  1. For you guys that can not attend Hershey inthe fall. Lets figure around 8-10 Thousand vendors and over 2000 cars to be judged. There are over four main fields and it takes you at least one day just to walk one field. It is Meca of the east. I have been going for over 20 years. When it started they only had enought vendor to fill the inside of the footbal stadium and not it has grown to be a super giant of a show. Also the prices are high but that is what you get when some of the guys are traveling in Prevost Buses that cost over a million and then pulling trailers with their fully restored V16Packards, Caddys etc and then they paid someone to do the full restoration and do not even know anything about their cars. Us drivers have to know so much more. i do like the show cars dont get me wrong but I like the drivers better. rich h
  2. I have the 39 Desoto with the long block enegine just like the CHryslers. The Dizzy has a slot onthe end that slides into the oil pumps and is not gear driven. So in this way the dizzy could only be out 180 degrees. If the piston was getting inthe way of the dizzy shaft there would have to be an oppening in the clyinder wall. I have removed my dizzy many times without beeing a tdc. I just mark the location on the block and the location of the rotor on the body of the dizzy. And then when I put it back in i just matchup the marks and readjust to fine tune to the mark on my timing dampener. Ans I also use a 12v craftsmand timing light and get plenty of light to set the dizzy. rich Hartung desoto1939@aol.com
  3. I have the Pinion Seal puller that was used on the 39 Desotos I assume this will fit your truck. The puller screws in the seal and then you turn a bolt that pushes the seal out from the pinion area. This is a Miller Tool that was used by the Mopar Delaers. I also have serveral other Miller tools if you guys need to borrow them. Contact me if you need to use it. Rich HArtung desoto1939@aol.com
  4. You can contact a gentleman joe Callent. He is a member of the Walter P Chrysler Club and can make you a completely new driveshaft that has GM yoke and the newer style universal joints. Memetion that you are a memebr of the WPC. The cost is around 365 and will bolt up to your existing trans and rearend. This way you get to keep the original driveshaft and have a spare. Contact Joe at Callent.Joe@gamil.com rich hartung desoto1939@aol.com
  5. Eastwood Products ***( NO LONGER HAS THESE TOOLS. THEY JUST RESPONDED BACK TO ME) 7/8/09 Eastwood Products did have these two tools listed in their catalog several years ago but I have not seen any in the past several years. I have sent them an email inquiring to see if they still have them or if they have the suppliers name that manufactured them. eastwood is close to my home and I will post their answer if they still have the two versions of the tool. I would be interested in the tool to fit the nut that has the two slots in the chrome mounting nut Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com
  6. I have used the newere vynal fender welting for several reasons. 1. This asct as an anti squeek between the fender and the body. 2. If you get wax on the vynal it will not stain like the original 3. The original being cloth soaks up the water and this then cause the inner fender where it mounts to the body to start to rust. 4. If you get polish onthe cloth it stays white and you can not get it off. 5. Most fender welting ways always black expect for the chrome SS style. 6. For judging the welt is black and sohould not be painted. 7. It always looks good and keeps its apperance 8. Ihave had mine on my 39 Desoto for 12 years and it has not changed color and is stillin perfect condition. 9 being simi rigid you can work with this very easily. rich hartung desoto1939@aol.com
  7. Don> i do the work that I am capable of doing. Brake jobs, Water pump etc. tuneup things that I feel comfortable with. I know my limitations rich Hartung
  8. If your are a good backyard mechanic and can do the job and have the tools to pullthe axle and the knowhow then the job can be done. But if you messup and then have to have the car towed then figure this price and then any other damage that you might have done. Compare the work effort with your experience level. The older pre front wheel cars were much easier for the backyard mechanic to work on. This is only thoughts. good luck Rich
  9. Definately get a cover onthe car. This will protect it from getting dust onthe car. Dust and dirt when onthe car can scratch the car when you run you hand over the body. Some people do this very often and then the scratches start to appear. Here isa suggestion. MArk on the cover each corner by the widshield RF LF and by the rear window LR RR. This way you always know if you have the cover on backwards if you take it off. Get into a habit off alwasy rolling the cover up in the same manner when taking it off the car. This also helps when putting it back onthe car. If you do get any dust onthe car you can use a detailers spray and a mirofiber towel to just wipe off the dust. Sugestion here is that cut off the little tag on the micro fiber towels these will scratch the paint. Alwasy use a good car wash such a Maguiers never use a liquid dish soap as this will remove all of your wax or polish. I also use a california squeegie to remove the water beads from the car after washing the car. This get the water off the car without letting it dry on the car and to form waterspots. Then use a large microfiber drying towl with the tag removed to dry that car. I got all of these techniques from a major auto detailer while attending the AACA convention that is held every Feb here in Philadelphia. If you have little kids in the family also cover the fenders with extra old bed spreads since these areas are very likely to get hit by kids bikes and other objects. I have leraned this from experience. Rich Hartung desoto1939@aol.com
