My right rear wheel cyl is leaking so I loosen the axle nut 1/2 turn and take a 10mi drive wating to hear the drum pop loose. I have broken the drums loose in this manner all my life and it always worked but not to night. I jacked the car up and started to install hub puller. As I tightened the puller with no presure the drum came right off. If I had only driven a few more miles. Does any one have a parts manual covering 50 Plymouth They would want to part with?

Bill how did you know it was leaking, was it obvious from the back of the drums/rims, or did your MC get low.

I have a seepage problem in one of mine, but it never leaks out of the boot as of yet, and the MC does not go down, but in the boot there is some seepage. I still plan to replace these rear wheel cyls real soon, I keep checking the back of the drums, and the MC level, makes a little paranoid......................Fred

Bill, I'd be more than happy to lend you mine for a while. I picked mine up off of e-bay in case you're lookin for one.

Let me know.

Fred, sometimes when installing a wheel cylinder there may be a little brake fluid slip past the rubber but once in place it does not leak. My right rear cylinder on my '53 Plymouth appeared to leak a tiny bit right after installation about 8 years ago. My master cylinder stays up and there is no sign of a leak now. I attribute it to "installation seepage" and don't worry about it now. I check my master cylinder twice a year as part of general maintenance. Could this be your problem? I also have my car in a heated garage and I believe this lengthen the life of a wheel cylinder as they have less opportunity to absorb moisture caused by condensation.

Fred, I had fluid showing on my tire. If your master cyl isn't going down I would ride and smile. Ron, Thanks but I just honed and replaced the cups. Time will tell. Are you going to Spencer next week end to the Studebaker show?

Fred, just check a little less frequently and I think you will be happy. As I say, I just check mine twice a year and feel comfortable with that. These old systems tend to give you some warning before any major trouble unless it's something like a blown brake hose. I also check my backing plates occasionally for any kind of moisture. Just common sense maintenance is all that's required. If your MC level is not going down you are not losing fluid.
