  1. Just wondering, does anyone know if it's safe to weld with reading glasses on underneath my helmetI have a cheap flip front welding helmet with either a #10 or 11 lense in it, when I was doing my welding today, I used my reading glasses, to help me see the work piece better. Now I feel my left eye is a little irritated, not real bad just slightly, but I don't want to do real eye damage. I plan on buying a decent auto-darkening mask after Christmas. Today I was welding in an exterior body patch, the weld came off very good, even though I was using .035 flux core wire and not mig wire and gas............Thanx Fred
  2. Rodney, I am using a Campbell Hausfeld Mig/Fluxcore combo welder, it's 110 v is 75 amp and has a 20% duty cycle. If I had to do this over I would have bought the Lincoln MigPak 10, it's a better unit. Or go and buy a Hobart or Miller unit. My CH was $299.00, the Lincolns are about $449.00 this is in Canada, will be cheaper in the States. When you buy a welder get yourself a decent auto-darkening helmet, learn to set your heat and wire speed and practice on scrap, it's not rocket science just takes practice, before you use any welder, read and know all of the safety concerns, keep a fire extinguisher near by and be mindful of combustables, practice safe work habits to avoid a disaster. Also keep all exposed skin covered, there are a lot of harmful UV rays that come off these welders, good luck.............Fred
  3. Hey Bob, what a cool old building, looks like the walls are all made from field stones, those fulton visors interest me, as mine was severely damaged when I got it. What happened to your snow, when we get snow this time of year, it never melts it stays till the end of March, but I can't get over how much your landscape there looks like here in Southern Manitoba.................Fred
  4. Here is a pic of my inner rockers and outer floor support changes, not quite as well done as yours, but there strong and rigid, so I guess that's the point. Nobody sees them underneath either, this is absolutley fine for a driver and not a show queen............The Rock
  5. Thats always a possibility, but funny thing my starter when I got my car was wired some kinda weird 12 v conversion,it's now back to 6 volt positive ground the starter, spins in the right direction regardless of the polarity. But not sure about a heater motor.............Fred
  6. Dennis Vegas and snow just don't add up somehow. I know it's not tropical in Las Vegas, but didn't think it often got below freezing let alone have snow accumulate on the ground, hey it looks like Winnipeg in October when they get there first snow of the year...........Fred
  7. Hi all, apparently my friend got this from the net, it's a dealership somewhere in the USA according to him, nice photo , has my kind of cars which is the mainthing...........Fred
  8. Lookin good Chet, keep up the good work, wish we had your weather up here in my part of Canada, at least it's sunny and about 34 today..........Fred
  9. I believe Mopar switched to all 12 volt in around 1955 to 1956 sometime, but if you have a 6 Volt positive ground, the polarity is opposite of a negative ground, the lights, wipers, heater motor, starter could care a less if the polarity is switched, but a radio does require the same polarity. In fact a 6 v starter should be fine if switched to 12 v negative, it will also spin faster. You would require voltage reducers for your heater motor, horn, wipers. Do you plan on using a 3 spd standard or a semi-auto trans with fluid drive, as that would also require some voltage reduction for it's electrical mechanisms. As also mentioned your amp gauge would have been reversed if changed from positive to negative ground other wise it would indicate discharge whan actually charging. Good luck...........Fred
  10. Here is a pic of behind the back seat, floor area and front floor area of my 48 Chrysler, had to also repair and replace rockers outer floor and some trunk panels,. I butt welded some of it, lap welded other spots, then used autobody seam sealer, primer and rubberized undercoating. The good news once this is done it's over with and a big task is complete and you have learned a lot, I also made my inner rockers with square tube steel and my outers are 16 gauge sheetmetal, a very simple design actually...............Fred
  11. Not sure where it's from, it really does look like this old Chrysler dealership, that used to be on Main Street in Winnipeg Manitoba, but I guess a lot of them did back then. I will find out from the mod on my other forum and post later...............Fred
  12. Hi all, here's a pic of a 1948 Chrysler Plymouth Dealership, not sure if this is a computer animated or if real where the dealership was located. The moderator on my Canadian 40s Chrysler website posted it so it may be from a Mopar dealership in Winnipeg Manitoba, but not so sure either. But it's a nice pic anyway...............Fred
  13. You see up here in Canada we rake our leaves in October, so you Texas guys are only 2 months behind
  14. Larry, there was a wicked southwind today, a llitle freeezing rain, but only up to 38 degrees. This is still acceptable, but when it's sloppy on the highways with freezing rain it is a miserable drive, just got home from work, had to slow down a few times to 40 mph, even saw and older Merc Marquis go in the ditch, appeared to be two young guys having a joy ride, no one was hurt...............Fred
  15. Congrats Bob, all the best to the mother and new baby girl, what a great Chritmas present for your family.................fred