  10. I agree with what you did and asked the owner to clean up after his dog. He is the one that is responsible for their dog. And if he just stood there and watched the dog do its business then he is really at fault. Secondly he should not have the dog that close to the car. The chaing and dog tags can scratch the car. If that happened I would be askign the owner to pay for the repairs. I guess it would have been ok for you to go take a number two on his car. i do not think he would have liked that. I like dogs and animals but they do not belong at car shows. If you bring yours then your are responsible for what ever damage they do to another person property just as if a child damaged another persons property. You the owner control what happens. Rich H
  11. Go to your auto parts store and then get some gasket material. Use the lid as you template and trace the outlines. Get the rubber cork material. Al you are trying to do is seal out that water and dirt do not get into the main part of the cylinder. Eaven a thin peice of paper gasket would do you just fine. Cut out the inside so you can fill the cylinder and so the unit can let out the pressure out when releasing the pedal. rich hartung
  12. HAve a 39 Desoto. I checked the rear drums and they are tight. They keys are not deformed and they are inperfect shape. When the car is in the gargae and shift into reverse and start to back out the car when the clutch is let out and car in reverse get a klunk sound. Could this be the universal joints starting to go? I have the old style detroit u joints. Opionio is if this is the case would you convert over to a modern drive shaft and also how can i determine if the u joints are going south. When driving the car and shifting into second or third I do not hear the klunk. The drums were taken off the cr over the winter to check for brake springs and new outer seals were put onthe car. Not leaking any rear end grease at that time, just a maintenance checkup. Also lubricated the inner bearing via the removal of the plug on the rear axle on each side. I can get a totally new drive shft for around 350 that will just bolt upto the trans and rear end. Any advise rich HArtung Desoto1939@aol.com
  13. Harmonic damper From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation, search A harmonic damper is a device fitted the free (accessory drive) end of the crankshaft of an internal combustion engine. It is essential in engines with long crankshafts (such as straight-8 engines) and is present on most engines as it reduces torsional vibrations that tend to peak at certain speeds. Contents [hide] 1 Need 2 Construction 3 Identification 4 Maintenance [edit] Need Without the presence of a damper a long crankshaft will tend to act as a torsional spring to some extent. Impulses applied to the crankshaft by the connecting rods will tend to "wind" this spring, which will respond (as a spring-mass system) by unwinding and re-winding in the opposite direction. This will usually be damped out naturally, but at certain crankshaft rotational speeds the impulses from the cylinder firing can be in synchronization with the natural resonant frequency. (Some aircraft engines are restricted from continuous operations at specific RPM to avoid the danger of metal fatigue causing a break in the crankshaft.) In an automotive engine there is little control over operation in such specific speed bands and furthermore there may be uncomfortable vibrations as the engine is operated through such speeds, even if not a problem for engine durability. In rare cases, a portion of the crankshaft system's overall balancing may be provided by an unbalanced damper. [edit] Construction The damper consists of an inner hub affixed usually by a key and keyway to the outer end of the crankshaft. An outer circular mass is attached to the hub by an integral rubber or other elastomeric section. This crankshaft and damper together become (in its torsional response) a spring-mass-damper system. By selection of the damping section material and the size of the outer mass the damper may be made to resist and thus quiet the specific torsional vibrations. These vibrations will not be at the same frequency as originally since additional mass has been added to the resonant system, so the damper must be tuned for the resultant circumstances. The overall appearance is that of a thick disk. [edit] Identification The damper will be fitted at the front of the engine (opposite the clutch or transmission, just beyond the cover of the timing chain, gears, or belt, and behind the accessory drive pulley (which may carry one or more V-belts or a single serpentine cog-belt. In older vehicles there will usually be an inscribed timing mark, there for purposes of setting the ignition timing. [edit] Maintenance There is no need for maintenance of such a simple system since modern synthetic rubbers will be resistant to any oil leaking from the engine's front seal. Retrieved from "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harmonic_damper" In the picture of the truck engine the harmonic balancer or damperner as refer to part 9-13-5 is where the timing mark is onthe engine and this does have a rubber inner that is used to absorb crankshaft vibrations. And if the vibrations are not absorbed then this can be felt when driving. read the verbage from the Wiki that is above. rich Hartung
