  1. I notice we lost quite a few frequent posters, and some don't post near as much. Hardly ever hear from GTK, the boss hisself, anymore. Best forum on the 'net.
  2. We have a few discount stations where you can get cheaper gas that are "full serve". Be nice if they could speak or understand english. They treat you like scum as well. Don't go to them at all cheap gas or not.
  3. I like...well done!
  4. I think they were a dealer installed option like the heaters or radios. I'm sure they would be "correct" if installed.
  5. I bought this 50 DeSoto for $250...a treasure trove of spare parts(check those door handles). Parts for these cars are not rare or really that hard to find if you look around a bit. No need to pay inflated prices. Ask around, shop around.
  6. On the 49 Chrysler, I found that any modern wheel would hit the tierod end/steering arm...wrong backspacing. Every one I ever tried was like that. PITA!!
  7. Well, I guess you have to put it in perspective. While I'm sure that hantavirus has been around for a very long time, the dangers have only been well known for a few years. Over the years I have cleaned out 2 dozen old cars full of mouse turd and not only didn't wear a mask, but it never even remotely crossed my mind. I'm sure every other person here has done the same. We survived just fine I guess I'm just not willing to take the chance now that I know the risk. I'm older now and I have quite enough wrong with this abused body without adding another.
  8. Looks good, Rodney.
  9. Taking it to a mechanic sure isn't wussing out, if you have never turned a wrench on a car this particular problem might be very discouraging. It is a common discussion on this board of mostly more experienced guys. Lots of no-start brainstorming all the time. If there is an older mechanic around familiar with the older six volt cars, take advantage of his experience, watch very closely what he does and ask questions. Trust me, there will be plenty of things that you can work through yourself once the old girl is running. Were rootin' for ya
  10. I am not sure that our era rear drums are the same design as the 1957-58 units, but this video might come in handy for some. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AcI-Di8BPI0 Made by a fellow from another website who is a paramedic and restores these part time. He was unlucky enough to have his entire shop burn to the ground recently He was lucky enough to escape injured but alive. http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=19761&start=1 Pics on page two...not for the faint of heart.
  11. Best mod you can make to these old Mopars...you will really like the difference.
  12. Nine Bucks!!!??? Holy Crap!!!!
  13. Too late now, but dried mouse urine and droppings may contain the hantavirus and one of the things that is strongly discouraged is vacuuming an area where mouse droppings are, especially indoors as it disperses the potential virus through the vacuum and into the air making it that much easier to contract this deadly disease. Just a note for next time and for any others who were unaware of the potential dangers from mouse droppings/dried urine.
  14. After a solid week of snow, blowing snow, wind, cold and just generally sh!tty weather, the day dawns warm and sunny for the annual Nifty Fifties Ford Club All Makes and Years Show N Shine. Great turnout...about 2-250 when I left at 11 am. Only got a few pics before the batteries died
  15. this might fit the bill. some history to it and not that far away and made in the US of A http://cgi.ebay.com/HUGE-REED-ANTIQUE-SHOP-VISE-FROM-BLACKSMITH-SHOP-NR_W0QQitemZ370045373683QQihZ024QQcategoryZ13869QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
  16. I like a well done, propotional chop that gets finished. We see all too many that get to this stage and are abandoned or put up for sale to someone else to finish, and that never happens. Yours is well proportioned and will look good finished. Keep us updated!
  17. HA!!! I could do THAT!!!
  18. This is very nice! http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1948-Plymouth-Woodie-Phantom-Street-Rod_W0QQitemZ180236508086QQcmdZViewItem
  19. I'd buy it but I don't care for yellow Interesting that the high bidder has a zero feedback.
  20. Pete, you guys are safe from snow in August? Must be nice...
  21. Thanks Howard...
  22. You know, this has been a real eye opener not only because of the interesting way that this thread detoured and the two guys involved have had a mature understanding of what REALLY happened, but the way it evolved on the forum. I belong to other forums and lurk at a few others a bit since I have been laid up here and one glaring difference is that this was a real give and take discussion whereas on almost every other forum I can guarantee it would have degenerated into a flaming war of name calling and internet insults and would have ended up being locked. I'm not able to do anything on my car, but coming here keeps up the enthusiasm and interest until I can get back at it. Very interesting and restful to come here. Claybill and MyHeadisFlat...glad you worked it out and I'm impressed at the way you both conducted yourselves here. You are both a credit to the forum. Thanks for being here. Just one guys opinion
  23. The 3 speed fluid drive transmission car is no different from a regular 3 speed car, EXCEPT that you can let the clutch out without stalling the car. No difference in shifting at all because it's the same 3 speed transmission. Simply put, you have a "torque converter" in place of the normal flywheel. The regular clutch is bolted to that and behind is a regular 3 speed. (in this case, there is no torque multiplication and so the "torque converter" is actually just a fluid coupling)
  24. I'm thinkin if my parts store guys can't tell the difference between a 6 and 12 volt battery, that I wouldn't be darkening THAT doorstep again!!!! Find an older small independent Mom and Pop parts store with a counter guy who was around when dirt was new.
  25. Leave the electrical as is for this year and tackle the conversion over the winter. If you start that now, you won't make it and you'll be pissed. Enjoy it...the six volt isn't near that bad if you go through it cleaning grounds and installing the correct battery cable.
