D24. Cleaned the carb thoroughly and that took care of it. I could accelerate up to about 40mph, then once cruising, it'd buck. Couldn't accelerate or stay the same speed at that point.
  21. Saw a nice job of this done on a fiberglass kit car. Complete with rust holes and bubbles. You'd never guess it wasn't a steel bodied car
  22. If this is the picture that I think it is, I think some of the more freaky people do this as a form of exhibitionism. Why is it none of the attractive people ever want to do this kind of stuff?
  23. The question is, has anyone personally seen a hammer shatter? Or is this one that has been passed down as what happens when 2 hammers hit?
  24. Greg, Robert mentioned that Myth Busters did a show on this "proving" that this was false. I don't really buy it myself since they did a very limited study with only a few hammers. They did get an older hammer to split a little bit but not shatter. I think if they'd done the tests with a wider variety they may have had one shatter or at least get a good split.
