StreamlineDeco47 Posted April 5, 2008 Report Posted April 5, 2008 Hi everyone, Have a bit of a problem here. I'm rebuilding a P-15 six and wanted to know what some of you recommend for the valve tappets. Some have told me to machine them flat and use them that way. Others say I should just replace them (I'm using a performance cam)I need to preserve the radius it has. Im stuck here wondering what to do! Im sure some of you have come across this and im wondering what would be the best solution to take on this issue. Thanks in advance! =Adrian= Quote
knighthawk Posted April 5, 2008 Report Posted April 5, 2008 I'm not an expert on this, but it seems to me you should spend the money for machine work on just buying the matching tappets from the same company you got the cam from . Quote
TodFitch Posted April 5, 2008 Report Posted April 5, 2008 I believe that the working surface of the tappet where it runs against the cam is hardened. If that is true then grinding it flat might grind through the surface hardness into softer material that will wear quickly. From that point of view I would rather look for new tappets and/or unworn old tappets. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted April 6, 2008 Report Posted April 6, 2008 Todd is on in his reply, you would have to know what micron the finish is in originallly, they are also offset for rotation I think..and again they will be surface hardened on the face.. Buy a set be best I think.. Quote
Don Coatney Posted April 6, 2008 Report Posted April 6, 2008 Querstion is where does one buy new tappets? Quote
Suddensix Posted April 8, 2008 Report Posted April 8, 2008 Sure hope resurfacing them is OK. Earl Edgerton did mine and I installed them in my fresh engine on the week-end along with one of his reground cams. Back in the 50's and 60's we used to do them all the time in the machine shops I worked at. Don't remember any problems. Then again can't remember a hell of a lot of anything at times. Quote

thejackrabbit Posted December 31, 2008 Report Posted December 31, 2008 And all these years I thought the extra long valve stem rode directly on the cam. Just shows the things that can be learned by paying attention. As you can see, I know very little about the Dodge flat six. Quote
