Even if you run a 160 t/stat, it will quickly warm up to 160 in your hot weather, then it will climb to it's level, if it runs at 185 on hot days great, even up to 195 won't kill it, but keep it below 200..............Fred

No kiddin Don LOL, I stumbled on this one myself when I had the brakelight sitch trouble a couple of months ago. It's amazing when we have these moments of clarity, this makes it easy for owners of our cars to check the stoplamp. BTW, don't you have brake lights in your taillights as well, cuz yours is a 12 volt negative system, does it still require some little circuitboardas mine does to allow the brakelight, the tail lights and the signal lights to function all togethert on the 2 rear lights, as well as the stop lamp, I have not done this with my car yet, but plan to buy the little circuit boards from a friend to make it work...........Fred

Not sure why this occured, it could have been a tiny void along the gasket,or at the shaft area on the ront of the waterpump, allowing some coolant to leak a bit. I would drive it, but keep an eye on it. The water pumps are super easy to remove and to re-install with new gaskets, don't forget to put sealant on the bolts, that hold on the pump, cuz they can sometimes leak. I have had t/stat heoungs do this, leak a bit then completely stop, so it is possible for the waterpump to do the same. If the pump itself starts leaking, time to pulll it and replace, they can leak too...........Fred

I posted this a while back, another member was having acute overheating with his old flattie. 180 T/stat will start to open at around 176 to 182, and should be fully open at 200 degrees. What temp are you running at? A good temp should be around 180 to 195 . A 160 T/stat begins to open at 156 to 162, and should be fully open at 180 degrees. Is this what you are running at? Even if you run a 160, and other problems are creating a higher engine temp, ie, clogged water jackets, plugged water distribution tube, or poor flow through the rad, defective water pump, late timing, and a heatriser stuck in the cold warm up position, can all exacerbate high engine temps and will elevate engine temps in warm summer weather. Around town, high temps or when idling in slow traffic, a fan problem may your cause, highway speed high engine temps can be a rad in poor condition, or a lower rad hose that is collapsing, and/or a waterpump impellor that is not pumping coolant. So give us some more details, then possibly we can assist you with the problem............Fred I also posted this message. Here is a number of items that require attention to have this engine run at a decent temp w/o overheating. -clean rad with good flow and the ability to dissipate heat, particularly important at highway speed, and when ambient temps outside are hot. -fan belt tight, fan in correct position for maximum flow, especially important in slow city traffic at speeds under 35 mph. -water dist tube, needs to be free and clean - water jackets pronounced clean, remove side freeze plugs, clean out, flush every hole you can. -correct waterpump in good shape and working -rad hoses in good shape, especially the bottom hose -160 to 180 t/stat, drill small hole in lip, to allow air to escape when filling system. -correct engine timing, correct point gap - heat riser, not stuck in cold warm-up position to allow hot exhaust to circulate to intake, rather than exhaust freely. - brakes not dragging. If all of these itmes are functioning in good order, you should be okay, if not something is amiss if you overheat and boil over. If your current outside ambient temps are over 85 daily, then you may run hotter under the hood, a good target is 170 to 190, even the odd time up to 195 or even 200 is not going to be critical, it's when you start climbing to 205 210, that the trouble begins. A 50/50 mix of antifreeze will raise the boiling point to 220, a pressurized rad will add 3 degrees for every 1 psi of pressure. -warmer climates, ie Arizona, California, 75% water 25% antifreeze would be fine You want to keep it under 200, it's best if it could be maintained at 185 degrees, your engine will run cleaner and more efficiently.............................Fred PS I hope this info is of some use to you............Fred

Robert it is highly likely that your speculation is correct, and we the consumer have to use this commodity, we have no reasonable choice at this point in time. However I never thought mortgage interest rates in Canada would be as low as they have been in the last 5 years either, after the interest rate heights of the early 1980s, up to what 16 to 18 % I also never thought our Loonie would be on par with the US Greenback, but it is. So I never give up hope that oil/gas will someday come down in price. The other day at work, some people were saying that in order for the price of oil/gas to come down, the American people would need to get very fedup/angry to make this happen. They were also saying how Canadians always except a lot of things, ie gas prices, when we should be protesting, another thing we took dry, was the GST tax, we canucks do seem to take a lot of crap without dishing it back to the government...............Fred