  16. Nah don't think it's from her side as the In-laws, live even further north than I do. hehehe. By the way keep the weather stuff coming, it makes me smile, when the temps are colder down south than what they are here up in Canada. What else is their, Old Mopars, and talkin bout the weather, life is good......Fred
  17. The Old Mopar brotherhood is definately top drawer, I have got a lot of info, help, parts, good conversations on the phone, and endless help with my sometimes redundant questions. Just yesterday, my wife came home from the Post Office and I noticed a package under her arm. I asked what the parcel was, she said it was for me, one of our members sent me some parts for my 48 Chrys, I haven't even paid him yet, didn't even expect to get the part yet, now that's trust. Made me feel good to be part of this forum, all the best to GTK and everyone on this forum..................Fred
  18. Yah Knighthawk rub it in a bit, buddy, the great white north is exactly that, Christmas, snow, fire going in the fire place, a beautiful wife to help wrap the gifts, and a classic car in the heated garage, with a stocking hanging from it, oh yah the deer are walking through my yard and admiring the christmas lights. Here is one out the mouth of babes, my 4 year old was lookiing at a new calendar for the upcoming year, it was a picture of a beautiful new home, somehwere in California or Arizona possibly. He says to me, Dad is it summer there all winter, it sure looks nice. I told him in fact it is summer like all winter in many parts of the southern USA, he stopped me in mid-sentence and says to me, Dad can e sell the house and move there, I then told him it sometimes rains there and gets a little cool, his response was thats okay I can handle a little rain, but all this snow we have I can't handle..........the Rock ps when is the greenhouse effect going to kick in, I am waiting for all the warm weather as a result, just kidding
  19. Knighthawk, as you are a northern boy, you know it aint warm up here. But on the brightside,it's 36 degrees as we speak, it has been hovering around 30 to 36 for at least 5 days ,this includes overnight, this is very good weather for Manitoba, Southern Ontario can sometime reach highs of 65 this time of year, but if we hit 50 it would be exceptional. There has been a cloudy mist around our area for a majority of the time, the sun is poking through right now..................Fred
  20. Here in Western Canada, we generally go with a 50/50 ratio of ethylene glycol and water. This usually gives you protection to -35 to -40, I have had vehicles here for almost 30 years, and have not had one freeze up, and when we get a windchill with -35 the windchill can be -55 to -60, it does get that cold here some winters. Having said that I almost always use a block heater or park the car in my garage, even when it's -35 here my garage is above freezing......................Fred
  21. Merle, for ease of identifying and comparing temps I always use farentheit when posting on US based sites. We also had farenheit for many years,it wasn't until around late 1970s or the early 1980s that we swiched, I was educated with Imperial measure, ie miles inches, yards feet and pounds. It was in high school when Canada went for the big switch to metric, which in my mind was totally crazy. To this day in Canada, lumber, steel products and flooring and carpeting, still are measured in inches, feet, yards........Fred
  22. In Canada you face much stiffer sentences if you are a member of an Organized Crime group or if your offence involves a firearm. Our laws are based in English Common-Law, but amendants to the Criminal Code Of Canada, are being amended more to prosecute criminals with stiffer sentences.......Fred
  23. Hi all, what is this world of ours turning into. Shortly before 11:00 PM on Thursday night, 12 members of the Winnipeg Police Drug Task Force were executing a warrant in the South Central Neighbourhood of Fort Rouge. The officers were met with gun fire and 3 were shot, they all are recovering in hospital, one officer is in guarded condition as he suffered a gut shot. The bullet went under his vest somehow and he took a shot to the lower abdomen. The lowlife perpetrator was also shot and unfortutantely is going to live. He is a member of a puppet club, which is associated with a large well known criminal organization. Sorry if I am ranting but as I also work in the law enforcement, and these incidents hit home to all of us, that go to work trying to keep society safe..................Fred
  24. Here's a pic of my project I took 2 days ago in front of my shop..........Fred
  25. Not so great In Southern Manitoba at this moment, it's about 10 above and a cold south wind. Tomorrow and Saturday were looking at highs of 32 to 39, which is pretty good for us. In southern Alberta they get Chinooks, which is very warm pacific air that travels over the Rockies, by the time it gets this far East of the rockies it's fizzled out a lot, just like you guys in Kansas Oklahoma Missouri, you don't get the warm air like California, Arizona and the Pacific region. Yesterday was so Darn cold, I was putting up a few more Christmas Lights on my garage, and every time I took off my gloves my skin would be freezing in about 2 minutes, even though it was about 7 above there was a strong north wind. I did have my garage at a toasty 65 degrees, it is well insulated and I have to small electric furnaces in there, I would like to get one of those waste oil furnaces, they look very interesting.............Fred
