  1. Did some shopwwork with my assistant tonight, it's 5 above outside but was about 48 in the shop warm enough to do a little work, listen to some Alan Jackson and take a few pics with my boy, one of him giving the engine a look over , and me and him sitting in the front set dreamin of cruisin on old Route 66..............Rockwood of the north:)
  2. There held on Labor Day weekend, if they have this year it will be the 4th annual event..............Fred
  3. Hey Norm, nice pics, I love the primer look of some. That is my current plan to finish up the body work on my 48 Chrys coupe and give it 2 coats of epoxy black or grey primer, might even get tinted stuff with light blue. Hey I had cabin fever today, went outside in -2 f weather and removed a trunk from my 47 Chrys parts car, then took it in the shop to get all the hard ware off it. Next it will go to be sand blasted and primered, it has very little rust on the lower lip, where it's the usual spot to rust right out. Man what I could accomplish if we had California weather here in winter, even Texas or Oklahoma type weather, if it's 45 to 55 outside I could work on an old car all day long. Tonight I am doing an oil change on my van in my garage wher I have it at 45 degrees, it will be -5 to -10 here tonight........The Frozen Rock of the north ps are you going to the Ventura County Primer Nationals
  4. Things like that make great shelf ornaments in a garage, here is one such shelf in my garage, the esso antifreeze can was in the trunk of a 47 Chrys parts car I bought, it was all dented, I rounded it back out again and put it on my shelf.
  5. The town is The Pas Manitoba, the Lake is anyones guess, Manitoba is the land of 100000 lakes, so take your pick. We used to have this on our License plates back in the early 70s, my dad would joke the government counted all the ditches and swamps in the 100000lakes..........Fred
  6. Right on Robert, things don't get any finer that that, we had to settle on taking the kids to a large indoor pool in Winnipeg today. The weather was quite snowy, not like southern Alberta............Fred
  7. Its like that here in Manitoba in June July and August, very hot, and humid for at least 6 to 8 weeks of that time frame. Last year I planted the corn too late, and because I didn't water it enough, it was too darn hot and no rain, the plants shrunk we had hardly any rain last July and August. The local farmers were very concerned that the crops wouldn't do well, they did okay in most locales. Right where I live the soil is black as coal, I live in the fertile Red River Valley, some is clay and gumbo, but in my yard it's black loam. Here in Manitoba you really do need A/C in your house or car or you will suffer, if you don't have AC in the house you are guaranteed 6 weeks of lost sleep usally, I know you guys down south probably get 6 months of this kind of weather. Manitoba summer is sometimes affected by moist humid Gulf of Mexico air, we get severe electrical storms, about 10 tornadoes a year, we are directly north of Okalahoma, Kansas, Nebraska. So we get similar weather, just no where near as extreme, in summer that is, we get the more extreme winter than those states, as we are obviously that much further north. Right now it's 5 above fahrenheit, looking for a low of -2, so not warm, but it's not always 30 and 40 below here., here is a pic of the south-east part of our 2.5 acre yard facing the garden , this is last year at the end of May, not exactly tropical, but very much like the mid-western USA. The trees and shrubs are young 12 to 15 years old, prior to that our lot was open..............Fred
  8. Larry, the west coast of Canada in the cities of Vancvouver and Victoria, one is 2 million and the other about 3/4 of a million, have identical weather to Seattle, not too cold in winter about USDA zone 8. The Okanagan Valley produces not only grapes but, apples, peaches, pears, apricots, plums and many other fruit. These are not just people growing for there own use but major fruit producing commercially. Southern Ontario in the Niagra region also produce grapes, apples, peaches etc they are USDA zone 6b or 7. Although these regions have winter and snow it's very mild, they have long warm growing seasons in spite of there latitude and winter season. Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and even Alberta, have very cold winters right through there provinces extending to the US borders. Alberta is the mildest of the 3 being close to the Rocky Mountains and the Pacific Ocean, they get winter Chinooks. Even Manitoba can grow Apples and Plums, we also have world class gardens, corn, tomatoes, cantloupes, potatoes you name it, we especially grow very nice strawberries. Our growing season here is short, our last frost of the season is around May1 to May 15, and our earliest frost is around Sept25 to Oct 1. We are a major Wheat, Canola , Barley and Corn producing province also. Here is a pic of Manitoba's desert region near Carberry in Sprucewoods provincial park, they have cactus, snakes and some lizards. So Canada is not a total Arctic wasteland, but parts are very mild and hot in summer, but a majority is cold country thats for sure............Fred
  9. Here In Manitoba, we get the tail end of the Chinooks (warm pacific air) and there effect weakens as it crosses the prairies eastward. Manitoba summers are hotter and far more humid than Alberta summers but we have harder colder winters here. In Manitoba A/C in Buildings and houses are a must, nights don't cool off that much and the air is sticky and hot, very similar to Nebraska summers, lot of thunder storms and tornadoes occasionally but we have a Large Lake here and it has an effect on humidity like the great lake regions. We also have less snow than years ago, but we still get too much for my liking, right now its about 22 degrees outside, mild for January..........Fred PS we have world class Channel Cat fishing right in my back yard practically, the Red River is a 1.5 miles away and loaded with Channel Cats lots of 30 plus pounders and I have caught one myself once, Carp, Silver Bass and world class Walleyes 10 to 15 pounders have caught a 10 pounder myself and it's on my wall in the Fall and winter and the odd Sturgeon
  10. Was a beautiful sunny day here in Southern Manitoba, it went up to about 28, was sunny and quite nice, its about 29 right now and the sun is going down, looks like a red sky going down. Had the old Chrys out on the driveway today, let her run about 1/2 hour, then I heated up the garage to 55, and went to welding in rockers on the drivers side, will do some more tonight...............Fred
  11. Here in Manitoba, people have been pining since the Winnipeg Jets (NHL) went to Phoenix to become the Coyotes, we have a really beautiful brand new Arena, the MTS Center, it's in the category of the arena in Grand Forks ND, and that one is beautiful. We now have the Manitoba Moose IHL hockey club, but it is not NHL quality. At least were getting a new Dome/field for our CFL football club, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, of the western division.
  12. Got a 1/2 inch of snow today, it's about 20 degrees outside and clearing up, actually it's a nice winter day here in Manitoba for January.............Fred
  13. Nothin like headin North to Dakota this time of year, hope the weather is nice for his trip, I am just next door in Manitoba, it's about 18 above as I write this...........fred
  14. Okay, one thing with tractors and heavy equipment, if possible should be inside a heated building, most heavy equipment is stored in abuilding at about 45 to 55 or so. Here are some cold weather tricks used in remote areas, bush camps, arctic conditon construction sites etc. You can use a propane tiger torch and heat under the oil pan and heat up the engine area. Some people will start a fire in a shallow metal pan or a metal tub and when the burning wood becomes ember like they place this under the oil pan or engine. You could also drape a large canvas tarp over the front of the tractor to block the cold air and wind to allow it to warm a little better. Another thing, up here in The Great White North, we have re-circulating block heaters, they go on the water hose, they heat and circulate at the same time, had on once on a 6 cyl, this thing would stay warm, I would have the engine heated up very quickly, if it wasn't too cold it would be almost instant heat. Another item is an electric battery blanket, keeps th battery warm and allows a lot more cranking power. these are things we do here in Canada to keep our vehicles and equipment running when it's cold............Fred
  15. What do yah mean 3 months of winter, up here in Manitoba, winter is from Nov the 1st to April the 1st 5 month worth, now if you look on a map of the USA and follow I 29 all the way to the end of it in North Dakota to Canada, this is Manitoba, land of the cold. Last night -20 here at my place 3 hours north of Grand Forks ND.