Merle I am hatin anyplace:D that has cheaper gas than in my locale, rigch here rigth now reg gas is $5.12 a US gallon, or $1.33 per the (not wanted measurement by most old school Canadians) per litre. Were does it end:eek: , heck it is costing a small fortumne this summer to cut grass, till the trees and gardens, weed whacking, snowblowing, ridng the 47, thenthe 2 vehicles to go to work, now does this sound like a " Country Tune" to you. Chorus: The gas is up, but I am down, whats a poorboy to do, when my horse is broke down can't buy gas, and the hay is all gone better stick out my thumb, till the gas comes down okay I won't give up my day job.............Fred

Randy, you don't have to cut the primer with mineral spirits, the primer can be rolled on straight out of the can, in 2 to 3 coats. The paint (topcoat) , needs to be thinned, in order to eliminate peel, and to self-level, and it allows for very thin coats, that can be wet sanded between every 2nd coat, to be finshed with a polising compound, and the buffing wheel. If I read this post wrong I apologize, but when it comes to primer, it really doesn't need to be thinned when rolling, as it will be sanded before a topcoat is painted over anyway. Good luck, things are looking real well, and yes Rusto does roll on quite nicely especially when you get experienced with thinnned paint..........Fred

That is what happens sometimes , a guy here in Winnipeg, where a lot of Hollywood productions are filmed, rents out his 48 Chrysler, they scratched the bumper in one movie. They paid to have his bumper re-chromed, at least they pay for the damage.............Fred

Thanx Anthony, your right about the sand, best left for the tight spots, it is sometimes a pain to clean up................Fred

Rodney, man this is another sweet looking ride you have there. Cool old Texaco box that bulb came in too. Rodney not trying to be nosy, but is the under side of the hood and the engine bay area painted satin black, mine is like that right now, was going to paint the under side of the hood in sation black also, regardless of my final paint color on the body. I lik the satin black look under hood and in the trunk area, maybe not period correct on mine, but I still like the look...........Fred

Bob, that engine could be just fine, for a rebuild candidate or maybe there isn't very many miles on her to begin with or possibly it was rebuilt, she may be a good engine especially if it sat inside for years, has a 6 blade fan too. Another example of a an old car owner, that won't sell the car, but in 10 years it may very well be sitting in the same spot untouched. Not being critical of this car owner, but so many well intentioned people never get a "Roundtuit", to get anything started, let alone a job completed. Lets face it, a lot of times, these cars require an astronomical amount of time, and cash to complete..............Fred

Randy, you might want to consisder the "Brightside Interlux Urethane Paint", this stuff you can roll on too. The diference is the gloss, durabilty, and the fact that you can get away with less wetsanding and amount of coats. Or lets put it this way, if the Rusto paint doesn't come off as well as expected, you can go over it with the Brightside paint, they are compatible. The Brightside is more money at $24.99 a quart, but is a tougher, glossier paint, and it is a urethane to boot. I am also looking forward to your progress. After the prep work is done, clean off the car real well with solvent, tack cloth it just before painting. If you are painting in the garage, clean it up, to keep dust and other foreign objects from getting into the paint. Thin your paint with Mineral spirits, acetone or xylene would make it flash way to fast for rolling, get the paint quite thin, maybe 20 to 30 % mineral spirits added. Roll on 2 coats, at this point the paint should look semi-transparent, then wetsand whole car with 600, have a pail of water, spray bottle and keep the paper wet, then lean, tack rag, and apply 2 more coats of paint, repeat wetsand with 1000 grit, clean and tack. Then apply hopefully your last 2 coats of paint, when dry, wet sand with 1500, clean. Get out the polisher, some polishing compound, sucha s the whiter Turtle wax stuff, and polish the whole car, this should really bring up a shine, and make the paint smooth like glass, this whole process could take a week, so don't be in a rush, take your time. Good Luck, I hope it comes off well, please post pics of your progress............Fred

