Hi everyone,

Have a bit of a problem here. I'm rebuilding a P-15 six and wanted to know what some of you recommend for the valve tappets. Some have told me to machine them flat and use them that way. Others say I should just replace them (I'm using a performance cam)I need to preserve the radius it has. Im stuck here wondering what to do! Im sure some of you have come across this and im wondering what would be the best solution to take on this issue.

Thanks in advance!

I believe that the working surface of the tappet where it runs against the cam is hardened. If that is true then grinding it flat might grind through the surface hardness into softer material that will wear quickly. From that point of view I would rather look for new tappets and/or unworn old tappets.

Sure hope resurfacing them is OK. Earl Edgerton did mine and I installed them in my fresh engine on the week-end along with one of his reground cams. Back in the 50's and 60's we used to do them all the time in the machine shops I worked at. Don't remember any problems. Then again can't remember a hell of a lot of anything at times.