  14. Merle: i looked at the attached parts list and refer to the part number 9-13-5. This is listed as the dampner or cracnkshaft vibration dampner or as other people call it a harmonic balancer. This has a rubber mouting which helps balance the engine and also has the flat spot for timing with the timing marks. This do go and there is a guy inthe WPC Dampner Doc that can repair these. Look at the printout that was on the first posting. All engines have the vibration dampner. rich hartung desoto1939@aol.com
  15. On my 39 deSoto i had a new clutch a pp put in the car along with rea motot mounts. Then drove the car and then noticed some vibration when driving the car. The mechanic told me that the harmonic damper needed to be replaced. This stopped the vibrations. This could be your problem. Just a thought. rich desoto1939@aol.com
  16. Rodney: i the older cars there was always some play because back inthe early days of road building all of the roads had a high berm or crown so the radway sort of had an egg shape to them. The car manufacturer had to make some play in the wheel to compensate for this crown afect. The other problem that we face is that the roads of today are more flat and have very little slope so our older cars seem to wander down the road. Also our modern cars now have power steering and rack and pinion systems which make for a tighter feel onthe steering wheel. The only thing inthe box would be the steering sector and some oil. The sector could be worn Also did you ever have the steering wheel off the shaft. Sometimes when they could not get the alignment to be perfect and to have the wheel centered they would pullthe wheel and then center it back onthe shaft. When this was done the shaft is not in dead center on the sector so you can then get more play. These are just some thoughts on this topic. Rich desoto1939@aol.com
  17. In 1939 The Chrysler, DeSoto and Dodge all had the 11 x 2 inch brake drums and these drums. The Chry and DeSoto had the bolts that used right hand thread on all wheel and the Dodge used the studs on all the drums. I have a 39 DeSoto with the original drive line and front end. Rich desoto1939@aol.com
  18. This is a very rae 39 Rumble Seat roadster. Did you notice the dual sidemounts. Only the 39 Ply sedan delivery had the right side mount. I know the owner of this car. The original lady that owner that 39 alwasy had dual sidemounts onher cars. When she ordered the car she told the salesman that she wanted duals onthe car. This was a factory made right side mount that was made for the car. This car was shown at Hershey severalyears ago and is a great looking car. I have traded parts with the current owner over the years. Rich harutn desoto1939@aol.com
  19. When we have the WW on our car we usually clean just before a car show or going our on a run. The tires get dirty from the daily run. we come home and then put the car to bed, cover them up so not to get dirt onthe body and get any scratches. Kiss the old girl goodnite and say our thanks for a safe run back home. We have found that this is the time before but the car to bed is when you should clean the WW tires to get off the most current road grime and then when we take it out the next time the WW are not so hard to clean and also might not need to be cleaned. I have a set of WW on my 39 Desoto for the past 10 years and have used Westley WW cleaner all these years and my tires have never turend yellow. Spray on the liquid and then use a soft nylon brush and they always clean up nicely. Rich Hartung desoto1939@aol.com
  20. I lloked at the picture of your truck and saw that there is a bound brook NJ on the side. I have relatives that live in South Branch NJ raritan. My father inlaw has several model a and also had a 1915 Willy overland that had a leather cone clutch that I learned to drive on as my first antique car. Are you a member of the Jersey region of the AACA they are a great goup of guy. I have know them for 20+ years. I live near Valley Forge PA. rich hartung desoto1939@aol.com
  21. The car is gone but luck had it that the kids were in the house and not playing around the car and also that the ownere was not working on the car when this happened. It is a sad day for the owner but the loss of a life is even worse. The memories will last for ever with the owner with all of his great time with the car. Wish him best of luck in getting a new ride. rich
  22. Hi guys I have a 39 Desoto 4 door Sedan that is mostly original. The upholstry is still orgoinal and all of the body and engine and drive train areoriginal. i like keeping the cars to this vintage. i agree this will go to someone that will rod it but if we can not buy it then the guy with the money gets the car. Here is a picture of my 39 Desoto. i can cruise at 50-55 mph. There isa picture of the original clock int he glove box lid. This is a great car and I have fun driving with only 94K original miles. 24. I have verified the part number in my 1936 to 42 MAster Parts Book for the Desoto's. Yes the Chrysler and Desoto engine had 92m hp and with the Aluminum head you would increase to 100 hp. This definately is a factory head. This head can be used on all the larger Chrysler and Desoto engines and the Big Dodge that were built in Canada. This will work up until the earlyt 50 with all the L6 head engines. Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com
  25. Attached are some picture of the original MopAr Aluminum head that fors the 37 and up Chrylers and Desoto and the Big Block Dodge engines. It has the DPCD logon on the head. The unit is flat and I ran a flat bar along the edges and there look to be very straight. If anyone is look for an orginal Mopar Alum head this unit is available See the pictures. These are rare to find in this condition almost NOS or very close. Rich Hartung desoto1939@aol.com
