Kustom52Mopar Posted May 14, 2008 Report Posted May 14, 2008 Well I stopped by work last week to clean up my car a lil before going to my gal's graduation and I guy I work with told me my car was really loud. OK ya I've heard that alot. But he heard me leave the parking lot, drive down the road and get onto the highway, which is a mile away!!! Its not like its flat and nothing around there. Its a busy area with rolling hills and quite a few trees and businesses. It just blew me away he could hear that. So what do you all think, is it too loud?? Just the stock 218 with headers and 2" pipe with no mufflers coming out fish tail tips. Quote
greg g Posted May 14, 2008 Report Posted May 14, 2008 Around here there is a noise abatment statute in several towns and villages. Mostly it was put in for folks with loud sound systems. Now they are using it for cars and bikes. It varies but it is something like 90 DBL 50 feet from the source. Not many cops with sound meters but they do write tickets based on their understanding of the noise......... Quote
Kustom52Mopar Posted May 14, 2008 Author Report Posted May 14, 2008 Ya thats my main worry is getting a ticket, it's been like this since last September and couple thousand miles with no problems yet. My favorite part is driving by and seeing little kids cover their ears as the parents (yuppies) stare in confusion or disgust. Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted May 14, 2008 Report Posted May 14, 2008 While I'm not one who worries about what others think, running with no mufflers would even bother me. I have a single exhaust with a Smithy on my P15 and have decided it's even too loud. When it goes out, I'll go back to a nice quiet muffler. I would put some type of mufflers on there. If you want to run open pipes from time to time put some cutouts on it. What's you gal say when she rides in it? Quote
Jims50chrysler Posted May 14, 2008 Report Posted May 14, 2008 Perhaps he can't hear her:D :D Jim Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted May 14, 2008 Report Posted May 14, 2008 well IMHO if it is so sharp a noise that kids cover their ears..then by all means you are too loud...and should you get a ticket..then by your own admission that there are no mufflers..it is justified..the car should have mufflers... Quote
Kustom52Mopar Posted May 14, 2008 Author Report Posted May 14, 2008 Jim's on the right track, its really hard to hear each other at the moment. Since I had to put a big hole in the floor to put the diff trans in. But I'm one of the few lucky ones that found a gal that loves noisey old cars. She gets as much of a kick out of it as I do! Gotta love her. Quote
Normspeed Posted May 14, 2008 Report Posted May 14, 2008 If you get ticketed, if it's like CA, it's a fixit ticket, no points on your driving record. Of course, once you're pulled over, it gives the officer an opportunity to give the car a really good look-see and he or she might just keep writing. More fun than scaring pedestrians is setting off car alarms. Try cruising a covered parking structure some time. Haven't seen a Mopar six yet that can out-decibel all the straight pipe Harleys around this area. Quote
Kustom52Mopar Posted May 14, 2008 Author Report Posted May 14, 2008 You've got a good point there norm, there are alot of Harleys here too that you can hear coming a mile away as well. Guess I'll just have to take my chances against Johnny Law and see what happens. But I may get lucky cause the exhause shop said they couldn't get the piping over the axle from it sitting so low. So I put flexpipe on each side and they look like a glasspack at first glance or if they don't know a whole lot about cars. As long as I keep the RPM's low its not too terribly bad and stay off the main streets I think I'll be fine. Quote
Jims50chrysler Posted May 14, 2008 Report Posted May 14, 2008 I used to own one of those straight pipe Harleys and it was very loud....I never got a second glance from the Gestapo but it seems that on bikes it is more acceptable. You are like a moving target I would guess you will be alright untill revenues are down or untill a few of the boys in blue discuss your car (they will) then they will be aiming for the target. We have the smog Police here now that will pull you over and make sure you have all your emisions crap in place, no catalic converter = $300.00 my son knows this first hand. Jim Quote
Dennis Hemingway Posted May 14, 2008 Report Posted May 14, 2008 I agree with Nornspeed when he said that your loud pipes give Police a reason to pull you over, then they can give you and your vehicle a looking over. The following is from the Missouri Revised Statutes Chapter 307 Vehicle Equipment Regulations Dennis:eek: Section 307.170 August 28, 2007 Other equipment of motor vehicles--violations, penalty. 307.170.2. The motors of all motor vehicles shall be fitted with properly attached mufflers of such capacity or construction as to quiet the maximum possible exhaust noise as completely as is done in modern gas engine passenger motor vehicles. Any cutout or opening in the exhaust pipe between the motor and the muffler on any motor vehicle shall be completely closed and disconnected from its operating lever, and shall be so arranged that it cannot automatically open, or be opened or operated while such vehicle is in motion. jd52cranbrook Posted May 14, 2008 Report Posted May 14, 2008 I agree muffler is needed. I ran headers into one smithy with one pipe out, sounded muffled. Then I changed to dual exhaust with smithy's. I can make it loud, or I can go through the gears quietly, or semi quietly anyway, with a nice cruising sound. I got stopped Easter Sunday by local police when I took off from a stop to heavy on the throttle, loud. He said he thought it was a little loud. I said I could drive it quieter, said that was a good idea. Then gave a positive comment on the car itself. Not sure how quiet you can make straight pipes sound. Quote
