I took my water pump into my part supplier the other day and he said he didn't think he could get a new one but to leave it with him and he would see what he could do..well this morning he called and said he found a new one but when I went to pick it up it wasn't quite the same but still might work I will post pics tomorrow.

He also said that he sent the old pump to Fenco to have it rebuilt and they sent it back saying that it was not rebuidable because they no longer have a source for bushings. Has anyone else encountered this? has anyone made there own bushing? I am sure it would not be that hard.

Well I was hoping that even though this pump is slightly diffrent that I would still be able to use it but I am starting to have my doubts...aside from this new internal/external bypass revilation I will be able to tell if it will physicaly fit tomorrow.

Water pumps are the same for long and short blocks. Only difference in the pump is the backing plate for internal/external by-pass. It should bolt on.

If you get another pump, be sure to watch the internal/external bypass function, that is, if it applies to those big Chrysler engines. The 230 short block switched to internal bypass sometime in the 1950 production year.

I have opened the can of worms, I will let someone else explain. (Apparently OK to have both bypasses. Trouble if you have none)

Let's dig around in those worms for bit...

My '46 (with a P23 engine) doesn't have a bypass. Is it supposed to?

What happens if you don't have a bypass?

Well here is a few pics of them side by side. I have used arrows to try to show the where they are different.

The first one shows a square port on the original and a round threaded port on the new one.

The second one kinda shows where there is an extra hole in the back plate that the original did not have I suspect this is the bypass that you have me so curious about.

The third shows an extra port and the 2 bosses that are 1/4 in taller than the original and the other boss is about 1.5 in taller

and the fourth shows the extra port (came with a plug to plug this port) and a boss that is approx 1.5 in taller than the original (came with a longer bolt)

I guess my only concern is the extra hole in pic # 2

I can explain the difference in pic #1. Thats to make it work with both the piece that bolts on for the external bypass and the tube that threads directly into the water pump on the internal bypass ones.

The extra hole in pic #2 would be blocked by your engine block if you don't have internal bypass. You gasket will seal it off. The other extra ports are for other optional positions for the heater hose connection. And as Ed explained, the upper port difference is so that it can be used with either internal or external bypass engines.

It appears to be a universal water pump that can be used with eithee bypass type. Bolt 'er up and go for it.

I do have the extra hole in the block but mine is set up as an external bypass...now all I got to do now is get it running again, having problems getting it started after the fuel pump change....don't expect it is much but will have to get back to it after the weekend......it's party time!!!!!
