  1. Hi all, here are 2 pics of a deck lid I want to use on my Chrysler, the paint was wore off the outside , but the metal is good and solid, even the inside bottom lip is in good shape with a small amount of rust through, the exterior is in straight shape compared to the one on the car now. I want to know what I should do to clean and de-rust the surface, it will be followed by 2k epoxy primer. If it needs to be sand blasted I will send it out, could it be sanded and wire brushed followed by a chemical metal prep before the epoxy goes on...................Thanx Fred:confused:
  2. Tim , In my 48 Chrys I have a 3 spd trans and dry clutch, as well my diff is a 4.11 or 4.30. Not sure how this car came by these low gears, I do know the engine and trans is from a 1951 Canadian Doge, which is the big block 6, the diff I am not sure where it comes from. When I have marked the drive shaft and wheel I get either somewhere between 410 and 430 when counting revolutions. Again is this the right way to do this. How fast will it be to safely drive this thing as is, at 40 to 45 its hummin along pretty good, at 55 it will be sounding busy, I do have a 3.54 or a 3.90 in the yard here, it's in a 47 Chrys Windsor with the M5 trans, don't think I would ever go back to fluid drive and M5 though........Fred
  3. Hey this just proves it, we are all above average intelligence on this forum, 8 out of 11 for me............The Rock
  4. Hey Tim, I don't have to put those bullet hole stickers on my car, as I have the real ones already. My car was used for target practice, long before I got it, the ones that are the trunk area, I have left for nostalgic reasons, they are not open to the elements..........Fred
  5. Hi all, today my mother went out in the cold and bought me a Gravity Feed HVLP Spray Gun that was on sale for $33.00 from $99.00, great lady to do this for me as we live outside the city a bit and she lives in the city. Any way I did a test with it tonight, I used some water based enamel and I thinned it down with water and shot about 4 ounces on to a piece of cardboard, I was using 25 lbs of pressure, man did this gun paint nice, and very little overspray, for a cheap gun I think it will do the trick for me. The cup is only 20 ounces, would use a larger cup if doing a bigger job. I hope this gun will be adequate to shoot primer onto my car. My compressor is a Craftsman 30 Gallon upright with a 2 hp motor8.5 cfm @ 40 and 6 cfm @ 90. The gun is to be operated at 15 to 50 psi with 7 to 9 cfm, so I should be in the tolerable range...................Fred
  6. Hi Don, check your email, the dizzy is on it's way.........Fred
  7. Hey you know, it's pretty darn cold here right now, it's -12 nad going down -20 or so. Our day time highs for the next 2 days is about 2 to 4 above, on friday it's supposed to go up to 25. But the roads and highways are dry, the driving conditions are great and we don't have that much snow on the ground, a general 18 inches, with drifts of course much higher. I prefer this to snowing.............Fred ps my vehicles stay real clean when its this cold the salt has no effect
  8. Hay that looks pretty darn good, what did you paint the cab with. Wouldn't mind havin that around where I live here in the sticks...........Fred
  9. I made a hook form some steel rod and used a couple of pieces of 2x2 lumber and levered it out, as mentioned it comes out easy when it starts moving. My dist tube was brass and in good shape, but was full of crud the last 6 to 8 inches.
  10. Hi Don, here are 2 pics of the dist I removed from a 47 Chrysler today , brrrr my fingers are still thawing out as it is -20 today. Let me know what you think.................Fred
  11. Larry, where vehicles were driving, or there is no snow coverage or in wide open spaces there would or could be frost 3 to 4 feet deep. Touch wood I have not had a problem with the well, septic field or anything else for that matter. Building codes are strict here and take into consideration the environment. We do get colder than Wisconsin, but it's the same as Minn or ND. But once it's at 0 being 10 or 20 below isn't much different. Inside of the City Of Winnipeg pop 750000, there is enough heat from buildings and cars that it's always quite a bit warmer than where I live or the outskirts of the city. Our weather would be the same as Grand Forks or Fargo ND, even they are more severe at times. Last spring when the snow melted, and there was a lot and the winter was very mild, we had next to no frost in locations on my yard, as I was digging holes in different locations........Fred
  12. Hi Dennis, great joke, how's this the one pic is yesterday when it was about -2 f, and the temp pic is what it's like here this morning. The cold snap is not due to break until thursday or friday, that means we have had 3 weeks of sub zero weather, fridays high is predicted to be about 28 f. We really don't get spring here until about the 2nd week of April and no real summer weather till May. The odd time it will get 70 and 80s in April and May, but summer is really from June to Sept here, last frost is around May 15, and the first fall frost is around Sept 30.Interesting enough it was a mild winter until 3 weeks ago by our standards, they were drilling test holes where I work, the drillers said there was only 8 inches of frost under the snow in the ground, not bad considering how cold it gets here, were at least 400 miles south of where the permafrost stays in the ground year round, enough weather blather from me, all the best, I know if I was in Cal, I would have a lot more done on my car by now......................Fred
  13. Don, I have the 251 Chrysler engine here in my yard, that one is in my 47 chrys parts car. I will go have a look under the hood tomorrow, see if I can get her out easy, it's darn cold here these days. This one should be okay, but needs the usual, points rotor cap etc. Let you know tomorrow.........Fred ps any chance you might have a speedo cable for my Chrys to trade or a set of headlight rings
  14. Heres a pic of my car running outside the garage about 5 minutes ago, the outside air temp is -2 f. The car was in the garage, which is 32. The car ain't perty right now, but buy late spring I will have a ot of the body work done and in epoxy primer, I think............Fred hey southern guys my car is not on fire that's exhaust fog as it is very cold here today
