  1. I am always amazed at what people do to their cars. I bought a 47 2 door sedan. I love it. Had the engine rebuilt and it runs and sounds like a hot rod. Always looking for something else to do I decided to rewire the rear half. There were wires everywhere, all either red or blue. I started digging and found the wires go under the back seat to the front and back. I guess that would be okay but I wanted to get more original and go under the headliner. Problem: I can't get the wire down the frame by the door. There was one stray wire up there so I attached fishing line to it and pulled it through. I can't get the harness back through. Very frustrating. I've done this years ago on my 48 but the 47 is giving me all sorts of grief. I know it's supposed to travel down the frame and emerge under the dash but there is some sort of obstruction. any ideas would be appreciated.
  2. I had my completely gone through and it works perfectly. I was pleased with their work. VDO North Hollywood Speedometer & Clock Co. 6111 Lankershim Blvd No. Hollywood, CA 91606 818 761 4857 (e mail) info@nhspeedometer.com www.nhspeedometer.com
  3. Mr. Coatney sent me an e-mail suggesting I apologize for calling him names. He suggested I do this on the open forum. An interesting concept I have not been familiar with since the 8th grade. So let's see if we can cover some ground here. First: I did not call Mr. Coatney a name. I merely made an assessment of his on line demeanor. Let's begin at the beginning. I would like this to be for the record: Mr. Coatney you have made an effort to besmirch my legitimate question with pompous rhetoric and I would like to make clear my position. You said you didn't see the connection between adjusting the carbs and a tach meter. You intimated that I was trying to obtain the meter and suggested this was the wrong forum for that. Had you read the post carefully you would have seen my question was can a 12v meter work with a 6v system? You posted a reference (http://api.viglink.c..._13666440653124) which included a post (#15) by Dodgeb4ya. He included a page from a manual for twin carb adjustment. #3 - "Start the engine and set the idle speed to 400 rpm..." The same thread from Powerhouse mentioned "I then adjusted the mix screws... about 3/8 of a turn so it ran at 475 rpm." How did he know? I must disagree with your premise that "the tach/dwell meter will not work and is not required to sync the carbs." If you want to dwell on semantics I will concede the tach is not "required" but it is still a useful tool when properly utilized. I will agree, however, it may have nothing to do with synchronizing - but tuning each individual carb first would be a prelude to successful synchronizing. Finally: you are correct in that you have made many positive, helpful posts. It's the negative, snide, hurtful remarks that are the most remembered. I must say that the idea of me apologizing to you for an honest opinion is ludicrous. I do so hope this will be the end of this.
  4. Don Coatney: While many accept you as the resident forum curmudgeon I see no need for your acerbic reproofs. Yes, this thread is about carburetor synchronization - with an assist from a 6v tach. If this thread concerns you so much why don't you positively contribute; other wise why do you become involved? There are others on the forum that found the exchange of information interesting. Are you suggesting that if there is a legitimate question about a tool it shouldn't be asked in this forum? I would like to thank Merle Coggins for putting things in perspective without being condescending or negative. I am reluctant to post because of you.
  5. Okay - I don't want to start anything controversial but I have a couple of questions that I have heard many answers to. I was looking on the bay for a tach and dwell meter. Some people say that any will work on a 6v car - others say it must be a 6v meter. I am trying to sync my carbs and I would like to know the RPMs. I'm having a tough time getting them together. It doesn't make sense to me but with the car at an idle, linkage disconnected, if I push in (close) the throttle on the front carb the car will die. If I put my hand over the rear carb the idle will slow but not die. The sync tool on the back carb is hovering right in the middle - on the front carb it blasts right to the top. I don't mean to run this in the ground and I know it's probably covered somewhere but I'd appreciate some feed back.
  6. I couldn't find the attach - hope this works button.
  7. I spent 10 years in the movie business and I can't do movies - but I did take some stills. Not real professional but I wasn't there to take pictures. It's so interesting that when you walk up to most old car owners they will talk your ear off. I spoke to people who drove down from Oregon, SF bay area, Salt Lake City. The old girls still do work. (there were a few trailer queens).
  8. I know I'm probably doing something wrong but I can't get into either Tech, Resources, or Members. When I click on them at the top of the page nothing happens. Someone help me into the 21st century.
  9. I will probably get scolded for not doing my own research on this but I'm confused about syncing the carbs. How is that done? Is it best to have George do it? What should I expect to pay? I've never heard of that. Maybe that's why my car is so hard to start cold and it won't idle until it's warmed up. I would appreciate any info on this procedure.
