  1. Don: try this link about cashew oil mixed in our brake shoes: Results showed that the friction materials containing 5% and 10% cashew dust improved friction stability and fade resistance. The Effect of Cashew to The Friction Performance Of Automotive Brake … www.academia.edu/96535612/The_Effect_of_Cashew_to_The_Friction_Perfo Rich Hartung
  2. Crushed cashews used in many products: taken from the webpage on cashews The oil that is extracted from the fruit of the cashew referred as cashew oil. A cashew nut has a hard shell outside with two layers. The outer layer is oily and inner layer hard within the soft nut is contained. Cashew nut shell liquid oil is extracted from the outer layer of the cashew shells. Some researches have found that the cashew oil is being used to treat dental cavities. Other benefit includes to prevent it from termite attack and useful in treating wood. Other uses of cashew oils are to used as an additive to brake fluid, to reduce brake fade and brake lining wear. 3. The end that has the hole is used when pushing the pin into the ball. When the end hits the pall then the pin is centered in the ball end. That is what is implied by the instructions. But it is best to mic the old pin prior to pushing it out of the ball to ensure that you have equal length on either side of the ball. This is what they would have used at the dealership and also a driveline repair centers. Below are the factory Miller tools pictures taken from my Miller tool catalog. I also have the installation jig and the set of two tools to push the pin in and out. Rich Hartung
  4. For all of you MoPar guys that has the Pin and Trunion Cross UJoints. I was at the local swap meet and car show and came across 3 complete sets of the Tool to remove and Install then pin that is on the end of the driveshaft. These are rare tools to find and still in the original packaging. I have sold them all but hae a set for myself. They all went to fellow MoPar owners. Rich Hartung
  5. The 1946-50 service manual for your Plymouth will all work for your car. You do not need an original a reprint will be good. Consider using at least 14 gage and higher for your rewiring. Contact Rhode Island wiring they has lots of premade year specific and car specific wire harnesses available Rich hartung.

Sniper: So if the new reproduction points and condensers are jsut junk and failing what then is the next best thing that we should be purchasing. I have a condenser tester and basically I always look for Autolite points and condensers. I always test my condensers to see what the Micro farads are on each condenser. All of the ones I have I get a rating of .3- .4. So I am staying with this items even though they are no longer being made. Have to draw a line in the sand at some point and I know that the Autolite products were quality products. Everyone picks their own poison. Rich Hartung
  7. Sniper: i sort of disagree with you about the old part numbers. I have found that these part numbers in general are still good. Lets take brake linings. The lining were all given numbers and they because used by most of the manufacturers and the lining #s were stamped on the shoes and on the boxes. I have found several still in the original boxes with rivets for 1162 linings for my 1939 Desoto at several large swap meets such as Hershey and even smaller local swap meets. Just by having these numbers helps in my searching and identifying parts for my car. Yes, some of the part numbers might not be found but if you looked at the info on the entire throwout unit and with it being identified the various car and years that used the same unit. This is what is the important part of the info is that if a seller had the unit on his table marked as 1950 Std trans and you needed it for a 42 Desoto std trans then this part will work for your car. This is the beauty of the catalogs. When these parts are purchased by a vendor like Bernbaums they are also doing the same thing. So, if they would find a 2p1054 unit they can now know that the part can be used to work on the DPCD cars for a 10 year span. Some of the small vendors do not have the catalogs that I have so i have seen these items on the 1-5 dollar pile because I know the numbers that i am looking at. Several years ago i saw a box of 10 of the leather u joint covers. Because I knew the number and the number was on the box end. I opened the box to verify the units and number because they were also stamped on the leather cover. They were the correct number for my car and several other mopar years. I purchased the entire box for $10. The seller did not know what he had but I did, so a great find for me and he made a sale and was happy. This is my point, be educated on your car, you will get some great surprises when go to a swap meet. Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com
  8. Again my 1939 DeSoto is now 84 and 3 months old since it came off the assembly line on May 13 1939. It has always had points and condenser in the dizzy. It has run just fine with the original Autolite electrical parts. Last summer I drove the 39 Desoto from Philadelphia pa to and from Altoona PA to attend the National desoto car show and convention. I traveled at 50 mph and got between 15-18 mpg and did not have any overdrive with the std 3 speed trans and a 4.10 rear end. I had no problem with any cars or trucks while traversing the PA Turnpike. even the cars and truckers gave me plenty of room and showed alot of respect for the car. Even one tractor tailer drive stayed behind the car all the way from Harrisburg to the Valley forge Exit of the Pa turnpike to act as a buffer for any car or semi that was traveling inthe slow lane on my way home, so could not ask anything better than that. And people say that the tracker cause accidents. So even converting to a Petronixs system can have issues but I believe in the tried and true points and condensers and the good old Autolite components. I carry spare parts for my car at all times which are alot cheaper that a spare petronix system. If you get your car well maintained then you will get good service. So I guess the guys that want to switch over to petronix might not understand the older systems. I might be wrong but this is just my take on the issue. Comments are welcomed. I now have over 101000 miles on the car. Rich Hartung