Don, I am always looking for ways to make improvements on the job,( easier ideas:D ). Or maybe I just like to make conversation, to see what other folks have to say;) ......................Fred

Gala Apples are my favorite, we can't even grow them here, never mind Pear Trees, only 2 places in Canada you can grow Pears, Peaches, Apricots, Beautiful grapes and all types of Apples, that is in BC, and in the Niagra Region of Ontario. Them little Squirrel Varmits can be a niuisance here too, along with the Deer, and the rabbits. Last night while on rounds at the Prison, everywhere I walked that night there was a little Cotton tail lookin at me, some were only tiny babies yet, the convicts are feedin them.............Fred

For 5 years I have battled Barn Swallows from building nests on my house. When we first moved in there were 3 nests, the first few years there were plenty of Swallows trying to rebuild, but of course I would not let them build on my house, during there nest building phase I cannot leave my garage doors open they will be in there too. This year there were only 2 swallows trying to build, they tried for close to a month, they just gave up a few dyas ago, the first year there were at least 10 to 12 trying to rebuild, maybe next year they won't come back. I know they eat mosquitos and all,(but we have bats here for that) but I hate there dirty looking nests on the house, plus when the babies are young the Swallow parents get real aggressive. We have the following birds here this year, Humming Birds, Gold finches, Pileated Woodpeckers,(The ones that look like Woody Woodpecker), we have all the other wood peckers, Indigo Buntings, Orioles, Eastern Bluebirds, Robins, Bluejays, Bald and Golden Eagles,White Pelicans, Cranes,Geese, all kinds of Ducks,Wid trukeys, Hugarian Partridges, Ruffled and Sharptailed Grouse, Doves I saw a Turkey Vulture flying over me the other day when I was on the lawntractor, maybe that wasn't such a good sign. We have numerous bird species here every summer, but the Ruby Throated Hummers are still my favorite. I saw a bird that looked like a Cuckoo, but we don't have those here, just this Cuckoo Chrysler nut...........Fred

Hi all, I have officially commenced bodywork on my 47 Chrashler Coupe, for better or worse , we shall see. The first panel I am working on is the spare trunk lid, as it is in better shape than the one on the car, but still needs a lot of work:D . I have tried a little sandblasting on it, but with an elcheapo siphon feed sandblaster:rolleyes: , and my 30 gallon 2 hp Craftsman compressor, it becomes a little hard on the compressor as it will run non stop, in order to run the siphonfeed blaster. I have also used my palm sander with 80 grit paper , that works not bad, I have not tried a DA sander, as my compressor will no doubt have a hard time keeping up with it. The goal is to strip the panel of paint and surface rust, then weld in some small patches, on the inner bottom lip, then acid etch the pitted areas, to be followed up with Tremclad Primer, this will be allowed to cure, then the body filler can then be applied to perfect the panel. I have sanded on some test spots that I shot on the panel using 2 different colors of Tremclad paint, it sands off no problem, does not cake up on the sandpaper either. Just fishing for ideas on this job , my goal is to work panel by panel and shoot on the high build primer on each panel, till the whole car is completed. Thanx Fred

That car will look slick in black primer, or even satin black paint before you get the final paint job on her. A reminder of how short summer is here up north, then the snow flies for 5 months.Have fun in Detroit, are you going to Windsor Ontario also, too bad Niagra Falls is a bit of a drive from Detroit, that place is worth seeing, I lived a short time north east of Toronto in Kingston, Ontario, great place to visit also.........fred

It,s been a while since I last saw a pic of your car, did you get her primered yet, post some pics if you did............Fred
-
You are right Norm, my fussy pride does not want me to drive any car with bondo filler freshly applied to it, but heck as you say, I would work 1 panel, then prime. I figure I may as well try some bodywork soon, it will be getting muggy hot here now, but nothing like my Southern Brothers have been getting for a while now..........Fred

Now that looks like my kinda place, wish we will had an old time shop like that here.................Fred