  10. Silly question - what I do best. I also have dual exhaust - how do you adjust the valves? The only way I can see to do it is to remove the headers. I can't figure an easy way to do it.
  11. I've done 1 1/2 cars and I'm waiting for the second half to come. I recommend RIW they are easy to work with and not only answer questions but when I did my 48 I was confused (not unusual) and I sent them the wires and they duplicated them. I just like the look of the cloth wiring. There are those that suggest doing it yourself but it just doesn't have the same look. Just my opinion.
  12. I hate to say it but it might be the original. (if that's possible) I've done so many things and sometimes I fail to remember. It's like it ran perfect then little things began happening. I found a small hole in the fuel line. I don't know if this could be true but I surmised that the electric fuel pump was just sucking air. I found the hole - replaced the line - tested the fuel pump and it made noise, it was running, but it was not pulling any gas. So I replaced it. Problem solved. But once it was started it just didn't run. I got it into the garage - while it was running I pulled the battery cable off. The car shut down. I looked at the voltage regulator but had no idea what I was looking at. So I figured first I'd have the genny tested. There aren't a lot of moving parts so when the guy tested it I figured it could just be brushes. I sure hope that's all it is.
  13. I know this thread is dead so I'm just sort of writing this to myself. Someone might see it. I guess this is just general information. I took the generator out and took it to a shop for testing. The guy came back and told me it was putting out 10 amps. I have no idea if that is good or bad. He said it takes about 40 amps to run the car. Guess I found the problem. He's going to rebuild it. I'm ready for Tucson. d-
  14. George Asche did mine and I have no complaints.
  15. I've called Restoration Specialties and while they have everything else they don't have the rocker clips. If you find any share with everyone.
  16. I found some pictures I thought I'd share with you. The first thing to check is the size of the clip - make sure it fits in the hole. Second - I have found the ones with the little round holes don't fit - no matter what they tell you. Third - that's what they should look like but I bought some used and they just were missing pieces and would require more work than I was prepared to invest. Good luck with your search.
  17. Thank you - I'm going right now. Actually I'm going to pull then genny from one car and put it in the other. That will narrow things down. Thanks again.
  18. Good luck. There is a guy on e-bay selling 8 of them for $160. Too rich for me. I have bought used ones that just don't work. I've called people that deal in clips but they don't have them. You need to be careful because there are different sizes. I bought one set and they didn't fit - off a DeSoto or something. If you find someone who has them let me know - I'm looking too.
  19. Good thread - thank you
  20. Okay - I know this is important but I don't know how to interpret the findings. I had the car running and I pulled the negative wire off the battery and the car died. I should know this from Auto Shop 101 but I can't remember (I took auto shop 50 years ago). The battery is on the charger right now - tomorrow I will delve into the beast. Tom, thank you for the info - I will check all that tomorrow. Today I changed the oil, checked all the levels trying to get her pretty. At least I have a pretty non running car. This has been a trying day.
  21. The bad news is I'm plagued with problems - the good news they're little problems. The car runs great. I had a little problem with the fuel pump (electrical) now I have a new one. Started the car up - sounds great. Problem: no movement in the amp gauge. So what are we looking at? Coil? Voltage regulator? Generator? Amp gauge? I'm going to take it to Tucson next month and I'd hate to have it crap out in the middle of the desert. Any hints will be appreciated. Tomorrow it's getting the once over.
  22. Could that be it? Bad harmonicas? I don't know if it's a flutter, flooper, or freep but I do know the technology is fabulous. How do you do that? What a great tool for getting sounds across. I've been so slow in embracing the 21st century.
  23. I believe the ceiling is about 17'. The contractor beefed up the floor when he built it. It was an option to have them bolted or left free standing. I live in an earthquake area so I had them bolted.
  24. It is kind of ironic that my next project doesn't require a lift - I'm going to rewire the 47. I will use the lift to find and fix all the silly little oil leaks. I've spent so much time on my back looking up that once I get to more carefully explore the underside I'm sure I'll find a myriad of things to do. One cool thing is I can put the car on jack stands, pull the wheel and stand up to look at the brakes. I'm so excited about this whole adventure. Think of all the money you've spent sending your kid to college, orthodontia, remodeling the kitchen... Instead I got a garage with a lift.
  25. I have wanted one of these for a long time. Today it was installed. I hope I'm not too old to enjoy it. As a side note: It is a 2 car garage - when it's empty it looks huge. When you put 2 cars in it that sucker just shrinks right up. And what a chore to empty out the old garage with 10 years of accumulated parts and junk and rat turds. But it keeps me busy.
