PatS.... Posted June 15, 2008 Report Posted June 15, 2008 What is the best way to loosen and remove the Phillips head door Hinge bolts? I have 4 to remove from the DeSoto parts car and can't seem to budge them. I seem to recall a tool that fit the head and was struck by a BFH to loosen the bolt but can't recall what it was called or even if that would be the way to remove the bolts. I don't want to have to drill 32 of the beggars!! Thanks Pat Quote
Andydodge Posted June 15, 2008 Report Posted June 15, 2008 They are called an Impact Screw Driver, usually come with a pair of phillips and straight blade screw tips in large and small sizes that fit into a 1/2" drive socket head, you put the tip in the socket head, turn the driver to put some tension against the slot and hit the driver with a BFH........lol............hopefully it will work, I'd put a heap of WD40 or oil on the inside of the thread........good luck.......andyd Quote
rockerbillykat Posted June 15, 2008 Report Posted June 15, 2008 I have been trying to remove my door hinges as well, with an impact screw driver, but too no availe! One of our reps that comes around has ordered me a product called "Rustoff" its by a company called WURTH.It is in a pressure pack can like WD-40 and Ive been told this stuff will penetrate the rust.It works its way in and helps dissolve the rust and grime that builds up around the threads of bolts and screws etc.Maybe you could find a product that is similar or same! I"ll let you know how well it works......or not.I should have it this week if the rep doesnt forget.......again! Quote
PatS.... Posted June 15, 2008 Author Report Posted June 15, 2008 Thanks. Don, that K-D one is available up here for about $45...the cheap Chinese version is $15. I'll buy a K-D today, thanks. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted June 15, 2008 Report Posted June 15, 2008 Pat..in addition to use of the impact driver (a must to have) I would advise that the screws be heated to cherry red and allowed to cool prior to any attemps to remove..I have found this to be a necessity and cuts time down to nothing...also do not overlook the 4th screw buried deep within the pocket of the door jamb. PatS.... Posted June 15, 2008 Author Report Posted June 15, 2008 Thanks, Tim. Until you mentioned it I had totally forgotten about that one from the last time I took a hinge off. In 1974. Yikes. Seems like last week. Quote
oldmopar Posted June 15, 2008 Report Posted June 15, 2008 I use a screw remover that goes in a air hammer that works well. Of course nothing is perfect and sometime you still have to dr[ll one out see link below http://buy1.snapon.com/catalog/item.asp?P65=&tool=power&item_ID=7391&group_ID=863&store=snapon-store&dir=catalog Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted June 15, 2008 Report Posted June 15, 2008 I have removed many many doors and after using the heat method I have never had to drill one..not to say one day I may..that would probably depend on the work done by a PO however. Quote

I've had the best luck with Kroil products, made by http://www.kanolabs.com/ I used AeroKroil on my bumper bolts, which were frozen solid and immovable. Sprayed them twice over a couple of day period, then successfully removed all of them. Marty Quote
knighthawk Posted June 15, 2008 Report Posted June 15, 2008 Here's a old blacksmith trick.... after heating it up, quench it good with water, the boiling or bubbleing action WILL boil out the rust. Course water in you door hinge area may not be a good idea, but it will work. Quote
mchev150 Posted June 15, 2008 Report Posted June 15, 2008 my wayfarer doors have a 5th screw in the hinge pocket, not sure if your desoto is the same. Quote

It works great, better than anything I have used yet. I buy a six pack about twice a year. Don't much care for the smell, though Like Buckleys..smells awful but it works!! Quote