claybill Posted May 14, 2008 Report Posted May 14, 2008 be cool and be sensible...put a glasspak on it. i ran duals with cherry bombs and the RAP drove me crazy. give it up...mellow out. be cool. ! mellow is cooooool loud is ..something else. bill Quote
53dodgekustom Posted May 14, 2008 Report Posted May 14, 2008 Dude, your car is really loud. But,as long as your ok with it that's the only thing that matters. When I rode in it I thought that if it was my car that i would want it quieter (But not much). But it's your car. I usually don't worry about cops with my loud vehicles, my town is full of strait piped Chevy Z71's with no cats so yeah. I like being loud. Quote
Kustom52Mopar Posted May 14, 2008 Author Report Posted May 14, 2008 Thanks Tom and everyone elses input, I've pondered a muffler or at very least a baffle. But for now I just enjoy my car sounding like an old War Plane. But if and probablly when I quiet it I'm not sure what I'll do. Quote

He said he thought it was a little loud. I said I could drive it quieter, said that was a good idea. Then gave a positive comment on the car itself. Not sure how quiet you can make straight pipes sound. Here's a little "True" story that will give the "skinny" on cops pulling you over for loud pipes, or not pulling your over. Take it for what its worth. Back in the early 80's when my son got his first car and was only 16 years old. He was always into hooking up all kinds of lights to anything and everything. He also watched the TV program Kit. He loved those red lights in Kit so much he made up a set of LED lights to work just like Kit's with red lights in the grill that go back and forth as Kits did. I told him red lights were illegal. His response was. "Kit has them so they must be okay." He went on to say he stopped at Duncan Donuts one day and two cops sitting at the counter saw the lights when he parked the car in the lot, and they just pointed and smiled. Didn't say a word to him. I then told him, "great, those cops just didn't care, so you're lucky." He just got a cocky smile and said, "I told you so." To which I didn't say anymore. Well...........one day in the dead of winter when it was zero degrees outside a cop pulled him over for those lights in the grill. Gave him 7 days to get them out. Now...........that was no big thing and he could easily do it in less than 20 minutes. However, while the cop was writing that warning ticket, he also noticed the cracked windshield. Then got him for that too. So...........my son was outside in zero weather changing windshields. :D So........the skinny of that story is. You just haven't run into the right cop yet with those loud pipes. When you do, he'll get you for that and any other things he can find. Reference Dennis Hemingway's post. FYI, he's retired law enforcement so knows how its done. FOR 53dodgekustom: In one of your more recent post you used an undesirable four letter word that isn't fit for a family type forum, which this is. Please go back to that post and delete that word and rephrase the sentence using suitable language for young people and mixed company. You can do that by hitting the edit button, then make the change. This isn't the HAMB forum. Quote
Kustom52Mopar Posted May 15, 2008 Author Report Posted May 15, 2008 Norm I agree with you with all of that but a little confused with something. I don't know understand what four letter word your refering to?? I'm not being a smart mouth by any means, I just don't follow. Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted May 15, 2008 Report Posted May 15, 2008 Norm I agree with you with all of that but a little confused with something. I don't know understand what four letter word your refering to?? I'm not being a smart mouth by any means, I just don't follow. It's the thirteenth word in the first sentence of the post that is time stamped at 6:44 PM. Mind you I'm not a prude and would not say anything about it if we were talking in person instead of the forum. Quote
Jims50chrysler Posted May 15, 2008 Report Posted May 15, 2008 ....I am pretty sure the comments were directed towards a post made by 53dodgecustom Jim Quote
Kustom52Mopar Posted May 15, 2008 Author Report Posted May 15, 2008 Oooohhhh ok I see, ya that wasn't me that was someone else. Had me scratching my noggin, I keep it pretty clean here. Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted May 15, 2008 Report Posted May 15, 2008 Sorry Kustom52, Jim is correct. My comment about the language was directed to 53dodgekustom, not you. Quote
Kustom52Mopar Posted May 15, 2008 Author Report Posted May 15, 2008 Hey no prob Norm, but again you're right. I'm sure Johnny Law will catch up to me, just enjoying it for the time being. Real question is will I change it before they catch up.... man I'm a dork Quote

Real question is will I change it before they catch up....man I'm a dork One good thing. You probably don't drive your old car in the dead of winter, and if you did, it doesn't get as cold in St. Louis as it does in Wisconsin. So, you wouldn't get nailed in winter. Quote
Kustom52Mopar Posted May 15, 2008 Author Report Posted May 15, 2008 As long as there isn't any snow or salt on the road I drive it. I put a summit brand heater in it and boy howdy it'll run you out on low! Quote
Normspeed Posted May 15, 2008 Report Posted May 15, 2008 Sorry Norm, I believe you misunderstood the irony of 53dodgekustom's comment. It was a clever statement on the interplay between the codgers on this forum hinting at ways to elude the muffler law versus the renegade spirit of the HAMB as expressed in text. Other than that, yes, it was as out of place on this forum as a fart in church. Quote