  16. Norm, can't imagine having to put the heat on in Glendora, been there a few times my self. Why not have a heater in the car, even if it's not that cold it's still nice to run the heater fan a bit to warm things up. I know what you mean by the firewall heat, I have the heater out of my 48 Chrys right now, in the fall I took it for a cruise and the heat from the firewall did heat up the interior quite a bit. Even if your air temp is near 32, after a few minutes your engine and carburation should be fine, it's when you start getting down to 10 and 0 that longer warm ups, cold air that can cause icing occurs.........Fred
  17. Larry know doubt when it's -30 or -40 it feels real cold. but believe it or not sometimes -5 or -10 with a wind is worse than a calm -30 morning, IMHO. When it gets below -30 I find breathing feels a litte different, but if your dressed for it, I never feel cold, its about -5 right now, sunny and no wind at all...........Fred
  18. Larry what happened with your Texas warm front, sounds like your in the middle of a arctic high pressure system forceing the jet stream further south. Last night it was down to 26 below at my place, Winnipeg City only 15 miles south of here was around-15, Gimli on Lake Winnipeg a small resort town about 30 miles north of my place went down to -40. Other parts of Canada have had very nice winter days, ie Windsor Ontario was 50 and so was Niagra Falls , this was a couple of days ago. Vancouver BC, has weather about the same as Seattle, as they are only 100 miles or so apart, but even this year it has been colder there, but nothing like it gets here............Fred
  19. Tim, my Dad was a one room school house teacher back in 1950, he had a local kid who was his janitor and was 15 in grade 6. This kid was bigger than my Dad and was always misbehavin, well one day my dad gave him a whoopin with the strap, the next day the strap was missing and presumed burned, you see this kid was the janitor, my Dad gave up school teaching after that year and went to work in the lumber business and remained in the lumber business until 2005 a career that spanned some 54 years.....The Rock
  20. Hi Shawn and welcome to the group. Great looking car. I have a 48 Royal Club Coupe. If for some reason, you don't want to buy the car, "not likely", I know a gent in Australia that has been looking for one of these for quite a while. Like as if he is the only one right. Enjoy the car, they are a good looking machine and it will be a pleasure for you to ressurect it again........Fred
  21. Its -33 right now and is -50 with the windchill, went out to check my dog, she has an insulated dog house with a 250 watt infared brooder light in there she was warm to the touch and her paws were warm. It doesn't feel that cold too be honest. The garage was 25 above inside with one heater turned on it' lowest setting, it barely comes on like that but keeps the garage from getting too cold..........Fred ps it's -17 in Grand Forks ND, which is only 135 miles south of here what a difference a few miles can make
  22. Tim, I also am in a farming district, tonight I went behind the house to fix a temperature sending unit, and I saw a little mouse scurring across the snow, it was -18 at the time, the little crittur must be living in some straw bales I have on top of my septic tank area.......Fred
  23. That's exactly how my parents were raised, no plumbing inside, no electricity until 1950. When my sister was born in 1955, my parents were very young, they didn't own a washer and dryer yet, my mom washed diapers in the bathtub. But you know they had a car a 1950 Pontiac, my Dad still says it was a good reliable car in it's day. Right now here at my place 18 miles north of Winnipeg it's -20 with the windchill it's -45, in Winnipeg it's -15 with a -40 windchill. NOW THAT IS DURN COLD WEATHER I TELL YOU,BUT MY GARAGE IS 30 ABOVE INSIDE WITH ONE OF MY HEATERS COMING ON ONCE IN A WHILE TO KEEP IT THAT WAY........................Frozen Rockwood
  24. Pat I was 5 years old and I still remember the infamous March the 4th 1966 Blizzard, nothing to date has come close with thye exception of November of 1986. I have pics somehwere of the March 1966 storm, the snow drifts in front of our house were huge and a lot of people couldn't even open there doors and had to jump out of window to get outside. Don't know how many people died as a result of that storm, were generally pretty blizzard wise here in Western Canada. Interesting thing, 9 months after the Nov 1986 blizzard there was a rise in births at the Winnipeg hospitals, I guess snowstorms do create a romantic environment of sorts............Fred
  25. USDA Plant hardiness zones we here in Manitoba have the following rating 3a and 3b, this translates to we can have temps down to -35 to -40. Calgary is zone 4, temps to -30 to -35, Fargo ND is also zone 4, Minneapolis is zone 4b down to -25, Texas is zone 7 to zone 8 and possibly zone 9 in spots. Southern California is zones 8 to 9b I think. Vancouver Canada is zone 8, it's our mildest region of our country..........Fred