  15. I may have a long block dizzy here Don, will let you know if you are interested, if I don't there is a yard with at least 2 of them near by, can check if you like..............Fred
  16. 47, when your ready, remove the riveted patches, cut out all the rust, with cut off wheel or angle grinder with zipcuts, and weak areas, where the floor runs along the a pillar and kickpanels, make sure it strong in this area under the the floor pan. If necessary weld and fab to strengthen the support areas, when that is done cut and weld in new 16 or 18 gauge sheet steel. You have a friend who is a welder, this will be no big deal for him, as Jon mentioned you could rivet as a last recourse, I would have done that on my car but it too far gone to trust only rivets, so I welded in new metal. The gas pedal pin area, fab a new metal patch and weld in, whichever way is best, seam seal everything, paint on POR15, Rust Bullet, or some other high quality rust paint, then spray on 100% rubberized undercoating if you wish. This repair once done will last you a long time, Southern Cal is fairly dry, no snow, no salt and being in Pomona your not right along the beach with all the salt air............later Fred
  17. Yah, I can relate. presently I am doing the body work, I may either shoot a coat of epoxy primer on it and drive it like that for a bit or I may paint it as soon as the body work is done. I still have some mechanical issues to deal with, as well as the interior and chrome, but all in time. As I write this it's 5 below here in my part of Canada, I have a heated garage but, when it's this cold it costs a fortune to keep the heaters running in order to work with bondo etc, so I will wait till it's a little warmer out. If I lived in your area, I would no doubt be further ahead than I am.........Fred
  18. Heres a pic of my floors when I had just finsihed the welding and painting, I have since sprayed 100 % rubberized undercoating over the area, It's not real professional, but its welded, strong and hopefulyy will last a few years...........FredPS all of the metal was rusted away along the kick panels, I welded in new tin in these areas, I also welded in a patch on the removeable floor pan.
  19. Those are typical spots to rust, the horse hair under the rubbermats or carpet held moisture on these areas, thus over time they rust. Clean these areas up, weld or rivet in new metal where necessary, apply on body shop seam sealer to seal the joints and to protect from more moisture getting through. Paint over areas with POR 15, you cpuld then spray on rubberized undercoating. this involves some grunt work, but it's not all that difficult, and if it doesn't look beautiful under the car who cares you the only one who knows what it looks like in those spots, just get it cleaned up, patched and sealed with POR 15 or undercoating.................Rockwood
  20. Normy yall aren't try to rub in the nice short sleeve shirt weather, would yah, to a northern boy like me. Man I can't get much done today, it's even really too cold to go warm up the shop, will have to wait for a warmer day. These pics were taken earlier today the thermometer is on the garage wall and one is of the front of the house. All the best..............Fred:D
  21. Lots of homes , if not most in Winnipeg are the capital region has about 800000 people have central gas forced air furnaces or forced air electric furnaces, like I have in my house. Homes are also well insulated with R20 walls,R40 attics and R12 to R20 basements walls, this is minimum building code regs in this region of Canada. It works well in summer when it's hot out, and yes it gets hot here, not as you guys down south get, but definately hot and muggy. A good sealed vapor barrier makes a big difference keeping out cold air and mositure, 6 to 10 mil poly, and sealing every joint with sealant and vapr barrier tape, as well a lot of homes have Tyvek on the outside of the house before it's stuccoed or sided, in my area most homes are stuccoed......................Fred ps my garage is well insulated and has 2 small 220 volt electric forced air heaters, each being 16000 btu
  22. Hi all, well I scored 62% and I answered this as honest as I could. I know we use different terms and dialects even in Canada, I live in the central part of Canada, just north of ND and Minn. The score indicates I am a Dixie lander, but you know it ain't no dixie land weather here, as it went down to -35 last night. I do remember relatives out here that lived in the country far away from the big city, they often had ways of saying things, that almost sounded southern, just the words themselves minus the southern drawl...Fred
  23. It's 708 in the morning here in frozen southern Manitoba, it's -34 here at my place, were supposed to get a couple more nights like this. The furnace is running almost non-stop, this is unbelievable weather even for us-25 can be common but when the mercury dropps this low it becomes dangerous........Fred ps last night I was over in Selkirk, about 3 minutes from where we live, the whole town was steaming, because of all the exhaust and smoke from the cars and chimneys
  24. You know what guys, it was -32 or -36 c here this morning, now that's getting to cool for me even. My garage was about 30, because one of my heaters was on low. When I pulled in my daily driver last night, it was leaking antifreeze, from the waterpump, so it will have to be changed.I was lucky it didn't happen on the highway on the way home, as I didn't even have the cell phone along. Right now it's about 6 below, supposed to be down to -30 or so overnight, trust me this isn't pleasant, and it's darn hard on vehicles when you drive em in this weather, and boy do they suck gas when it's this cold..............Rockwood of the north:eek:
  25. Norm from Milwaukee, see the heater in the one pic behind my son, it's on my steel bench. I have 2 in the garage, each one is capable of 16000 btu, even in this weather, I could run both and get the temp to 65 or even 70, but the electric consumption when both are going is unbelievable. My garage is insulated well with R20 walls, R32 ceiling 8 mil poly vapor barrier and sealed all the way around and every joint, the garage overheads are also insulated to R12, this makes a big difference. I also had my car running today, took it out of the garage so I could sweep the floors, I also did an hour or so of work outside today, but heck I am Canadian