  9. I listed this item so that the person that is looking for the part might look at the item on ebay and send a message to the seller asking if they might have the specific part that he is looking for. I can not do everything for everyone, the looker has to do some of the searching on their own. People are getting lazy and what everyone to find them the part or parts. We now have more look up options than we did when i first started in this hobby. Rich Hartung
  10. Maybe one of the points in the regulator is sticking. Rich Hartung
  11. The AACA does not approve of radial tires on the older antique cars. Their statement is that the car was engineered to use Bias Ply tires and that the front suspension was made for these types of tires. The use of radial tires is not approved because of the way the tire is designed to roll and the geometry of the frame and front suspension was not designed to handle this type of roll and so is not approved. We all know that people are running radials on their antique cars. The option is totally yours, but if you plan to have the car judged in an AACA show they will deduct major points for the radial tires. Rich hartung
  12. tyr this option on ebay: AT Clutches Throw out bearing 614036 fits Chrysler Dodge Fargo Plymouth Condition: NewNew Compatibility: See compatible vehicles Quantity: 4 available / 24 sold Price: US $29.20
  13. I have the same master cylinder in my 39 Desoto. One suggestion is take the top off the MC and reerse it so that the filler hole is visible when looking in the engine compartment. The fill hole bolt should be at the front so you can fill it and also look into see if it needs brake fluid. Also make sure that the hole in the cap on the side is open. I did this so I do not have to remove the floor mat and it makes it easier to maintenance the MC. Rich Hartung desoto1939@aol.com
  14. Check Bernbaums for the full wheel cover inserts to stop the full hub cap from moving and cutting your tire valvestem. saw he had them 4 for $20. Rich Hartung

Is the tag still on the distributor body? Sine you can not read the tag from just leaning over the fender you might have to take the dizzy out of the engine to read the tag. If the tag is worn then put some white paper over the tag and do a pencil rubbing of the tag it then might be readable for the numbers. Also make on the block a specific location as a reference point and also a reference point on where the rotor is pointing on the body or lip or edge of the dizzy body. This will help when putting the dizzy back into the block. Since the end of the dizzy shaft has a boss that goes into a slot on the oil pump you are either dead on or could be 180 out of rotation if the car will not start. I have run for the past 35 years points in my 39 Desoto and it still has the original distributor. I use Autolite points and condensors since this is what was delivered when the car was new. 16. Here is some info on the sleeve with bearing; Replace the entire unit and start will all new parts. Hartung desoto1939@aol.com
  17. Regular brake fluid will eat all paints. If I remember correctly that DOT3 brake fluid is made from the crushed shells of the Almond or might be Pecan shells. The acid in these shells is why you never see these peanuts in the shells. If you touched the outer shell with your bare hands or fingers the acid will burn your skin. DOT5 brake fluid will not eat paint but the other brake fluids will eat your paint. Even with DOT 5 you still should be careful near any painted surfuaces. Rich Hartung
  18. Binster your are welcome. This is one of the main reasons why the purchasing of old time parts catalogs is sooooooo important. These older catalogs provide so much information and knowledge about these older cars and you always learn new information. Rich Hartung
  19. Question: are you adding any thing to the gas tanks such as LEAD Additive or Marvels Mystery oil or any other product? Also check the gap on all the plugs. Also run the engine in your garge at night time will all the lights turned off and open the hood to see if you have any tracers coming off the wires. If you see blue streaks then the wires are leaking and then replace all the wires at the same time. Just my 50 cents worth of input. Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com Here is information taken from my Autolite sparkplugs catalog which starts at 1930:
  20. Since these older gasket are not easy to find I make my own gaskets for my by pass oil filter lid. All you need is a compass and pair of sissors and also make a couple gaskets. The mother of invention is the savior when something is necessary needed right now. Rich Hartung
  21. Since the Coker tire company has identified that their tires are getting Browning on their whitewall tires You should askthem to at least send you a sample of the product to use to see if this will remove the Browning on the tires. Explain to them that this is alot cheaper than having to refund your cost for the tires and if it works then you can take pictures as proof and then they can use this in their product sales literature. I would give this a try but only on their dime not yours. You already have spent a lot of money on their tires so they should make good on some product to correct the situation. If you do not ask then you will never know, they might even say yes. Remember a happy customer spreads good recommendations an unhappy customer spreads bad recommendations!!!!!! 23. I spoke with the owners of Universal Tire out in the Hershey area that also supplies tires for our older cars. They DO NOT remommend Bleche-White to clean the whitewall tires. It will dryout the rubber and then you will get cracks. They strongly recommend Simple Green. Rich hartung.
  24. I would box off the existing frame. This way you know all of the existing body mounts will work and also any of the fenders will still attach correctly. Rich hartung 1939 Desoto owner
  25. I have heard that the Coker tire company is no longer owned by the Coker family and it was sold and also the name. Also have heard that they are having issues with the tires. I use Universal Tire Company for all my tires for my 39 Desoto. Do your research on the tires that you want on your car since these things are not cheap. I clean my tires with Simple Green. Rich Hartung
